I’m looking to run Out of the Abyss as an ongoing play-by-post adventure. If you’re not familiar with this adventure setting, the players begin as captives of Drow slavers in the Underdark. You start the campaign with no weapons, armor, or items. Imagine playing a barbarian without an ax, a rogue without thieves’ tools or a wizard without a spell book (or simply trying to haul around a bunch of stuff without a backpack). If you escape, you might be able to find some of the equipment you had when you were captured, but otherwise, you have to survive using your wits and scavenge or craft improvised items. Not only will you need weapons and armor, you’ll have to find food and clean water to survive in a harsh and unforgiving environment.
This game will involve parts of D&D that are often ignored. There will be constant survival challenges, foraging efforts, chases and pursuits mixed in with random encounters and events specific to locations you visit throughout the vast Underdark. Until you get equipped and supplied, we will (at least for the beginning of the adventure) keep up with things like food, water, torches, arrows and ammunition, spell components, etc. This may also be a campaign where tool proficiencies (other than thieves’ tools or a healer’s kit) might actually be used as well as improvised weapons and unarmed strikes. It’s going to be tough going, but creative, out-of-the-box solutions to problem solving and clever role play will be rewarded.
In addition to the unusual survival elements posed by the Underdark, Out of the Abyss has a strong and challenging story arc with terrifying villains to take on. Something is seriously wrong in the Underdark and could threaten the surface world. Monstrous entities and madness-inducing horrors await you (yes, you may have to deal with short and long-term madness as well). This game will involve a party of players plus a cast of unusual NPCs who may join you at times for a part of your journey. The campaign has certain critical events that occur over a timeline, but it also allows for a sandbox exploration of the Underdark.
I’m looking for 5-7 brave PCs who want to test their wits and abilities as a player.
Who should apply? Players who like the problem solving and role play aspects of D&D and who aren’t just looking to rush from combat to combat (although there will be a lot of combat). Players who enjoy writing and character creation and engaging in collaborative story telling with the DM and the other members of the party. Players who want to explore some of the elements of D&D that rarely show up in a game (like those I mentioned above). Players who can commit to post regularly or at least notify the group when you’re going to be unavailable for an extended time.
Who shouldn’t apply? This is not a good game for new players. You need to understand the rules and how to use all the racial and class traits your character has as well as know how to use ability scores, tool proficiencies, etc. This is not a good game for players who are strictly combat focused as there will be many, different types of challenges to face. This is also not a good game for players who don’t like creative writing or role play. You’ll be expected to do both.
Examples:
Not so great role play: “My character tries to distract the guard.”
Great role play: “In an attempt to distract the guard, Akira falls to the ground and begins twisting and jerking like she’s having a seizure. She’s growling like a feral beast and foaming at the mouth.”
This campaign potentially has a lot of content that could be triggering: violence, imprisonment, starvation, madness, murder, humanoid sacrifice, etc. Also, know that character death is a strong possibility and access to a spell like revivify is going to be very limited. In the event of character death, players in the game will have the option to create a new character and be introduced back into the party through an encounter somewhere along the way. There’s probably a lot in here to discourage you from joining this campaign. But if you’re still reading and this all appeals to you, please send me a message with the following:
Name you use as a player and preferred pronouns
Age
Native time zone as well as times you will be most likely to post (afternoons, evenings, etc.)
How soon you could start play
Your experience with 5 edition D&D
Your character concept (you don’t have to have it fully built yet) with a short backstory (maybe about what you might have been doing when you were captured by slavers)
Any questions you have!
Character Creation Guidelines
Starting out at level 1
Either use D&D beyond and send me a link to your sheet or provide a PDF copy.
You can use standard array or the point buy system for ability scores.
Lineages, classes, and character options from any official 5E book are fine, including custom lineage options through Tasha’s.
No unearthed arcana or homebrew.
You will be able to pick one free feat and also an additional tool proficiency. Since the PCs are going to be challenged and lacking in equipment, we’re going to be looking for the heroes who have extra skills and abilities to help them survive.
In making character choices, keep in mind you are going to be underground for much of this adventure. There will be at best dim light and a group of fugitives carrying around a bunch of torches are going to stand out.
You will start off with no gear, but you have the ability to find some or all of what you would have had as standard equipment in the first stages of the game. Your character sheet should have whatever you were carrying when you were captured, but it should not be equipped until you recover it (if you can).
