I will move toward the town with caution, looking for lights and general town activity.
once at the edge of town i will howl a long and probing howl. Then i will wait with carp for a minute. If carp tries to get down i growl and shake my head to stop him.

once at the edge of town i will howl a long and probing howl. Then i will wait with carp for a minute. If carp tries to get down i growl and shake my head to stop him.
Did you approach the town moving up the road? As you near the town earlier you see a small watch tower with lights and one figure at the top.
The rest of town has lights here and there and there is smoke rising form quite a few chimneys.
I moved off the road when i smelt the carrion to gain more bearing on the situation, but moved back onto the road when i saw the watchtower was attended and that smoke was rising from the chimneys.
I howled from the road, sitting in the middle of the road, waiting for either townsfolk or enemies to appear.
Titus warns the other and moves off into the forest with practiced ease. Elf senses sweeping the trees and underbrush in the filtered moonlight he finds the spore quickly and follows the group. The Elf ranger discerns 7 sets of hobnail booted feet, Hobgoblins by the looks of them.
He is soon joined by Breccha, Kargan, and Eedim. Breccha experiencing some difficulties in the night dark forest.
The group of hobgoblins continues heading north east at speed. after a few moments you notice one of their number breaks off and heads off to the east...
Kryinor howls his warning near the town, no enemies show, but there is movement near the new gate as a few more armed villagers appear int he watch tower with bow next to the original man on watch. The smell of fur and carrion becomes more faint. It may be due to the wind dying down or its source moving off tot he north he is not certain.
Once it is apparent the town is safe, and those guarding the walls are human, knowing that my hour is very close to its end, i shift back into my elven form lowering carp to the ground. Ensuring that my body is always between carp and the watchmen, cautious of a stray arrow let loose by a nervous guardsmen.
Whispering to carp: "Stay close, do not stray from my side, it seems i my have given these poor fellows quite the fright for no apparent reason." Smiling at the young boy.
With hands raised above my head and moving closer to the tower "Hold, night watch, We are friends! .......Stay your arrows or you will face the wrath of one Quelline Aderleaf to be sure. Be at peace it is only I, Kryinor, traveling companion of Captain Titus.......... I am sorry if I alarmed you, there was a foul smell on the wind as i approached the town and i feared something was amiss within the walls......... I have traveled long and hard this night aided by my magic in an attempt to safely return the young pup of Quelline, Carp here strayed far from home hoping to help my friends and I destroy the goblins to the north, his cause was noble and his bravery fierce, thus Titus and I agreed that I would bring him home safely this night. Sildar Hallwinter knows me well if you doubt my words or my intent, i am no threat to you, i am exhausted and in need of rest, i pray my trust is repayed in kindness....
I will wait for the guards to reply before making any more movements, if at any point they fire arrows at us i will turn my back to protect carp.
"7 hobgoblins I believe gents. Six have continued in their direction of travel. One however has turned east. I am confident we can pick up the trail of the 6 again after we deal with this lone individual."
I then head off after the lone hobgoblin at full pace
" Maybe if anyone speaks Hobgoblin we should take the lone one alive to question; if not then let us dispatch him swiftly so we can catch and take down his fellows..."
Kryinor approaches the new town gate with Carp in tow, announcing himself to the gathering militia in the hope that the green troops don't panic and fire at them.
"Come forward neighbor into the light that we may identify you."An older voice calls from the tower.
At the same time you see the long gray mane of Sildar in part armour Join the watchmen in the tower.
The companions in the woods move to follow the lone goblin that peeled off from his fellows. Heading east you all follow his spore in the woods. After a few hundred feet you break through a thick stand of brush and find not one but three Hobgoblins waiting for you in fighting stance in the middle of the clearing ...
Two are armed with long swords and shields wearing chain armour and are 30 feet form you, the other wears studded leather and has a long sword in a scabbard at his hip and holds a burnt stick in his left hand. He stands 30 feet behind his companions.
The Hobgoblin in the leather armour says in common, "Come fools, lets see how you fare against Maglubiyets best!"
The other two sink deeper into a fighting stance and begin to hammer their sword hilts against their shields.
Kryinor sees Sildar lean forward and hold his hand to his forehead, face creasing in concentration. His face then brightens with a smile, "Ah Master Druid a pleasant surprise! I did not expect you back so soon," he pauses, "Is that Carp with you! Please come in out of the dark!'
