Trying to stay reasonably close to Xel in case he needs help, Epos watches the wizard fiddle with the sigil (OOC: on H8) from between the trees (OOC: Epos on E7).
It's clear that Khial knows how to work his Thieves Tools, as expected of a thief. But his mind doesn't seem to comprehend the complexity of magic traps.

The black aura dissipates after Xel touches the sigil. To his surprise, the disfigured bodies beside him begin to tremble and shake. Deathly silent, they rise up from the ground.
OOC: Free Arcana check for Xel: 7.
Too late, once again, he recalls another of his instructor's lessons on Detect Magic: necromantic magicks appear as a black aura.
Surprise round: The disfigured bodies rise from the ground.

Khial equips his shortbow and rushes to J12 and shoots at the zombie in I8. "I remember a friend of a friend of a friend's cousin who raided a sacred tomb. Poor guy got chased out by a horde of skeletons", Khial suddenly (and unreasonably) monologues while aiming the arrow at the zombie.
He releases an arrow towards the zombie: Attack: 6 Damage: 9

Khial runs up to the edge of the grove. He feels the presence of the barrier, though he cannot see it; it is likely this awareness that throws off his aim as he fires at the nearest zombie. The arrow enters the grove (like the stick Epos threw in earlier) but flies wide. It does draw the attention of the zombie he fired at, however, which shambles towards him (to J11) and attacks: 23.
As the zombie battens down on him and he loses consciousness for the second time in less than a few minutes, Khial has time to reflect that apparently nonliving things can cross the barrier around the grove.
OOC: Khial is now dying for a second time. I'll allow his identification of the walking dead to stand, since he claims he's encountered them before, but normally you'll have to ask me first whether your characters recognize what they're fighting.
OOC: Can I do an Intelligence Check, Arcana Check or Religion Check to identify the creatures or see if I recognise them and will that take up my action or is it like a bonus action.
Epos thinks to himself, "Today is as good as any to die... Oh well..."
He calls out to HDP: "Please oh please hair doctor, try to save the Khial.
Epos then attacks the creature (OOC: on I6), with a sweeping strike using his staff Attack: 23 Damage: 5, then, planting his staff on the ground, he uses it as a fulcrum to launch him at a second opponent (OOC: on I7), attempting to hit it with a kick Attack: 12 Damage: 4
Using his acrobatic martial arts, Epos pummels the pair of walking corpses. His attacks batter them badly -- whatever killed and disfigured them didn't leave their bodies in very study shape -- but they remain standing.
Xel, you're up! (Making an Arcana check to identify the monsters requires a standard action.)
Xel winces at the blow struck by the now animated corpse.
He sees Khial get taken by one and Epos being severely injured by one of the two beside him.
Unfortunately, he cannot risk casting a spell so close without leaving himself wide open to their attacks. He'll need to put some distance between him and these undead creatures.
To make matters worse, they do not seem affected at all by the grove's barrier which is still active.
Xel will take the Disengage action and move to C10.

The Herr Doktor Professor waits to see what happens to the battle in the north, then moves next to the fallen Khial. He casts Cure Wounds on the fallen rogue: Khial is back up to 5 hit points. However, he is prone with the undead looming over him, and his bow is on the ground.
As he regains consciousness, he can hear the Herr Doktor Professor cursing: "Ack, my healing spells are for my kamaraden, not these idiots. But if these idiots don't survive, how will I recover ..."
New turn is up: Khial, you're first. HDP will now follow Xel in the initiative order.

OOC: Backread previous posts; one of Xel's successful Insight checks earlier provided a clue.
After touching the sigil carved on one tree (K7), Xel sees the black aura dissipate from the sigil; the magical barrier remains, however.
After he touches the sigil on another tree (H8) ...
OOC: Please inform me where your characters are located around the grove. HDP is in L13.
Trying to stay reasonably close to Xel in case he needs help, Epos watches the wizard fiddle with the sigil (OOC: on H8) from between the trees (OOC: Epos on E7).
OOC: Assuming I survive this, any suggestions guys on how to disarm this barrier/trap?
OOC: DM, Can we help? Perhaps Khial can give Xel advantage?
OOC: Help with what? Advantage with what? Just inform me where your characters are located, please.
OOC: Khial is standing in J14. I don't really know how to disarm a trap directly. But just in case this is right.
Intelligence Check: 18
Dexterity Check for using Thieves Tools: 20
It's clear that Khial knows how to work his Thieves Tools, as expected of a thief. But his mind doesn't seem to comprehend the complexity of magic traps.
OOC: All right, I'm placing Xel in H7; Epos is in E7, Khial in J14, and HDP in L13.
OOC: Khial, as part of your rogue training, you actually know that Thieves Tools are used against mechanical traps, not magical traps.

Initiative Order: Khial, Zombies, Epos, HDP, Xel.
Khial, you're up!
OOC: Remember that, as far as you know, you still can't enter the grove.

Khial takes 10 points of damage.

The remaining zombies gang up on on Xel: 16, 13.
One attack hits doing 5 damage to Xel.
Epos, you're turn is up!
OOC: Can I do an Intelligence Check, Arcana Check or Religion Check to identify the creatures or see if I recognise them and will that take up my action or is it like a bonus action.
OOC: I'm at 3HP BTW. Epos moves to H6 beside Xel.

OOC: I thought they would be considerably less sturdy than they apparently are, Oh well...
