"Finally! There is someone who knows the secret vault of Durgeddin!" Says Lucy in a smug look. " I will not reject any helping hands. As long as they are good ones. And all the symbol and signature things sound fun! We can talk about that once we finish cleaning this stinky hole." Lucy casts minor illusion and makes a false stone wall for the dwarf cleric. "Uses it as cover, Ingrida. It will give you advantage if the hogheads appear."
The elf bladesinger leaves the corridor and backs to the bridge room. She proudly accepts Garavant's offer. And dashes toward the other end of the bridge.
@Garavant: (OOC: Absolutely no harm in asking! Ingrida will be happy to cast a healing word or you can talk the team into a short rest if you like?)
Ingridathanks you for the temporary cover and takes her position guarding the door; she agrees to stay in position for a while before heading back.
With your equipment gathered - including any new items acquired from the orcs - you head east across the rope bridge (no need for a Dex save as you are out of combat and can take your time).
You look through the doors that Sila used to enter the chamber and see a long corridor disappearing into darkness. Those of you with dark vision can make out a chamber at the end of the corridor, strewn with bedding and boxes.
(Lucy uses her Arcane Recovery to recover her 2nd level spell slot)
Arcane Recovery PHB, pg. 115
Once per day when you finish a short rest, you can choose expended spell slots to recover - up to a combined level of 2, and none of the slots can be 6th level or higher.
Garavant sits for a bit, looking about at the strange cavern, eating a bit of rations and having some water. He somewhat skillfully tends to his cuts, hoping to recover from the damnable orcs' lucky blows that landed.
"Well, at any rate, there are no fewer of us after that little set-to, and several fewer of them,"he says to the group, hoisting his waterskin in a sort of toast as the recover.
During the short rest, Silaqui pulls out a small piece of wood a little larger than a chess piece and glances over to Bree studying her briefly, then takes out some small tools and sits cross legged working on the piece of wood with her carving tools. Glancing up at Bree periodically as she carves. The form gradually takes a shape as she tries to create a small miniature of her in the wood on a small circular platform, skirt whirling. Extremely satisfied with the result (rolled in spoiler), she takes out her Maker's Mark and adds her signature to it on the base and holds it out to Bree smiling, "For you."
She gathers up the last two javelins and looks at the others, "Anyone want these? I've already taken 4 earlier but will take these too if unwanted." And there's the Bows and arrows? If no-one expresses interest she will carry one of the Longbows as well as as many arrows as are left behind by the group.
@DM or anyone questioning how I can do this..
She is trying to make a detailed piece so aiming for the 15+ but here's my roll - 18 - ooo yay!
Per Xanathar's Guide to Everything -
Woodcarver’s Tools:
Woodcarver’s tools allow you to craft intricate objects from wood, such as wooden tokens or arrows.
Components. Woodcarver’s tools consist of a knife, a gouge, and a small saw.
Arcana, History. Your expertise lends you additional insight when you examine wooden objects, such as figurines or arrows.
Nature. Your knowledge of wooden objects gives you some added insight when you examine trees. Repair. As part of a short rest, you can repair a single damaged wooden object.
Craft Arrows. As part of a short rest, you can craft up to five arrows. As part of a long rest, you can craft up to twenty. You must have enough wood on hand to produce them.
"Yeah! I use the skirt to encode how to perform my spells. I heart some people would write that kind of stuff in books, but I like this a lot better. Thanks for noticing." Bree says when Silaqui remarks on the skirt being used in magic.
After the short rest when she receives the carving "Wow! That is amazing! I love it! I will give this to my family so I'm still a bit at home, maybe they will believe it is actually me. They would rather have me taking over the business, but to be honest I would rather see the world." And she carefully wraps it in a colourful cloth before putting it in her backpack. "Well I am good to go."
After taking your short break to recuperate and get acquainted it is time to move on. Making sure that you have everything, you head east down the long corridor and into the darkness (Bree, are you going to arrange some illumination or take guidance from the party?)
About 50ft down, the corridor opens up into a room. The walls and floor of this natural cave have been carefully smoothed. You can discern at least four routes leading off into darkness. Red coals glow from within the southeastern passageway, which Sila recognises as the chimney room through which she entered the mountain, and a crude wooden cage door closes off the southern exit. The floor is covered with sleeping furs, crates, sacks, and rubbish.
As you enter the room, two human females run to the cage door and shout for help “Oh praise Lathander you’re not orcs! You have to get us out of here, please!”
