I have a homebrew race that has some innate spellcasting abilities.
As the character levels up and gets stronger, they get access to more powerfull spells (at level 5 and 10). But right now they get all the possible spells as soon as they reach that level. I would like to change that into a single choice (one spell at level 1, one at level 5 and one at level 10); but can't figure out how to design that.
Anybody have an idea whether that is even possible?
It depends on if they have the same list from which the o pick every time, or if each of those levels presents their own list.
If they have one master list and get to pick from it e times, once each at 1st, 5th, and 10th, then HeathSmith’s suggestions of using options is likely your best bet.
However, if each level presents different choices and they cannot pick an earlier choice at a later level, there is an easier way. For example, if they get a list of three Cantrips at 1st level and get to choose one of them, and then at 5th level they get a list of three 1st-level spells and get to pick one, and then at 10th level they get to pick a 2nd-level spell from another list of three. In such a case, where you “ADD SPELL,” instead of listening each one with its own entry, instead put all of the Cantrips into the same entry, all of the 1st-levels as another, etc. Whenever they gain the right level they will see a dropdown in the character builder and when they click it they well have whichever spells you added as the options, but can only pick one of them.
there's a 'character level were option know' option. use that and break the spell options down into buckets
That does not work. This automatically grants the spell when they reach the level. I want them to choose 1 spell from multiple options. (this is exactly how I have it now and why I asked the question.)

This is probably the sollution I'm looking for . Thanks for the suggestion.
Your suggestion indeed works ... but not completely as expected. I changed an existing character that was already level 5, and indeed in the Race section I had to make a choice for the spell I got at level 5. But if you create a level 1 character, you also already have to make the choice for which spell to pick at level 5. It's workable, but if you have additional suggestions to improve it, I'm happy to learn!

Okay, which of the two methods did you use? It sounds like the options, right? How exactly did you set it up?

When you are adding a spell there is a dropdown box that determines which level the character gets the spell at.
It depends on if they have the same list from which the o pick every time, or if each of those levels presents their own list.
