Petmailer did not find any keys around the room. The guard who had the keys was the one by the door. Vethna stole them from him and used them to open the gate. There were multiple keys on the ring. It's possible some of them might go to the manacles.
The two guards in the room begin backing toward the other exit and the bridge that leads southwest to where the rest of the drow are fighting the flying creatures. Those of you who can speak undercommon can hear some of their conversation.
"How did they get out??!!"
"I don't know, but I'm not taking that thing on (pointing to Derendil the quaggoth)."
"Mistress Ilvara will be furious if they escape."
"If we're rushing to aid her and to help defend the outpost, how can she get mad at us? We're not the ones who let them out."
They look at each other for a moment, then rush out the other exit and start across the other rope bridge. You hear a scream as one of the flying creatures swoops down and snatches one of the guards off the bridge and flies up with him in its grasp.
Buppido rushes into the guard tower and starts looking around "Weapons! I need weapons!!"
Those of you in the room don't see any weapons or armor on this level. There is a table and chairs and some playing cards on the table. There are a few strips of jerky left on the table where one of the guards was having a snack. There are some mundane items hanging in some netting on the wall - two waterskins, a small knapsack, a coil of rope, a bucket, a small wooden mallet, a pair of tongs, and some extra chain.
There is a ladder leaning against one wall near where the trapdoor is located in the ceiling. The trapdoor has a bolt that slides to hold it closed, but you don't see any sort of lock.
Up next in Initiative order is: Vrah, then the guard grappled by Vrah, Stool, Vethna, Topsy and Turvey, Guard1 ( below you in the webs), Derendil (quaggoth), Eldeth (dwarf), TOP OF THE ORDER Tanis, Jimjar, Shuushar, Petmailer, Kisiki, Sarith, Shoowaa, Phodoxia, Buppido.
Once we resolve Vrah and the guard he is grappling, you guys won't have any enemies in your immediate vicinity. We can drop initiative at that point and you can have a few moments in the guard tower before anyone else arrives. The quaggoths and the remaining guard that were down the stairs to the north have taken shelter in the cave down there watching out for the flying creatures.
[OOC: I'll retcon something that might simplify matters. Last round Eldeth helped Derendil in escaping his manacles, but he didn't really need it.]
Topsy and Turvey were trying to help each other out of the manacles and failing. When Jimjar called out about needing keys, Eldeth realized Vethna had left the ring of keys behind in the gate lock after she opened it. She grabbed them and has started unlocking her own manacles and collar, then Topsy and Turvey, Shuushar, Jimjar, etc. So those five will be free and Eldeth will bring the keys over to the tower to start helping everyone else get loose. Stool doesn't have any restraints. He is timidly hanging out with the gnomes that were still in the cell.
The only active conflict right now is between Vrah and the guard he has grappled. There's no hurry to resolve that. Vrah might need help depending on how that goes. Once that is concluded, we can get you guys into the upper floor of the guard tower where the armory is located, then see how you want to proceed from there.
[OOC: I am still manacled as I was not able to break my manacles, I probably should have rolled that grapple as a dis-advantage, will do so this round.]
Vrah lifts the guard up and over his head as he walks to the edge and then tosses the guard out over the edge as far as possible, hoping for the drow to not land in any webs.
[OOC: Okay, this is a tricky one. I'm open to discussion. You had the Drow grappled. In my mind, just because they are grappled that doesn't mean you can do anything you want to them (pick them up in the air and throw them for example). Having a contested check result in a tie usually means things stay as they are under the Player's Handbook. I'm leaning toward saying you try to throw him and he is able to keep you from doing so. But I'm open to discussion. I can say this for sure: the webs are very extensive in this area near the side of the cavern wall. You would have to throw him out 40 feet or more to get him past the edge of the webs where he would plummet down to the water below. I don't think that would happen on a 7. You would still have him grappled at worst or you try to throw him and you get him off the landing, but he is able to cling to the side of the cliff. What do you think is fair?]
(I don't believe any of the actions would affect what Vethna does next, so I am going to post it now.) Vethna climbs through the window, then up the wall to the trapdoor. She unlocks it and climbs through into the area above the guardroom.
Seeing the other guards flee, Derendil looks around for an enemy and spots the guard Vrah is wrestling with. He turns and starts back across the bridge toward you. Vrah, you see the guard's eyes go wide. Already being manhandled by a bugbear, he doesn't want to go toe-to-toe with a quaggoth as well. He lets you toss him over the edge and he lands in the webs about 15 feet below the cliff's edge.