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Sila does remember seeing a cage earlier and expresses dismay at not noticing them. Perhaps they were sleeping, and she hadn’t stopped to inspect, hearing battle in the next room.
She quickly passes Bree one of her torches and tinder box should she wish to use them and rushes to the cage to see if she can figure how to open it. Watching about cautiously in case they are bait for a trap. perception12 and investigation14
Garavant moves up to the cages as well. As Sila checks the cages' locks, he looks to the two women. "Give us just a moment, ladies," he says with a polite bow of his head and a winning smile. "We'll have you out of there in no time."
He looks to their newfound companion. "Sila,"he says, "I do happen to have something with me that may be of service here." As the monk investigates one cage, Garavant checks the other for signs of traps. He then fishes his toolkit from his pack, ready to either remove any trap he finds or unlock the cage.
"Of course I'm not an orc! Do you think there is such a beautiful and elegant orc in this world!" Lucy puffs out her chest with an air of arrogance. But her eyes show some sympathy towards prisoners. "It seems the pig heads treated you poorly. We have rations. Have some if you're hungry"
Lucy gestures to her familiar scout in the east corridor. "Careful. You can't blend in the rocks like you do in the woods. And don't neglect your job by chasing bats!" Artemis spits a skull of a bat on the floor. The white owl hoots and tells her master that she has already finished her third lunch today.
Slowly and carefully, Artemis flies to the east corridor. If there is a corner, she won't turn in a hurry. The owl will land on the ground, peek into the corner to see what is awaiting in the darkness.
Sila sees no sign of a trap; the cage door has a lock that you find easily.
Garavant crouches in the darkness and gets to work trying to pick the lock. It’s a relatively straightforward, and before long he has the door swinging open.
The two prisoners cry with joy as they step out of the cage, clinging to each other: “Oh thank you, thank you!”
Taking the rations from Lucy, trying not to snatch but clearly ravenous, they set about gulping down the food in between sobs and coughs.
“Have you killed them all? Is it safe?”
@Lucy:
Artemis reports back via your link as she explores the eastern tunnel. She reports that after about 30-40ft it splits into a Y junction. Taking the southeastern branch she found a concealed door which was designed to blend in with the rock face and look like a dead end. The northern branch of the Y junction opens into a large room full of barrels, sacks and bundles; it is unoccupied.
"A lot of them. But not all of them. We have killed eight. Alard Pashar, the guy who sent us said that there are more than two dozen orcs larking around this pit. So one third down, two third to go!" Lucy is closing her eyes. One index finger on her forehead to help concentration on the mind link between her familiar. "…Humm. About 30 or 40ft away? There is a Y junction in the eastan tunnel. Southeastern branch leads to another secret door which looks like a rocky wall. And the northern branch…there is a large room full of barrels, sacks and bundles. It's unoccupied now. Good job Artemis. You can return now"
Silaqui smiles. "The chimney I came in through is just around the corner and the kitchen area was unoccupied when I came down it. I don't know how easily it will be to get back up but it might be a safe exit if needed and those barrels and sacks may contain more food or supplies?" She looks at the woman quickly trying to assess if they appear to be commoners or adventurers by their build and if they have any apparent injuries ( medicine8 )."Do you know how to fight?" She pulls the javelins from her pack and hands them each two. "You should have something to defend yourself with at least."
"The way we came should also be safe enough. Although there is a tricky rope bridge along the way." Bree says and gives directions if they should wish to follow that route. "Unfortunately I don't think we can escort you to safety now, we've poked the orcs and I think we should finish this before they increase their defenses. If you would like you can wait somewhere near, but maybe going away is a better idea for now."
Listening to Lucy's description Bree says: "Ooh, more secret passages! Those always lead to interesting places. I think we should take that route!"
Garavant smiles as the lock springs open and steps back so that the women can easily get out of the cages.
He listens to the scouting report from Lucy. "Artemis is certainly a great help," he says, still not entirely used to the idea that the bird can communicate directly with the elven woman through some form of mind magic.
Considering the recently freed prisoners' options, he says: "Let's check to see if the chimney Sila mentioned is a viable escape route for you two. If not, I'd suggest finding a place to hide here--or risking a passage over the rope bridge. When we're done with these orcs, we'll check in on you if you stay here."
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"While you two(Garavant & Sila) check the chimney. I let my familiar scout the northern tunnel." Lucy throws a treat,a dried little fish to the white owl. Artemis catches the treat and reluctantly takes another reconnaissance flight. "By the way, I favor Bree's plan. Secret door sounds interesting."