On seeing the hobgoblins Titus sinks low into a fighting stance, moving swiftly into attack drawing his two shortswords and casting Hunters mark whilst heading towards the right sided enemy with a steely gaze in his eyes.
I do not believe there were any light sources being used.
"Well met Sildar, It was an unexpected journey, but an important one. I will meet you at the gate"
Once inside the gate I will move toward Sildar extending my hand before pulling him in close for an embrace, whispering in his ear."Sildar, there is something ELSE out there. Guard the gate." Before pulling back and talking normally " I just came back to return Carp home and then i will be off again, if you wait for me here, i will be back in a few minutes. Then we can talk while i regain my strength, i'm sure Quelline is wondering where her son is."
I will move off to the sleeping giant Inn, Once there I will talk to Quelline "Good evening Quelline. I had feared that Carp would lose his adventurous spark after the fire, but is seems to have only fueled the burning desires within him. He trailed my companions almost all the way to the forest before being spotted."Pausing to turn and smile at carp" His stealth is quite remarkable." Turning back to Quelline "However my companions and i agreed that he is not ready yet for battle, he agreed to come back with me so, I have traveled through the night to bring him home safely to you, i pray that you will not be too hard on the boy. Titus has given him instructions to seek our Nilsa, if he wishes to train in the ways of a ranger. I must be off again to rejoin my companions, goodbye Carp, train well."
Moving back to Sildar and speaking quietly "I will not be staying long, I must get back to the company with all haste. We have made it to the woods and will hopefully find the castle on the morrow. Something was following me when i approached the town, I'm sorry to have startled your guards but my powers were near exhaustion as i approached and i did not know if the danger was in the town or without. I will rest for an hour, then i will be off again. i will investigate the smell if i pick it up again. If you hear my howl be sure to get the guards ready for a fight, I may need your assistance, hopefully whatever it was only passing by"
Sildar listens to your warning and nods his head. You notice he returns your handshake enthusiastically and with a firm grip. "Noted friend, thanks for the warning."
He turns to the rest of the militia gathered and says, "Post two more on the gate please. Everyone else stand down but stay ready."
@ The Sleeping Giant
Leaving Sildar at the gate to step up the watch presence, you make your way to the Sleeping Giant. Quelline's face is a mixture of anger and relief when she sees her boy. "Damn fool of a halfling!" says with tears in her eyes, "You'll get yourself eaten by wolves, or carried off by goblins..."
"Thank you Master Kryinor for returning my foolhardy son to me. It seems we are to always be in your debt..." She reaches up and gives you a heartfelt hug and moves back again wiping the tears away.
She grabs Carps collar and gives him gentle yet firm encouragement towards the stairs to the next level of the Inn. "Up stairs you young rascal and wash up, straight to bed without supper tonight."
At the news of no dinner you see the smile finally fade form Carps face, "But, but , Mother..." he begins.
Quelline folds her arms and looks at the boy with a wry expression, "You want a taste of adventure young man, then you can go hungry. Ask master Kryinor here how many meals he has missed on his adventures...its not all stories and dragon slaying you know!"
With that Carp makes his melancholy way upstairs to wash and to bed.
Quelline winks at you and quietly says, "I'll bring him up some thing small later, but for now he can enjoy the adventure of an empty stomach. Tomorrow I will talk to Nilsa and see if we can keep them both occupied and safe."
She thanks you again, bids you good night, and safe travels, then goes up stairs to see to her son.
@Back at the gate with Sildar...
The old knights bushy eyebrows rise as you tell him of your journey back to town, "From the eves of Neverwinter Wood to Phandalin in six hours! An impressive feat Master Druid, your power grows. Be assured if we hear your call we will come in force to your aid. Thank you again friend."
Sildar was not bothered about the howl and the disturbance, he assures you that it was good practice and would keep he green troops eyes open.
Both Sildar and Quelline are happy to provide some food and some where comfortable of you to rest before the return journey to your companions.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
To Quelline after Carp has retired upstairs - " Thankyou Quelline, If we should return, I will show young Carp what berries are good for eating so that he might not go hungry if he gets lost in the wilderness again. Good night.
At the Gate with Sildar "Thank you, friend." I will accept the offer from Sildar for food and a comfortable place to rest.
Once the hour is up and i feel the power to shift flowing through me again, i will bid farewell to Sildar before shifting into direwolf form and heading out the gate, taking a few moments to sense if the smell or presence from before is still around before heading north toward the triboar trail.

The wind is blowing towards town [at your back], from the North.