Eldeth arrives with the keys and the other prisoners in tow. She begins unlocking everyone else's manacles and collars and you all feel relief from getting these things off your wrists and neck.
Vethna opens the trap door and climbs up to the second level.
The contents of the armory include the following. Unless specified otherwise, all the armor is elf-sized:
6 chain shirts
6 suits of studded leather armor
6 shields
6 hand crossbows
20 cases of hand crossbow bolts, each case containing 20 bolts
6 shortswords and 10 daggers
6 bags of caltrops (20 caltrops per bag)
4 100-foot-long coils of silk rope
2 building hammers (not usable as weapons)
2 bags of iron spikes (10 spikes per bag)
In addition to all of this, you find several piles of packs, weapons and supplies that were confiscated from you. I'll review your inventory sheets later today and let you know if anything you had on you is missing from your stuff (confiscated by Ilvara or stolen by a guard). In the meantime, you can start dividing this stuff up. Right now, all the guards are focused on the flying creatures and are not coming back toward the guard tower.
You're out of initiative for now. You don't have a ton of time, but you do have a few moments to discuss a plan of action. Do you grab what you can here and flee? If so, how do you plan leave? There is a lot of action going on down by the lift, which normally would be the safest way to get down to the cavern floor. I'll post the map again in the next post. The lift is at #5 on the map. You are at #10. If you went back toward your cell and up to 13, you can jump down without getting into the webs, but you aren't sure how deep the water is under that area. You could also take the other rope bridge toward the water fall and leap down from it. There are no webs around the waterfall. You know the pool below that area is fairly deep. The kitchen and pantry are in #3 if you wanted to get food supplies and rations, but that area between #s 2, 3 and 4 is in chaos, full of drow and flying creatures.
What Tanis would try to take from the armory (if agreeable to others) would depend on how much of his original equipment he finds, if any, since some of it is redundant.
Sorry, saw the private message just now. Tanis grabs from his equipment: - His explorer's pack (no rations, empty waterskin), including backpack - Longbow, quiver and arrows (equips it) - Rapier (equips it) - Studded leather (wears it) - Sprig of mistletoe
From the armory supplies, he would want to grab: - 1 Hand crossbow - 3 cases of crossbow bolts - 1 Dagger - 1 100' silk rope (if no one else takes them, he would grab the rest), but having 1 at the ready to tie off for a descent to the cavern floor. - 1 Shield - 1 Bag of caltrops (if no one else takes them, he would grab them the rest). - If no one else takes the hammers and spikes, he would grab what remains as well. (Tanis is very uneasy about Buppido arming himself, and to a lesser extent, Sarith, but nothing to be done about that now).
Are there any sacks or containers? Would be great to just take ALL of it, equip what we need right this moment, and sort the rest out later.
Glancing at the chaos of drow and strange fighting creatures to the southwest, Tanis would suggest: "Food and water would be great, but too risky and time-consuming now I think? We'll have to forage eventually. I say take as much as we can carry here from the armory, then tie off a silk rope to climb down to the water where there are no webs. Someone will need to carry Stool. Happy to hear better ideas, but we need to move quick."
@DM - are there still quaggoths (not Derendil) in the area to the NE?
Kisiki scampers up to the upper floor and digs through his pack. "Tsss... My kit is missing, but everything else is here." He throws his armor over his head - it's just some leather wrap and bands, adorned with teeth and bone fragments - and slaps a turtle shell onto his arm (a shield). He picks up a crude handaxe and mace, hanging them from loops in his armor. Then he grasps a mummified rat's head in his free hand and wraps the leather thong attached to it around his knuckles so it won't fall away.
Draconic:
"...So He created the sun, to give his children warmth and light..."
A flash of bright light erupts from the eye sockets and mouth of the rat head, filling the room with the warm glow of sunlight ((it doesn't count as sunlight for Drow)). Casts light
He looks at the gear scattered on the floor and his eyes go straight to the wrapped up silk rope. "We choose where to exit." He eyes his group appraisingly before pushing the bundled rope into Tanis's hands.
Elvish:
"Find us a way out" his accent in Elvish is similar to that of the northern groups of hermetic wood elves.
It's about 100 feet to the cavern floor from this tower. The distance is a little less from area 13. There are quaggoths (you don't know how many total) around area 12. There was also another guard down around 13 who someone spotted. He never came up the stairs. You don't know what he's doing.