Good aligned or neutral pcs are fine. No evil characters. Your characters should want to work together to get out of the Underdark and eventually help save it...
Name you use as a player and preferred pronouns: T (just the letter 'T' - he/him/his)
Age: 51
Native time zone as well as times you will be most likely to post (afternoons, evenings, etc.): Pacific time zone - may post anytime between 10am and midnight Pacific depending on my schedule. Expect to be able to post at least once daily, usually more.
How soon you could start play: Anytime
Your experience with 5 edition D&D: 2 years. Multiple in-person and zoom campaigns with friends, both as player and as a DM. Over 100 hours of fanatically watching videos of live play (mostly not CR) and content on channels like Treantmonk's Temple. Currently part of 2 PBP campaigns on these forums as a player.
Your character concept (you don’t have to have it fully built yet) with a short backstory (maybe about what you might have been doing when you were captured by slavers) Those cursed duergar! Tanis grew up in Icewind Dale, son of an elven fletcher father and human baker mother, accustomed to playing and hiding in the cold and dark woods. And always good with arrows and bows as trained by his father. The youngest of 3 children, as an adolescent, he ran away from home in Caer Dineval to Bryn Shander and enlisted as a scout under sheriff Markham Southwell. He was scouting for a detachment on the tail of duergar causing mischief on the surface, down into the tunnels below Sublight Fortress, when he committed the cardinal sin of getting out too far ahead of his party. He found himself blundering into the edge of a pitched battle between the same duergar and a detachment of drow elite warriors in a deep subterranean cavern. The dark elves had routed the gray dwarves and Tanis was just not quite good enough at hiding to escape the notice of the victors, who added him to their line of chained captives.
Character Name: Tanis Shaidaro
Race: Wood Half-Elf
Class: Ranger (using ALL optional features from Tasha's)
Name you use as a player and preferred pronouns: Cyreon, he/him/his
Age: 39
Native time zone as well as times you will be most likely to post (afternoons, evenings, etc.): Central European Time (CET), most likely able to post in the late evenings/nights and early mornings
How soon you could start play: Anytime
Your experience with 5 edition D&D: Played all available solo content on dmsguild. Quite likely this amounts to hundreds of hours of playtime. Yet no experience in party play in 5Ed (I did play with friends 3.5Ed many years ago).
Your character concept (you don’t have to have it fully built yet) with a short backstory (maybe about what you might have been doing when you were captured by slavers): Cy is a woodcrafter from a long line of family traditions. In his younger years he was impressed by a dwarf with a crossbow and its craftsmanship. His impression ran so deep that he left with the dwarves to learn the craft. Since then Cy lived with the dwarves. Cy is particularly skilled in scouting and assisted the dwarves occasionally when need arose. During the last scouting mission has he been captured. (Find a more detailed backstory in the char sheet or ask me for it by PM.)
Any questions you have!: Will Multiclassing be allowed (this was designed as rogue/fighter)?
Sorry, I'm beginning to enter a vacation period and while I will try to check-in at least daily, I cannot promise that I will always be able to do so. From September 1, I should be back to normal.
I am an old fart living in CA (PST) and self-employed so pretty much live on my computer and able to post most times of the day. This all depends on my clients due-dates and as always, they come first and well family of course.
I have a few years of 5E under me now, mainly in PbP or discord games but have been playing DnD since the Red Box. I have been wanting to try out a Barbarian - Path of the Wild Magic for a bit now.
Backstory:
Vrah was born into slavery of the drow and knows no other way of existing. Due to his size he has always been a formidable fighter and because of that he is has been tasked as a guard of the other slavers. Though never given any real trust or responsibility, he has just been tasked to make sure the slaves don;t get out of line. If they do, he has the whip marks on his back as evidence of what happens, when slaves get out of line. He has recently started to think he might have a chance of escaping if he is able to find the right people to work with or use to his advantage.
Native time zone as well as times you will be most likely to post (afternoons, evenings, etc.): European Central Time. Evenings mostly
How soon you could start play. As soon as we have the thread up
Your experience with 5 edition D&D: Being playing 5E since it came out of print.
