( I assume that Julius would need a Sleight of Hand check to see what he has stolen from the guard. I will roll twice. If the DM approves my advantage I will take the biggest value. If not, I just use the first one.)
Sleight of Hand:19,12
( Sorry I forgot the quote. Also, is the floor of the lift room loose earth? )
That will be enough to get the key.
Everything is carved out of stone, so there isn't much in the way of loose dirt. The basket for the lift itself is made of some sort of heavy/durable material.

Julius returns to the Derro and gnome twins. The sorcerer shows them the key he stole from the guard and whispers. " … The trick wouldn't last long. Tell me while we have time, did you find something useful? "

“We’re in for it now.” Val says out loud. Hearing the sound of guards approaching; and realizing he is woefully unprepared for a fight at this time, Val attempts to hide out of sight.

Using the guards passive perception, two don't notice you as they come in, but there is one that does and he points to the foot that you have sticking out from the barrel you're hiding behind.
Did you have any prepared actions or did you just want to hide?
Val stands up from behind the barrel he was hiding behind, revealing himself to the guard. “All clean back there!” Val exclaims as he claps the dust off his hands and smiles confidently at the guards.
Role a persuasion check if you don't want to continue combat, or attack if you would rather do that. Right now you and Daphywise are the targets of the guards.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Umarook charges the original guard if he is still alive (if not, closest guard to her) and hits him with her manacled wrists - unarmed strike: attack 12 damage 2
Uses her bonus action to cast healing word - 5
And shouts out, "we could use some help in here!" she looks over at Derendil - how's he doing?
Seeing that Daphwyse is doing just fine against the guard, Val uses his action to continue his search for anything useful in the den: Investigation: 10
He uses his bonus action to shout at Daphwyse after seeing him burn the guard to a crisp, “Search that guard!”
For Daphwyse's next action, he will attempt to search the guard.

You will find a:
Chain shirt, shortsword, and a hand crossbow.
Elven or not
Not Elven, just normal.
ok, then Daphwyse offers it to his group
You can do so if you survive the combat. There are a few guards that have entered the room and currently have their eyes on Val.

The guard is down. And Derendil failed his CON save, so he is knocked out and poisoned.
Jimjar will take his turn to run over to Derendil and try to shake him awake. He will wake up on his next turn.

Eldrich blast the first one that enters. 8 to hit
6 dmg if it hits
8 is a miss.
Stool will communicate to you through the rapport spores that they found a crossbow bolt while searching the area. It's within your movemet to get to, but you wont' be able to reach a guard in your turn.

That's not enough to persuade them.
They will start to aim at you, but Daphywise's Eldritch blast signals to them that another humanoid is in the room.
They don't lose their actions, but one of them will aim at Daphywise. One does notice stool and will aim at them. And one will aim at you.

Does Julius or other prisoners know where the hole of the lift leads up to? And does Julius know the name of the guard?

Just FYI, I am going to be out of town until late Monday (Oct 25th). I'll have poor wifi so I may not respond regularly until I get back.
They/Them
I'll open the chest. If I'm in view of the other guards, I'll attempt to do it when they aren't looking, if that's possible
21 for sleight of hand or stealth (same modifier) whichever suits
If they're looking the whole time, I'll just open it quickly and grab whatever is in it.

Hey all, I will get to your posts tomorrow. My flight was delayed so I haven't been able to check in the forums. Hope everyone is well!
They/Them
Yes, that will allow you to open the chest.
You can try an persuade Ront or Sarith to aid you by distracting the guards. Or you can roll your deception check without aid.
Or you can go with your plan of opening the chest quickly. The guards will try to fire at you with their crossbows.
They/Them
You can do so if you survive the combat. There are a few guards that have entered the room and currently have their eyes on Val.
They/Them
Eldrich blast the first one that enters.
8 to hit
6 dmg if it hits
DM - can you respond to my post #167?

24 is a hit
Is anyone else in area 10 fighting? (Right now I’m unconscious)
