The guard leads on over bridges and up staircases. The Hunter Level is much less crowded, but the clatter of skirmishes and the ring of hammer striking anvil come from the dwarven stonework barracks. Small groups of soldiers run laps around the outer ring.
On the Lasher Level, the streets are nearly empty, but servants tend to gardens made of statues, painted gravel and thick blankets of moss. The guard leads across a bridge a final time to the ziggurat. He comes up to a guarded iron bar gate, beyond which a staircase leads up to the brilliant palace.
"New adventurers here to see the queen," he says. One of the guards starts flipping through a book.
Lophii continues to drink his to-go beverage during their impromptu tour of the goblin city. As he downs the rest of it he stoppers the bottle and puts it in his backpack. He continues along quietly behind the rest if the group.
After some advanced page-flipping, the guards finally find what they're looking for and unbar the gates. They shudder open, rumbling the stone beneath your feet.
The staircase to the palace is cut in narrow, steep steps that force even taller folk to slow down. Neeblenoc swims below you in a colorful, chaotic reef, circles in circles in circles.
Guards at the top open heavy red stone doors that fit flush into the white limestone walls. Once you're at the palace's ground floor, you see it's lit from below by a series of white crystal lights held aloft by 10 dwarven statues. At least their bodies look like dwarves — their heads have been knocked off and replaced by lumpy boulders with ears that might look like goblin heads, if you squint just right.
Inside the palace is a grand hall, completely empty save for a half-orc sitting behind a desk 80 feet away from you. On their desk is a placard reading "Wess." About 15 feet behind them are three doors.
"Welcome to the palace!" Wess says in friendly Common. "The Queen wants me to tell you that you must choose one of the three doors behind me and face its challenge. You may ask me any questions beforehand."
"What behind each door?" Darksniffer barks, straight to the point.

"A whole mess of challenges," Wess says with an apologetic grin. "The left is a fight, the middle is a trap, and the right is a puzzle. I feel like I should tell you that the door you came through is also an option. I keep telling the queen that she can't make the hallways into gauntlets, and that some people aren't really into that, but she's the queen.
"If you want to see the queen, you have to go through the challenges. But you can leave without seeing the queen and the Watch won't harass you anymore."
"The queen can grant a number of boons to adventurers, and the challenges have been seeded with prizes. If you make it through, she's probably going to offer you citizenship in exchange for accomplishing a certain task. Even if you don't like the idea of living in Neeblenoc, citizenship is useful. I've heard you just came through last night, so you may not know -- there are a number of gates in the city that lead to various locations, but for free use of them, you either need citizenship or a citizen sponsor. Otherwise, you may only leave the way you came."
"You all are a group? That's good. That kind of adventurer lasts longer. But the queen is … bored … most of the time, and a big part of her entertainment comes from 'granting audiences.' The Watch goes out and finds interesting people — excellent fighters, kids with crazy talents, people with interesting pets. And they bring them to see the queen, and the queen likes them to go through challenges."
Darksniffer steps forward to the "Trap" door (if known), "Get over with. Too much standing, need to move."

The door swings open as Og knocks, revealing a long, empty corridor with a door in the middle of the far wall. In the center of the floor is a pedestal holding a velvet bag.

"Trap? That would not have been my first choice, but it looks like the choice has already been made." Before stepping through the threshold Yurk takes carefully at the area immediately on the other side of the door. Traps, he thinks, would they be that obvious?
