Every year, the population of the small town of Oakhurst swells for a week in the summer as it puts on its annual Festival of the Golden Apple. Seven days of games, music, food, drink, and more boost the spirits and economy of the town, and it all leads up to the tournament on the final day.
The winner of the tournament walks away with the grand prize, the festival’s eponymous golden apple. This magical fruit has several properties that draw people to it: eating it can cure any disease and restore lost youth; it can also be sold for a pretty penny. The victor of the tournament might seek the apple for themselves or a loved one, or they could be interested in selling it or giving it to their patron.
You are attending the festival this year. Perhaps you are a local, perhaps you have come for the apple. Whatever your reason is, this year’s festival will put you to the test and change the trajectory of your life forever.
I am looking for four players and their 1st-level characters to take through the Sunless Citadel adventure, to be followed by a longer, more homebrewed campaign that will (hopefully) last for quite some time.
To apply, post with the following:
Character name: Species: Class/eventual subclass: Background: Ability scores: Backstory:
For ability scores, roll 4d6 drop the lowest 6 times, assign as you like; if you don’t roll at least one 15+, the lowest roll becomes 15.
Backstory will be the deciding factor when it comes to player selection. Flex your creative muscles a bit.
I will accept applications until Saturday evening (US Central time).
You can take the better one, and turn one of the 10s into 15.
Character name: Anne Species: Halfling Class/eventual subclass: Bard (Undecided, really depends on story going forward) Background: Acolyte Ability scores: 10, 14, 11, 14, 15, 16 (After improvements)
Backstory: Anne is a devoted follower of the goddess of harvest and fertility (Chauntea, Sune, Demitre, etc.). She spent her early life being groomed to be a housewife/caretaker, but was devastated to find out she is barren. Not knowing what to do with her life now she has run away from the church and her family, trying to find her place. When she heard of the Golden Apple and its properties, she jumped at the chance to fulfill her life's original purpose.
Will the in Apple 'cure' her? Will that make her happy? Will she find her purpose along the way?
All questions waiting to be answered if selected for the campaign

Initially born a human, the boy spent his life raised in the magical plains of the feywilds, constantly trying to keep up with the ever changing hills and valleys of the chaotic plain. Life was difficult initially, as the ever changing nature of the plains threatened his life on multiple occasions, but with hardship came character, and he managed to adapt, learning much about the plains and its denizens. Spending time in the most chaotic parts of the fey wilderness did strange things to him, however. Wherever he went, he could distinctly smell cinnamon, every new day welcomed a garden on his head, rests were difficult when they were accompanied by the fluttering of butterfly wings, and he could swear that his shadow was moving irregularly whenever he wasn’t directly watching it. But the chaotic magic of the plane gave him benefits as well. He found that he could harness the fey wild’s magic, allowing himself to change his shape and form at will. His unique talents caught the attention of the ruler of the feyrealms, an imperator curious about the common plane who decided to make the boy her new piece. She took him in and had him trained to live in the common plane. The boy didn’t really mind the name, nor the treatment though. He was being well taken care of, so he might as well behave, right? Years passed and he was given his mission. He would be the imperator’s eyes and ears. He would be her agent within the common plane, one who would tell her of life where the mortals walked. He would be her game piece. He would be her Rook. Upon entering this strange new plane, he heard news of a festival in a nearby town. The festivals of the feywild were always enjoyable, so off he went.

