"Sildar, Iarno seemed to have escaped through a secret passage way that we found in his quarters."
Nate then looks to Harbin "Yep... Bugbears. THREE of 'em." then addresses both Sildar and Harbin "It seems the Redbrands and the Bugbears are in cahoots. I just don't know how it all fits together. As for the creature... there was this creature that could telepathically communicate with you through your mind. And... it knew stuff. Like it gets into your head. None of us really saw the thing clearly... but it seemed mean. And big. I don't know if it's still in there but I think we should send a party back to deal with it ASAP."
Nate's going to try and act as tough as he can through all of this, trying to make the party and himself look ultra tough for what they just did.
Brom, Qelline is a farmer and is happy for you all to go and practise in one of her fields. You spend a few hours covering some basic drills; none of the three have any fighting ability, but they are all in good physical condition, quick and smart and they learn faster than most. Nevertheless, it will take a lot of work to turn them into competent fighters. Qelline's children come and watch the practice, and cheers their mother on. Nars watches from a distance, scowling but not allowed to join in.
(Sorry, not sure what you mean about questioning Larno - could you clarify?)
Nate, Sildar scowls, still clearly furious from the letter he has just read. The halfling townmaster splutters and mumbles something unpleasant. There's a really awkward moment as you all stand around in this small room in the Townmaster's Hall. Then finally Sildar says:
Well, Townmaster. It seems the Redbrand threat has ended. The leader has escaped, but he's not much of a threat with no soldiers and no resources. I think these fellows deserve a reward, don't you? The halfling scowls. A short argument follows, after which Sildar pays you one hundred gold, and the Townmaster another one hundred gold, for the destruction of the Redbrands and the liberation of Phandalin. Sildar additionally pays you 50 gold pieces, half the reward he promised, as you have brought news of Iarno but not actually resolved the issue - he's a criminal on the run, and he will pay the rest if you capture or kill him.
(You can add 250 gold, i.e. 50 gold each from these rewards).
ooc: back when the goblin attack wasnt Larno the one that went missing after we all thought he got captured by the goblins?
Brom taught what he could rather impressed and happy they was quick to learn "These drills are the fundamentals so you can practice them and improve" Assuming this took a few hours Brom meet up with the group after going to talk with the townmaster to tell him that investing in a militiawas a good idea to prevent something like the Red Brand from happening again.
(No, that was the dwarf Gundren Rockseeker, your employer who hired you in Neverwinter to take his cart of goods to Phandalin. Iarno was Sildar's contact in Phandalin, or at least the man he was supposed to meet, but was missing; Sildar assumed he was captured or somehow attacked, and asked you to find out what had happened to him. In fact, the letter you discovered showed that he was a bad guy and was the leader of the Redbrands who were oppressing the town.)

Quiet until this point Leo spots his chance to speak out.
"That is most gracious Townmaster, most gracious indeed. I believe my companions and I are of one mind when I say that we feel it to be our civic duty to hunt out evil in all its forms and deal with it in a swift and decisive way. In fact my good friend Nate here often comments about how loathed he is that more cannot be done for the betterment of Faerûn. You'll find my companions and I are of noble soul and kind heart and more than up to any challenge thrown our way..."
Leo continues to prattle on about the noble intentions of the party and listing the numerous virtues of each member. Over the course of the monologue he keeps one eye trained on Sildar, attempting to discern whether he is at all impressed by his words.
"Thank you Sildar. Thank you Harbin" Nate says as the party takes the reward. "Do you think this letter is somehow related or linked to Gundren's whereabouts?"
Nate remembers the lost mine that Gundren was heading for at the beginning when this all started, and the potential magical items that are there and wants to try and deal with finding Gundren for Sildar in hopes that it will lead him to this mine with these items.
Nate looks slyly at Leo... he definitely wouldn't call himself a noble soul, and he cares way more for himself than for the betterment of Faerun, but then realizes Leo might be trying to impress Sildar and just stands there and smiles.
Leo, Sildar is not particularly impressed by your words, but the actions of the group have definitely impressed him. You get a sense that he is optimistic about the future, though the news about Iarno has hit him hard.
Nate, when Leo finally finishes talking and you're able to get a word in, Sildar responds: I'm sure it is linked. But I cannot say how. I have no clear leads to follow, but it is clear that this Black Spider has his finger in many of the problems that plague this land. I would suggest talking to the other townsfolk, finding out what they have heard, and what they need. I wish that Gundren could be found, and I hope that delay will not cost him dearly, but in truth, it is likely that they want him alive, in which case he is not in imminent danger, or they want him dead, in which case he is already lost.
The meeting with Sildar and the Townmaster breaks up, with Sildar promising to be in the inn later in the evening, if you want to talk to him further. He and the Townmaster appear to want to discuss the dramatic news in private, so you are politely escorted from the Townmaster's Hall and find yourselves in the streets of Phandalin.
