“Bryant, Bryant Inman. Pleasure to meet you, and thanks, not many who pass through here bother to ask my name.” As he says this he places some more fresh bread in front of you. “This? It’s bread, made mostly from flour and water. You must have come from far away to not know of food such as this. You know what…” He ducks behind the counter and rummages for a moment before reappearing with a small book. “Here, A Traveler's Guide to the Western Plains. Might help you find your way around our customs a bit.” He places the book next to the bread.
The book shows some of the main travelers stops such as Deford, warnings of certain areas (bandits/Orcs/etc.), available food and what’s in it (for what can loosely be called delicacies). As well as a couple of touristy spots.
"Thank you again, Bryant-Bryant Inman. You have been quite gracious and helpful. I have had a pleasure sharing your roost and your food. I hope to do so again."
With that I drain the rest of the ale, put the bread he brought out in my pack, and head to join the others while flipping through the book.
As Edra finishes her meal, she tips her head to the barkeep and thanks him for the meal and hospitality before rising to her feet. Then in response to Estellen, she says, "I have been tracking and hunting beasts with my tribe for many of my years. These Orcs should be no different."
"I found something that may prove helpful as well." She reaches to unclasp an emerald pendant from around her neck and holds it in her palm for the others to see. "This was in the blacksmith's forge. He said it belonged to either Gaeryn or Rayna and the other holds another pendant like it." She pauses for a moment to turn the pendant over in her hand, studying it with a curious tilt of her head. "It seems to hold some manner of magic... I could feel it pulling me toward something last night, and just now I felt the same hum of magic."
As everyone begins to leave, Edra offers the barkeep her thanks once more and moves to take one of the bags. Seeing Estellen and Doc heading for the temple, she decides to follow Quilqwen to help him scout for tracks.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Estellen pauses at the door, intrigued by the pendant. "Interesting, this may help lead us directly towards the orcs. Of course, they have magic users as well, so if they've identified this then we may walk straight into a trap, or they might use it to throw us off their trail. We revealed ourselves yesterday, so they probably know we're going to come for them. May I see that?"
If Edra hands him the pendant Estellen will try to identify which way it is pulling as well as if it is caused by some sort of linkage between it and the other pendant. Arcana: 18
If Estellen can identify the direction he will try to cross-reference it with a map to check possible destinations where that line (pointing in the direction he is being pulled) intersects with convenient camping spots for orcs (ruins, caves, etc.) and if it seems to be moving or changing in intensity.
Edra shifts her attention from the tracks to Estellen as he speaks, stopping in her search to pass him the pendant. "Of course. You would know more about this than I would."
As he studies the pendant, Edra glances toward the hill where the Orc's illusion first appeared. "You may be right about a trap. Until last night, I was unaware they even possessed such magics..." She furrows her brow and adjusts the bag over her shoulder. "We have a clue, at least, with that pendant."
Violet wakes up just as Quilqwen and Edra are making their way out and bolts up, "Hey, you guys aren't gonna go have fun without me right?" She playfully punches Edra in the shoulder, "So. What are we doing?"
As the Orcs were last seen going west and the temple also sits upon one o the hills on the western side of the river, you all head the same way to begin with. After crossing the river those going after the tracks would be heading more NW and those going to the temple more SW.
The sky is clear and bright, only a few wispy clouds are in sight. The sunlight is not yet warm and the air is cold. A layer of frost covers the ground, making the stonework slightly slippery.
As you travel through the town the damage is now clear to see in the dawn sun. There are no bodies visible, but there are several blood stains on the road. They vary in size to approximately the size of a body to a small pool from a non-fatal wound. Buildings have doors kicked in or smashed to splinters. Almost no windows are still intact, but some shutters are closed over the broken windows. No shops are open and no-one is setting up any of the market stalls either. The streets are almost empty, only a couple of people can be seen and they hurry to their destinations.
Temple: Although not large, it is by no means a small temple. It is likely cared for by only one or two people (fulltime). The main body of it is built using large white stone bricks, which seem to be well kept. It is squarish/rectangular in shape with large high-set windows as well as a large domed window on top. The large wooden doors are closed and don’t move when pushed. Unlike the rest of the town, there seems to be little damage here, even the windows are still intact (although a few are cracked). There are also no blood stains or bodies in the area around it.
Tracking: It’s a while before you can find any sort of readable tracks, but many end up taking you back towards the town, or are eventually seen as animal or at least clearly not Orc. After about an hour of searching Quilqwen manages to find some heavy tracks that are recent. Although none are identifiable, there has been massive traffic here. The tracks lead off the main dirt road towards a grassy hill (the same one Edra pointed out after/during the fight).
(Time tracking; those at the temple are currently behind in time by about an hour to those tracking but feel free to mention extra things to say/did during the search)
(Are people happy for some of the adventures/content/story to go down darker paths? This won't affect anything yet, but is just for future consideration. Must be unanimous to do it and don't worry if you don't want to, there's plenty on the cards for either decision.)
"I think I found something. They head in the direction you pointed out last night. With luck we can follow them further on. We should go as soon as the others return so the trail does not fade to much."
Remembering the book i received I will pull it out and see if there are warnings given about the area the track lead toward, Sharing anything I find with Edra and Violet.
(I'm fine with darker, I've been watching Goblin Slayer so I think I'm ready)
Estellen walks up to the wooden doors, gives them a push, and then knocks with his staff when they don't give way. "Hello? Your town is safe for now, we have some information we'd like to acquire from one of your patients."
(After Doc and Estellen are done at the temple Estellen will head towards the blacksmith's forge in search of Sil)
(For when Estellen gets there)
"Sil, are you here? I have a few questions I'd like to ask you about this pendant."
What it says (paraphrased for brevity): Wolves, bears, panthers, snakes. Some in grassland, some in forests. But that they mostly stay away from people unless provoked or extremely hungry. Staying on the main roads keeps you safe from these creatures. There is just a small paragraph about Orcs: If you see them run or hide, preferably before they see you.
(I'm down for darker storylines, honestly there's not a lot that bothers me XP)
As they search for the tracks, Violet goes back to the area she spotted last night and double checks with her companions, to see if these were the tracks they were looking for.
"This temple...seems dark. Dull. And yet the sun shines high in the sky. How very...curious," says Doc, waddling his way toward the temple. Despite his better judgement, he continues on, interested in further exploring the darkened temple.
Temple: You wait a short time after knocking, but the doors do not move and no sound is heard from within. [Perception check please Estellen]
Tracking: Violet the tracks you found last night were indeed the tracks you were looking for, however in the different light it took you a little while to identify where you had seen them.