Ability scores: 13101571318
Character name: Riven Species: Aasimar Class/eventual subclass: Barbarian (Path of the World Tree) Background: Farmer Ability scores: 16 13 12 12 8 5 Backstory: Born beneath a radiant omen, Riven was raised on a family farm with his brother. The land gave him strength but little peace. Where his brothers hands were steady and sure, Riven's were restless, and his divine blood often flared in moments of fury. After their parents died, when the brothers inherited the farm, Riven's anger at his brother grew. One night it nearly consumed him. Fearing he would destroy the only kin he had left, he abandoned the familiar farm and walked away from a life he could not live.
On the road, his blood sang to him conflicting tunes. One divine, urging him toward a destiny he could not name. The other deeper, older, the murmur of roots in the dark, the land in need. Both demanded something greater of him, and both tugged him down differing paths.
Now these voices have drawn him to a festival where a golden apple is a prize. To some, the apple is profit. To him it is a sign. A key to healing, but of his soul or the land that calls to him in his dreams, the question remains. He does not know whether he follow his celestial blood, the growing whispers of the roots, or the storm inside his own heart.
So, that would swap the 8 for a 15, giving me: 15 / 14 / 13 / 12 / 11 / 11
@DungeonMxster - I don't suppose that I could trade the 11 for a 16 instead of the 8 for a 15? Or maybe swap the 8 and 11 to get a 15 and bump that 13 to a 14? That would be either:
One of the characters I have in mind makes more sense with at least one stat < 10. (It's based on a character that I've only gotten to play briefly in another play-by-post game ended after just one encounter. That game also used rolled stats, and my character was made to use a score of 6.)
Backstory: Harold grew up on the harsh frontier, learning survival from a young age. He tried to escape his situation with scholarship, and meditation at a nearby monastery, but he was drafted to mercenary work during one of the many border skirmishes. This forged him into a hardened survivor, skilled in combat. A charismatic leader, Harold quickly rose through the ranks of his mercenary company, earning a reputation for both bravery and cunning. Haunted by the loss of comrades and the horrors of war, Harold seeks redemption through his fists, hoping to make a lasting impact on the world. Driven by a thirst for adventure and a desire to prove his worth, Harold is always on the lookout for the next lucrative contract, no matter how dangerous.

He had a gift of learning to read the room, learning to try and please, and who to avoid. He learned by watching, the shifts in power, who got fed, and who had to scour to earn their dinner.
He was descended from high elves and grew up in the elven district, he was approached by an Acolyte of Erevan Ilesere who taught Sinak the ways of disguising his true nature, of changing his speech or behavior to learn valuable information, a spy within the fold of their faith, who learned secrets about the high born and how these secrets could be used against them.
He learned how to disguise himself, gain access to places that he shouldn’t and eventually, how to use magical means to aid in his efforts.
Sinak heard of Oakhurst and the tale of the golden apple, hearing that it could be used for healing, or at the least that it could be sold for a great amount of gold. He searches for ways of connecting with his deity, some path that is cloudy to him as of now. He tries to keep his magical nature hidden, sometimes shifting his personality to fit the situation yet his underlying drive and goal remains unwavering. He heads to Oakhurst to learn more and to see if seeking this powerful object is worth his time..

The elf knight Sir Caerith Elun’dar sat at the edge of the festival square, his silver cloak catching the late sunlight. A merchant, watching the young human across the way sparring with a practice blade, leaned closer and asked: “Why that one? The Moonblade order has always been elven. What makes the boy so special?”
Caerith smiled faintly. “Special? He is not. That is the point. He was born the son of a horse-tender, nothing remarkable in his blood. But when raiders came, he stood between a child and a sword, though he held no weapon himself. He would have died — and yet he did not falter. I saw in him a heart quick to shield others, a rare gift. So I made him my squire.”
The merchant raised a brow. “And the blade he carries?”
“A twinblade,”Caerith said softly, “an heirloom style of our order. He trains harder than most, for he has no strength of birthright to lean on. His body has learned the whirl of defense we call the Blade Barrier — not through talent, but through sweat and stubbornness. He fights like a shield turned into a storm.”
At that moment, Zevriel approached, having overheard the last words. He bowed his head, cheeks coloring. “I am still learning, master. Nothing more.”
Caerith’s smile deepened, a trace of pride in his eyes. He placed a hand on Zevriel’s shoulder. “Then prove it, my squire. Enter the tournament. Fight not for yourself, but for a cause you deem worthy. Should you win the Golden Apple, gift it to the one who needs it most. That is the true test — not of your blade, but of your heart.”
