The strange creature's tooth-filled petals seem to vibrate in anger as Val's sword cuts across its hide once again. It pays no attention to the warbling orb of magic Evy sends its way that slams against the wall beyond it.
It once again whirls about with mad intensity, trying to tear into Val. (Bite Attack: 21 Damage: 9 piercing damage; Claw Attack: 18 Damage: 8; Claw Attack: 16 Damage: 12 slashing damage)
Val happens to notice the wound he just gave the creature stop bleeding almost immediately.
Val appears to be slowing a bit and can't get out of the way of the creature's bite. The petals close upon his shoulder, and he yells, pulling away and leaving his shoulder a bloody mess (though the many wounds are fairly superficial thanks to his rage). Still reeling from the bite, the creature's first swing catches him on the side with its claws as he is trying to spin out of the way. Luckily, his rising sword arm bats away the demogorgon's second swing, which looked to have been going for his throat!

Val has a new theory. "It is not you, Evy. It is me! It is sucking my vitality with each hit it lands on me."
Val tries a regular attack next, hoping the creature won’t have as clear of a strike on its next go (no reckless attack). -> Action: Attack vs. Flowerhead: Attack: 22 Damage: 20

Faced with a confusing, intractable foe, Evy frowns. Fine. She incants darkly, her eyes go dusky, and she stares at the flowerhead.
Move: Still behind cover. Action: Cast Tasha's Mind Whip at the flowerhead. Int Save vs DC 14 or "the target takes 12 psychic damage, and it can’t take a reaction until the end of its next turn. Moreover, on its next turn, it must choose whether it gets a move, an action, or a bonus action; it gets only one of the three." On a Save, just take half the damage.
Wild Magic: A spell of first level or higher has been cast, a wild surge occurs on a 1: 14

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
Val's swing leaves another bleeding gash. The creature is looking like something an inexperienced butcher might carve. Evy feels her magic take hold in the creature's limited mind. It hesitates and shakes its head. Hope begins to bloom in Val's heart, but then the creature launches another swift attack at him. (Bite Attack: 13 Damage: 7 piercing damage; Claw Attack: 23 Damage: 18; Claw Attack: 25 Damage: 15 slashing damage)
As the deadly petaled head darts toward him again, the tiefling barbarian ducks underneath. But the two clawed hands come at him at the same time, raking across his shoulders and the sides of his neck. The new wounds are too much for him, and his vision goes dark. Evy watches as her cousin slumps to the ground at the demogorgon's feet.
9 slashing from the first and 13 slashing from the second
OOC: I'll just double-check this to be absolutely sure. The creature attacked with advantage in all three rolls. In case it was due to reckless attack, please note that Val did not attack recklessly in his most recent turn. I fear this is not the case but I gotta hold down to that hope!
OOC: Check#2: The bad guy rolls 4d8 on a critical hit even if it usually does 1d8 damage on a regular hit? Or was the critical part of the damage roll wrong?
(I wait to see about the advantage question... Evy will do dramatically different things if Val takes 33 (divided in half) less damage than if he goes down. I kind wish she had some sort of nova power... Tides of Chaos will have to be it...)

The creature should have been attacking at advantage every time it attacked Val. I forgot on the first attack. Each turn, the bite is 1d8 damage, and each of the claw attacks is 2d8 damage.
Evy lets out a growl, and steps out from cover (but does not advance). She gestures and pulls, and reality (such as it is here) warps, and an insubstantial mass of light and sound and color and spikiness gathers around her hands, which she throws at the flowerhead with a scream!
Action: Cast 2nd level Chaos Bolt at the flowerhead, invoking Tides of Chaos for Advantage. 26 to hit, for 31 ...

OOC > She’s pretty clutch, but now she’s gonna die. That thing just munched on a lot of Val’s hit points for sustenance. Maybe her stand-offish girlfriend with the sword will come save the day!

Not paying a lick of attention to Evy — clearly relishing the sight of Val's bloodied form at its feet — the demogorgon does not see the focused orb of magic flying at its head. It opens its be-toothed petals and the maw within as if ready to pounce when Evy's magic slams into what would be its face. Its neck snaps backward with a crunch. She watches as its knees give way, and it falls to the ground beside her cousin. But before she can move to check on Val, she hears a low noise like a gurgle-y growl from the demogorgon, and it sits up. Its clawed hands grasp the sides of its head and pop it back into the correct position, and then it "looks" in her direction.
This is the demogorgon's turn. Evy, how far away from it would you say you are?
The demogorgon gets to its feet and steps toward Evy. It moves as if trying to stay upright. It takes another step — this one more steady. As it moves, she can see it is physically recovering — healing from its wounds. It picks up its pace and ends up directly in front of her, ready to pounce.
It is 5 feet away from Evy; 25 feet from Val.

OOC: What a beautiful and thematic turn for Evy! Also, thanks for clarifying the rolls, @DDP.
Here's Val's DEATH save: 9
The [magicitem]ring of protection[/maigcitem] adds a +1 to all saving throws, so I assume it also applies to DEATH saves.
