Backstory: "Backstory, y'say? Well, gee, why's e'rybody gotta have a backstory? I mean, what if a feller just wants'a keep a bit o' mystery 'n intrigue, huh? Asides, it ain't none too in'erestin' anyway." Which is Bik's way of avoiding having to reveal his extensive but embarrassingly low-level criminal record, acquired over a lifetime of squalid poverty surreptitiously eking out his existence on the shadowy edges of the dungeons.
Why your character is coming to the dungeon: After realizing that dungeoneers would actually pay for his particular expertise, and that he himself might in the process abscond with some valuable artifacts, Bik has decided to venture further into the depths, to see if he might elevate his financial station.
If there are multiple groups, would you like to play in the same world or a parallel one?: No preference.
Species/Class (Subclass): Tiefling (flavored as more of a plasmoid-eque creature) Ranger (Going to be Beast Master)
Background: Sage
Backstory: Blexelglab was born to two ordinary human parents in a relatively ordinary town. Unfortunately, he was not normal. Not at all. When he first came out of the womb, he appeared relatively normal, although with darker skin than expected. But in the days that passed, it was revealed that he was marred-- chosen by Juiblex as a representative. His physical form slowly started deteriorating, turning him into a large, vaguely humanoid, black pudding-esque ooze. He retained skeletal structure, but the damage was done. His parents, kind-hearted that they were, retained love for him, but he eventually had to leave for their safety, in order to not draw the ire of the villagers. He took to the woods, attempting to befriend animals and learn from them there. However, none returned his affection. Eventually, hunters found him and, unfortunately, took him as a prize and presented him to the king, who immediately banished him to the dungeon, where all the other "monsters" are.
Why your character is coming to the dungeon: Forced to enter.
If there are multiple groups, would you like to play in the same world or a parallel one?: I think multiple groups in one world would be interesting, whether for PVP or raid battles.
Species/Class (Subclass): Wood Elf/Monk (at 3rd lvl. going Warrior of the Elements)
Background: Criminal
Backstory (Not super long, please): After a brief career as a criminal (getting caught on the very first 'job') Zin got a unique sentence. Zin was exiled to a secret monastery deep within the shadowy forest. There Zin was trained in the martial arts and gained mystical knowledge of the supernatural elements.
Why your character is coming to the dungeon (1-2 sentences): Zin wants to test what they've learned so far.
If there are multiple groups, would you like to play in the same world or a parallel one?: I can go either way.

"A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of the Great Light. Come in peace, and live beneath the sun again, where trees and flowers grow."
— The message of Eilistraee to all decent drow.
"Run thy sword across my chains, Silver Lady, that I may join your dance.”
The dice said "not today" so I'll go with point-buy if that's okay.
Character Name: Lyssa Silvershield Species/Class (Subclass): Human Cleric (Light) Background: Guard Backstory (Not super long, please): Lyssa is the youngest daughter of a small village's chief. She has been brought up to respect faith, law and order, entering the village's small group of guards as soon as she was old enough to hold a blade. The village is quiet so it's rare for her to attend to more than petty theft, but she yearns for the opportunity to show her skills. Why your character is coming to the dungeon (1-2 sentences): They both claim to be innocent, but her father knows better. Lyssa is to escort one Harold Stonecutter and one Corgan into the nearby dungeon to atone for their crimes.
If there are multiple groups, would you like to play in the same world or a parallel one?: My preference is parallel, but I would be open to either.
Backstory (Not super long, please): He comes from a long line of farmers. He is the third son of a poor farmer, Godor. Godor lost most of his family's status and wealth during his time leading the family. Keldin was larger and stronger than his brothers and tired of the labor as he came of age and so he left the farm to adventure.
Why your character is coming to the dungeon (1-2 sentences): Keldon is seeking glory and riches to make his family strong.
If there are multiple groups, would you like to play in the same world or a parallel one?: same world
1 Question for ancient languages. How vital is this to the story - would a Warlocks’s “read all languages” work as written?
A warlock would be able to read all languages not covered in the 'Curse of Tongues', which is in that link in the initial post. In short, anything created in a dungeon or dungeon-fied thousands of years ago can't be read no matter what, and most people assume that gods are toying with how magic works. This is mostly so the plot doesn't resolve at Level 5 with 'I cast Comprehend Languages' ending any and all intrigue. And also I want y'all trying to decode these languages manually to be at least an option for a sidequest, which again gets hard-countered by some usually niche spells.
It is possible to get information directly from your patron, provided they're old enough and willing to talk, but good luck.
I assume that @NycrolB was referring to the Eyes of the Rune Keeper invocation: "You can read all writing." But that invocation shouldn't be a problem in this campaign since it's no longer available in the 2024 version of warlock.
Interesting. I hadn’t realised it wasn’t in the 2024 list, anyway. But yeah, thank you. Good to know the underlying logic for similar spells and abilities though, too.
No worries. I just thought that I'd point it out. I'm still absorbing the changes in the 2024 rules, but I happened to notice that one. I've never played in a campaign where reading an unknown language was critical, but I've always thought that Eyes of the Rune Keeper is a cool invocation. Maybe I just like studying foreign languages too much, but it would be a cool ability to have in a campaign world that features ruins of ancient, lost civilizations. Reading inscriptions in old, forgotten languages that no one speaks anymore (or from off-world invaders from Wildspace or from Far Realm) would be a fun way for a DM to slowly provide clues about the lost history of a particular ruin or of the game world itself.

> 2024 Rules.
Should we stick to just what's in the 2024 PHB? Or can we still use some of the legacy content, like the Giant Foundling background or the Tabaxi species (using the rules for Backgrounds and Species from Older Books)? What about legacy legacy subclass, like the Path of the Giant barbarian?
Just 2024 PHB.
Would you permit Artificer or Illrigger?

I'd say Artificer is cool on the condition that you update once the new one comes out this August.
