"Doc, it seems as though the people inside are injured and do not wish to come outside. Let me investigate momentarily and then we can set about finding a way in"
Estellen will walk around the building, casting detect magic as a ritual, and will also look for any areas where entry might have been forced or windows that he could look through to see who is inside the temple. Investigation: 23
Temple: Looking around the temple, all the windows are far too high to look in through, but you do find a door at the side of the temple. The door is unlocked and unbarred. There are no signs of forced entry or even of any passage around it. Detect magic shows nothing but the faintest glow around your staff from all the magic which has flowed through it over the years.
Estellen will open the door and walk in, holding shocking grasp to knock unconscious anyone who attacks him (unless they're obviously hostile, like an orc or a zombie, in which case this hand is set to kill). Attack if needed: 24 Damage: 3
Temple: You enter into a small square chamber, 15ft x 15ft. In here is a simple bed, a small chest of drawers, and a bedside table with a book and an unlit candle on it. There is another door on the other side.
"This place, it smells of blood. I feel... uneasy here."
Estellen walks over to the door and checks if it's locked (without opening it). He searches the room for any sign of fighting or a struggle. Investigation: 13.
Estellen then knocks on the door, "Who's in there? Come out, we can help you."
If there is no response he will use his dagger to create a hole in the door so he can see through, large enough that he can stand a pace away and still see. Perception: 8.
Doc naturally stows his shield and finds his way to the book, clutching it in his left hand and opening it. He casts Light on the tip of his right index finger to illuminate only the words within, using the book to shield the light from showing too far towards the other door.
Temple: In the drawers you find a selection of simple clothes and robes, most have been repaired in some way. The bed has a worn mattress and a few thick blankets folded at the foot. Inside the bedside table is another book which looks like a journal, as well as ink and a pen, and a light pouch of coins.
The room is bare, obviously from a simple or perhaps poor lifestyle.
Temple: Most of pages just talk about a normal priest life. Donations, notes for the next sermon-like thing, annoyances at people, good things that would happen, etc. About a quarter from the end is where it stops. The last few entries are as follows:
The soldiers came back again today. When will they learn that the mead is for holy use only… If it’s for a birthday just BUY some! A man came in today with some sort of illness. Nothing I’ve seen before. Pus filled boils began to break out over his body. Slowly at first, but when I returned from my reading (barely an hour) the number had increased fourfold. A healthy amount of holy water drunk and a prayer to Lathander is all I could do.
--
The boils on Cadman have decreased substantially, I believe he will be cured by the dawn. Went down the hill to see the farmers and their dogs for lunch. They kindly accepted me and I offered a prayer to them as I left.
--
Cadman left healthy and even left 2 GOLD in thanks. Must make sure to check up on him later, after all he pay continue to be generous.
--
2 more have arrived with the same sickness, 1 is a farmhand I have often seen in the fields, the other is a halfing traveler of some sort. Holy water and prayer administered again.
--
The previous 2 are recovering, but 2 more have turned up! I must bring this up with someone soon. Another man came in today. Wounds from a blade of some sort, the people that left him here mentioned an Orc attack. He looked beyond saving, but I’ve done my best. I hope he lasts the night.
--
The man will clearly die before the day is out, I have begun preparing for it. Others are recovering, but slower this time. I’ll send word to Bryham’s clerics, maybe they can help.
--
No more have arrived today, but I fear they will soon. The man died sometime in the night. Dam! Kermul el dam. Urzaht el zaktl mal. Anzak ut Ezeek-Karash. Miz aka uzuk phag, ak dam oozk lek.
Doc quickly pulls Estellen away from the door and shows the book to him. "Read this. There appears to be a sickness overtaking these lands. Also, take note of the end: 'Ezeek-Karash.' This is most concerning."
Doc motions towards the door Estellen was looking through. "Let us prepare for the worst."
Doc will stow the book in his pack and recover the pouch of coins before once again raising his shield in preparation. (Did Estellen gather any information from his initial look past the door?)
([The following is a joke none of it actually happens in game] During the hour that they are looking for tracks Quilqwen says to the others. "How do you suppose it is going at the temple? I'm sure its fine. Its not as if they would have run into some weird disease that turned them into zombie orcs or anything crazy like that.")
Temple: The door opens into the main chamber. It should be clean, it should be light, and it should be airy. Normally the light would reflect off the white stone and create a feel of radiance. But covering the walls are symbols painted in blood. All the symbols are the same, each is about 3ft in diameter and is a shield with an axe, a hammer, a sword, and a spear overlaid on top at different angles. There are six bodies, all surrounded by a large pool of blood. Five of these are lying on simple beds, the sixth body is lying against the altar.
The air is close and stuffy in here and the smell is horrible, more than just the smell of blood. It’s so bad you can even taste it a bit as you breathe.
Curled up next to the altar is another figure, alive this time, wearing what was probably once a white-ish robe but is now clearly red. Both the figure and the body are wearing similar clothes and are/were likely the priests.
The curled up priest is rocking backwards and forwards sometimes mumbling, other times whimpering and crying. The change is stark and sudden between the two demeanors. He also seems to be cradling something in his hands. It doesn’t look like he’s noticed you yet.
The room is about 40ft square and you’re in one of the corners. Ahead of you is the altar (about 15/20ft away and on the far side are the beds with the bodies in. To your left are main doors (40-ish ft away)

The book is a religious book of Lathander, god of birth and renewal. (windows in this room make it well lit)

Doc puts the book down, searching the drawers, bed and bedside table for anything of interest. Investigation: 18

No signs of a struggle and the door is not locked. You get no response and the door is too thick and sturdy to have a hole poked through it.
"I don't like this. I don't understand why the priest's language changed at the end... could it have something to do with the disease?"
(Does the handwriting style change when the language does, or does it all seem to be written by the same person? Also, what language is it?)
"Very well, we don't have time to dally around. Doc, brace yourself for the worst and we shall get to the bottom of this."
Estellen will ready a shocking grasp as before and then open the door after Doc appears ready. Attack: 18 Damage: 6
It looks like Orcish, but the very old kind you've often seen in the many old history books you've read. The handwriting style does not change.