Your character concept Frenevir was born on a high noble house. He soon grab the attention of the Bladesinger Academy. Nothing strange as his grandmother was a great bladesinger of renown, who defended the people of Myth Drannor in their escape when the city fell. All his life he has been told he could be as great as her grandmother, and that one day he will be one of the few bladesinger that protect the elven people. He has trained and study hard to achieve that goal. But as the years passed by, he grew impatient. his masters told him that he wasn't ready, but he didn't listen, and he was ready to prove them wrong. He overheard some officials talking about a border village who had suffered some recent attacks and sightings of some dreaded enemy. The drow. He grabbed his things and went to that village, hoping to stop the attacks by himself and prove that he was ready. Frenevir doesn't even entered the village, he went directly to the surrounding woods and tried to track the attackers. He doesn't even saw them coming. The only thing he noticed was a smart puncturing pain on his neck. He saw the dart and then nothing. The next thing he saw when he recovered the conscience is that he had been stripped of his weapons and equipment, tied up and was surrounded by drows. He has started to rethink his actions.
Native time zone: Eastern, I check in the mornings and in the evenings
How soon you could start play: Now
Your experience with 5 edition D&D: A good bit-I have played and DM'ed a few campaigns
Your character concept: Eladrin Monk, as part of his order, is roaming the countryside, providing aid to those in need. He came from a small mountain village, always attuned to nature, and to the physical attributes of mountain and forest living. At a yound age, he felt his calling to enter the monastery, to learn how to bring peace from chaos, and to face the darkness for there must be light
Your experience with 5 edition D&D: Been playing for about 3 years, mostly as a DM.
Your character concept: An Aasimar divine soul sorcerer drawn by dreams to investigate the trouble in the Underdark. She is naive and unfamiliar with the dangers of the region and was quickly captured.
Character Backstory: Shadriene was identified at an early age as having a divine soul empowered by the goddess Selune. She has spent her life until now growing up in a temple where she was constantly training and studying. She learned about religion and magic, studying Elvish texts for early theories. Recently, she began to dream of a cavern entrance and heard words and phrases that she eventually determined to be Abyssal. Shadriene had slowly gained the ability to understand the dark language without studying it. She was certain it was her destiny to stop whatever was happening down in that cavern. However, upon arriving at the cave system she was quickly captured by a Drow patrol. This must be part of Selune's task for her. She'll figure it out, she's sure of it.
Thanks for all the interest! I'll give the post a little while to see if we get some more interested players, then try to whittle it down to a workable party.
Looking at the spell descriptions, I don't think you can stack those cantrips (booming blade or green flame blade) onto shadow blade because they both have a material component and require you to cast them on a melee weapon that is worth at least 1 sp.
Native time zone: I'm a Eastern Standard person. Can generally post throughout early morning/mid afternoon into the evenings. Weekends I can't post as late, but can post a bit earlier as a tradeoff due to my job.
How soon you could start play: Anytime
Your experience with 5 edition D&D: Coming up on four years of playing the system.
Your character concept and short backstory: Zelleri is a half-orc Archfey warlock. She was born and raised in Neverwinter, her father a leatherworker and her mother a caravan driver. Much of her early years were spent in her father's shop, playing or watching him work in a back room. As she got older, occasionally she would help out if he was busy, but a lot of her time was spent with friends, roaming the streets and enjoying their time. As an adult, Zelleri's mother took her on one of her trips, needing the extra hand for help. One evening, after days on the road, the young half orc went to gather firewood, and came across an unusual looking creature. Following after it, she quickly became lost in the dark. A shadowy, elvish figure offered to assist her back, as long as she helped them. She agreed, not asking or knowing what she was to help with. In what seemed like a moment, she woke up close to camp, with a small talisman made of the fur of the strange creature. The next day on the road, the caravan was beset by bandits. To everyone's surprise, Zelleri started using magic to help fend off the bandits. The illusion created sound of a beast in one of the wagons scared off several of the bandits. The surprise became the talk of the caravan for most of the trip. She returned with her mother to Neverwinter, but decided to leave shortly after, trying to find out information on what creature she made a deal with, and occasionally helping people along the way. As she was at a small camp she set up one day, she swore she saw figures out of the corner of her eye before feeling a sting and falling unconscious.
