The narrow space doesn't allow the imposing monster much freedom of movement, so the brutal electric discharge hits him square in the chest, momentarily dazing him.
Tarysaastands and regards the immense creature as the monstrous crab scuttled sideways on legs as thick as tree trunks, its armored carapace gleaming in the water and dim light. Saliva, thick and foamy, drifts from it's mandibles as it waved its wicked-looking claws about, each one large enough to crush a person whole.
A flicker of movement caught the creature's attention. Tarysaa spoke the arcane phrases and made the hand gestures which caused ice to form in her hand. Ice which grew into a dagger like projectile which she launched at the creature with all her power.
The ice dagger found its mark, striking the creature's exoskeleton. A sharp crack, like ice shattering on a winter pond, reverberated through the water. Yes, it struck but did not pepentrate nor strike any vunerable joints. It was then that the icy dagger exploded.
DEX SAVE: 14 or take 10 pts of cold damage from the explosion.
Zev edges forward until he’s nearly bumping Rocksaucers’ broad shields. Through the gap he finally spies the gigantic crab-thing, shell still crackling from Khelbluen’s bolt and flecked with shards of Tarysaa’s ice. “Big brute, tight space,” he mutters, keeping his tone low and plain. “Stone-man, you block it—just keep those claws busy. We’ll stab from behind you.”
Blade changed for a harpoon, he backs a pace to give the construct room to swing, then turns, scanning subtly the east passages for anything drawn by the noise. “Checking for surprises at our backs,” he adds, settling into a ready guard while the others bring their spells and javelins to bear on the cornered monster.
Action: Dashing passed Rs and Ta, not sure if each square counts as 15ft movement (triple normal) or 20ft (double the already doubled difficult terrain) but I think with either Zevriel should be able to arrive at the spot two squares east of Taryssa. Bonus: Cunning action to hide from anything that might be East (I don't suppose he'd be hidden from the crustacean), Stealth 18
The terrible pincer monster's physical resistance must be formidable: it recovers from the shock of Khelbluen's lightning bolt in time to realize the danger of the ice dagger shattering on its carapace—and then manages to leap back quickly enough to avoid the ensuing blast of cold. Returning forward with determination, the monster spots Zevriel darting across the intersection and extends one of its enormous pincers, attempting to snatch him!
[[ OOC: twice-difficult terrain means triple cost, not quadruple—in fact, the effect description never mentions double cost, but additional cost. However, as Zevriel discovers, the monster has a 10' reach with its pincers, so by moving from the square to the center of the intersection, our hero exposes himself to an Attack of Opportunity. ]]
But our hero is too agile, and the large claw arrives a second too late, just as the target has passed.
So Zevriel reaches the edge of the new room, which contains the broken and rotted remains of what must have been a central table and two or perhaps three stools around it. Part of the ceiling has collapsed, so this area is now in communication with the upper Level and the northernmost part of the room is littered with rubble (fallen from the ceiling and the floor of the level above).
There is another opening, in the easternmost part of the north wall. The openings must have once been closed by wooden doors, of which the hinges remain, with a few remains of rotten wood attached.
In the center of each wall is a roughly carved face in low relief (these are different carvings; it is not the same carving repeated).
In the meantime, a growl of frustration erupts from the monster's mouth, while short red tentacles surrounding it move as if of their own accord. The Crustacean Horror vents its resentment at Rocksaucers, attempting to tear him to pieces, first with the left pincer, then with the right.
The first pincer hits the target, causing the construct's sturdy frame to creak. Crustacean Horror then pulls its "prey" closer and, in addition to tearing off mechanical parts with the other pincer, also brings it close to its mouth, while the tentacles begin to lash it.
"You will... not harm... the New Lord... and his friends" Rocksaucers stubbornly declares, his gears working at full power as he struggles to free himself.
Ardana pushes through the water to where she can see the large crustacean and throws her javelin at it (12 to hit, 5 damage), then stays out of the junction (so 1N of where she is now).
Ardana's javelin bounces harmlessly off the monster's hard shell.
Mival, meanwhile, steps forward and tries to help the construct free itself, attempting to drag it away.
Elias encourages the doppelganger's heroic deed, infusing his words with magic: "Come on, heir of Rassalantar! If you can help Rocksaucers retreat, the monster will be in trouble in the narrow corridors! Mival, give us victory!"
Paqen, meanwhile, approaches, waiting for a more favorable position.
The bard's words give the doppelganger a strength that surprises the monster... but in the end, the greater weight of the large abomination prevails, and the construct remains held in place by the strong pincer.
Tarysaa, Zevriel and Khelbluen are up, for Round 2!