Vrah grabs his equipment, growls at the annoyance that one of his battleaxe's is missing then turns to the group, "Best spot to jump into water would be back near our prison....Though I would like to go about killing the rest of the drow, now that we are armed, and there is a distraction."
At which point Vrah asks for help from one of his companions to help him finish getting out of the manacles.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Tanis is reconsidering. Time is of the essence and we do not want to waste time fighting the drow and quaggoths potentially near area 13 to the NW. We should stuff as much as we can in packs (ideally we get everything between all of us) and dash partway down the southern bridge to jump into the deep pool by the waterfall. Looks like the quickest way. Also, that way, no one has to climb and carry Stool at the same time. Just have to hope there are no more oozes down there.
To try to find out: how safe is it for us to look for an opening and dash half (2/3?) of the way down the southern bridge so we can jump down to the deep pool and stay clear of the webs. What is the risk level of getting picked off by one of the large flying monsters or attracting notice from the drow nearby if we do that?
Phodoxia, scrambling up the ladder after Vethna, spends just a couple of seconds staring greedily at the armor, weapons and supplies stacked up here, before digging around to find her own things. She finds most of them, but hisses in frustration when she finds something very important missing...
The flash of light from Kisiki's spell startles her from her frantic search. "Douse that light, they will see!" she yelps. Throwing her belongings into her backpack, she shoulders it and drops back down the ladder. She takes nothing additional with her.
Turning just enough of an ear to the discussion about what to do, she mumbles, "The waterfall, then," and ducks out the door into the swinging rope bridge that leads towards the waterfall. She moves as fast as she can while trying not to be seen, ready to climb underneath the bridge if she needs. If she makes it to the waterfall, she'll try and see if she can tell the safest way down.
Shoowaa is unbelievably happy when he sees his stick, he quickly goes for it, tail wagging rappidly. He grabs his other stuff as well. He’s a bit sad that his flute is not here, but figures it would be better to leave it behind than atay here longwr. He will also geab a hand crosbow with bolts to go with it. if he has time he’ll quickly put on his leather and equips his shield. He then quickly follows the group
Vrah: Eldeth will unlock anyone else who isn't free from the collars and manacles yet.
Tanis: You have darkvision for 60 ft. The exterior areas don't have light except for the occasional phosphorescent fungus, but the interior spaces do have a little bit. Looking out of the guard tower down the rope bridge toward the waterfall and the other towers, you can see that no one is currently on that bridge. You can only see over about as far as the short bridge to areas 6-8. You see some figures moving down there, but can't tell much about them at this distance in the dark. You hear droning and screeches as the creatures continue to fly around inside the cavern. You catch glimpses of dark shadows zooming around, but you aren't sure what they are doing. From the rope bridge, you could jump off towards the waterfall and avoid the webs. The drow you see on the other side are about as close to that jumping off point as you are.
Kisiki: When you come down from the armory level (there are no windows up there), I will need to know what you are doing with your light source.
Phodoxia: With your small size and stealth, you can get down the bridge close to the waterfall without being seen. From that point you can see a little farther. It looks like Shoor and some better equipped fighters are guarding the short bridge to the next tower over. In the distance beyond them, you see drow crouched down firing crossbows up into the air. Looking over the side, you think you could jump out from the bridge toward the waterfall and clear the webs. But it gives your stomach a queasy feeling to think about leaping off next to that rushing column of water. Between the spray from the waterfall and the darkness below, you can't see the bottom. Your fellow prisoners who worked down there told you the pool looked deep enough to safely jump into, but you know you're at least 100 feet from the water.
Shoowaa: You'll just have time to don some leather armor.
Anyone upstairs in the armory you see:
Buppido grabbing some derro-sized leather armor. He's found a pack that appears to be his. He's also grabbed a shield and has pulled a couple of daggers out of the pack and put them on his belt.
Derendil tries to put on one of the chain shirts which is way too small for him. He shrugs and casts it aside. He'll offer to carry Stool.
Eldeth finds her own leather armor, a shield and a war hammer, plus a small pack. She kisses the war hammer before slipping it into a belt.
Jimjar grabs a crossbow and a couple of cases of bolts and two sacks of caltrops.
Sarith puts on one of the chain shirts, grabs a shield, crossbow, short sword and cases of bolts.
Shuushar asks Jimjar to hand him down a simple bag that he slings over his shoulder and a fishing net that he sticks into the bag. Otherwise, he doesn't even look through the contents of the bag to see what is and is not there.
Topsy and Turvey find a couple of small nap sacks. Topsy grabs a hand crossbow and Turvey grabs a shortsword.