Name you use as a player and preferred pronouns: Caff works or Kobold - She/They pronouns
Age - 20's
Native time zone as well as times you will be most likely to post (afternoons, evenings, etc.) - Mountain Time, afternoons and evenings during the week probably, whenever I can get on my phone at work
How soon you could start play - Whenever you want to start, my schedule should settle down in the new year
Your experience with 5 edition D&D - I am pretty new to it, having only recently started in the past few months. Played some PF2E before and a lot of Dread
Your character concept (you don’t have to have it fully built yet) with a short backstory (maybe about what you might have been doing when you were captured by slavers) - Dragonborn Artificer, Battlesmith I think but depends on what others are doing. Ciccel Kaliann grew up with their family in Neverwinter. Coming from a long line of innate magic users, it was a shock when Ciccel had no natural magic. That never held Ciccel back though. They studied what their family did and used technology to replicate those effects. Ciccel exceled in this art. They would often leave the city to test their inventions or to find new materials. One day when they were exploring in the mountains, they got lost. As darkness fell, Ciccel lit up their gear and curled up in a cave. During the night, a drow raiding party found the lone dragonborn and quickly took them below ground, a captive.
Any questions - Would Ciccel be able to make a gun or swap some starting gear out with a broken one? The image in my head of this character using a gun from range while their steel defender holds the frontline.
Looking at the spell descriptions, I don't think you can stack those cantrips (booming blade or green flame blade) onto shadow blade because they both have a material component and require you to cast them on a melee weapon that is worth at least 1 sp.
Indeed.
There is some debate about this and that's why I asked just to be sure. Some tables allow it, others don't No problem with me. Just to know in the future. Thanks for the answer! :)

Your experience with 5 edition D&D: I have been playing DnD in general for about 32 years. I started with 5e about 4 years ago...mostly as PbP. because in person games have become difficult to find for me.
Alignment: Lawful Neutral
Your character concept: The drow aren't entirely sure what Mordo is. Some kind of underdark orc-kin...or maybe an Earth Genasi since his skin is the color of dusty jade...maybe. What they do know is he is ferocious and dangerous to be too close to. He doesn't show much traditional intelligence, but does have the cunning of an animal that made him tricky to capture at first. The hope is there is enough intelligence and animal instinct there that he can be broken and tamed. So long as they can keep him contained and managed his bestial strength will be valuable as a slave.
Mechancial Concept: Custom Lineage Fighter with The Unarmed Fighting Style and Tavern Brawler Feat for the bonus action grapple on a successful hit and Improvised weapon proficiency (the d4 unarmed strike damage is actually worse than the d6/d8 I get from Unarmed fighting style.). For the free campaign feat I picked up grappler to get advantage on grapple checks. The campaign skill proficiency is Stealth and the Tool Proficiency is Mason's Tools because he likes making simple rock figures. (was going to go wood cutter, but not sure how much wood there is in the underdark).
Will either go BattleMaster or Rune Knight for the subclass when that rolls around. Battlemaster makes for some fun MMA moves overall, but Runeknight gives me the ability to get big...which increases the size of things I can grapple. Not sure which route I will go just yet...
I should have mentioned this in the first post (knew I was forgetting something) and I'm glad a couple of you asked about this. Do you have a preference between playing on discord vs. these forums? I'm open to either, but I'm leaning toward discord because that's primarily where I've done PBP, it's easier to get notifications of posts on a computer or phone, you can maintain separate channels for organization, etc.
Please let me know (on here or by PM) if playing on discord creates a problem for you. I apologize for not bringing this up originally.

(Tanis Shaidaro, Half-Elf Ranger, above)
Good with either discord or forum.
Tanis(Ranger1): Shiverquill's Tempest City | Xarian(Fighter2): NioNSwiper's Tyranny of Dragons
Dyson/Eleo(TwilightCleric4): Vos' Beyond the Veil | Soren(ShepherdDruid5): Bartjeebus' Ravenloft | Ophelia(WildMagicSorcerer4): Ashen_Age's Risen from the Sands
Joren(EchoKnightFighter6): NotDrizzt's Simple Request | Sabetha(MercyMonk3): Bedlymn's Murder Court | Seri(NatureCleric3/DivineSoulSorcerer1): Bartjeebus' Greyhawk
I would lean towards forum. Discord I have played one pbp on discord and found it much harder to keep up and that I posted shorter posts