What would you like to do?
(Brom, the meeting broke up long before your training finished, though you can approach the Townmaster by yourself later in the day if you wish.)
"We will circle back with you Sildar once we figure this out. Thanks again."
Nate heads outside with the others.
"Looks like we have some investigating to do guys... I'm going to head over to the shop to unload this loot that we picked up along the way. I'll meet back up with you all later and then I'll give you all your share. You're free to come with me to keep me honest!"Nate laughs and then realizes now is likely not the time for jokes.
"After that... I'm going to go and see Sister Garaele. She wanted to know how we fared with the Redbrands and also mentioned some other things she needed. I get a good vibe from her some for reason so that's where I'm headed after the shop."
"Anyone coming with me?"
Nate will then head to Barthen's provisions and greet Barthen. "Hello again friend! I was wondering if you might have some time for some trading?"
Certainly, young man. From what I hear, you and your friends have done this town a great service, I would be happy to help. What do you have to trade with me?
Barthen seems tired, but genuinely happy to see you.
(I will assume the rest of the party is going along with Nate unless told otherwise, but feel free to do as Brom has done and go about your own tasks.)
"Thanks so much. Yes last night was pretty intense to say the least. We are happy to have helped. The way the Redbrands were treating this town was unacceptable. Anyhow... here's what I've got."
Nate puts down the lot of the items that he plans to barter with.
Weapons: 1 Spear, 2 Daggers
Trinkets: golden earrings with tiny rubies set into them, bugbear leader's eyepatch, silk pouch containing five carnelians, two peridots, and one pearl.
"Also... not sure if you have any interest in this?" Nate then pulls out the Fireball scroll.
"How much gold could you give me for all of this stuff?"
Nate senses that the others might disagree with selling the jewels and earrings as who knows who they originally belonged to, but he doesn't really care about that too much and so is just going to try to get the deal done before one of the others says anything.
If Omnia came with Nate to the shop, Nate would've also said:
"Omnia - remember you have those swords and bows from before? Do you want to sell them now with me?"
OOC: Omnia check your inventory, I had noted that you had taken a few swords and shortbows from one of our earlier battles.
Also, once we are done at the shop, however it plays out, Nate will split up the gold. I'll role play it once we are done in there. (we have a TON, even if we don't end up selling anything).
Goodness, that's a lot of stuff. Taken from the thieves' hideout, no doubt. Well, I don't recognise anything that belonged to anyone in town. I reckon this all came from trade caravans they robbed along the Triboar Trail.
Afraid I don't buy and sell weapons and armour; you'll be wanting Linene over at the Lionshield Coster for that. And sorry, not the magic scroll, I truly don't know anyone in town would be interested in such a thing. In Neverwinter maybe?
Well, the Townmaster replies. I suppose I cannot stop the people of this town, if they choose to form a militia. Funding will be limited, as finances are tight at the moment. You said that Qelline was involved? I might have known, fool woman. Send her to me and we will sort this out. And since I doubt you and your friends will be sticking around for long; he sneers at you; you're not the type, are you? Well, since our new 'militia' will require training, I suggest you find someone who is able to provide it. Master Edermath, perhaps, or your friend Sildar.
From his tone, it sounds as if he's regretting allowing the militia already, and you suspect that Qelline will have a challenge to make it a reality, but he ushers you out without going back on his word. Good day, sir.
Brom would thank him for his time but not in the gentle way he was speaking before, not after that sneer but he guess it had something to do with his group taking a reward so he didn't bark at the man. Instead he would go find this Master Edermath and send Qelline over.
Nate snatches up the gold from Barthen. "Thank you good sir! I will head over to the Lionshield Coster then to sell the weapons. No problem about the fireball scroll... I am sure I will find someone along the way who can use it."
Nate is actually a bit surprised that Barthen actually bought the jewels and whatnot given they were likely stolen. But Nate feels better about himself knowing that Barthen was willingly buying the stuff and he said that he didn't recognize any of it. Nate has no guilt about the money.
Nate bids Barthen another farewell as he leaves the shop. He will then walk around the town trying to find Brom. Once he finds Brom:
"Brom... I remember you saying you had spoken to Linene Graywind over at the Lionshied Coaster yesterday... you know, before we took out the Redbrands. I am heading there now to unload some weapons. Do you want to come with me? I am sure Linene will be happy to hear about the Redbrand demise and perhaps we could follow up with locating her missing goods."
So - if Nate doesn't end up finding Brom, he will just go to the Lionshield Coaster by himself and greet Linene. "Greetings Madam - how goes it today?"
Brom will approach the Town Master later after the training session and pitch the militia idea.
Bromduhr, Goliath Fighter.
Brom, by this time, both the party and Sildar have left, and the Townmaster is alone, furiously writing at his desk.
You? You are... one of the... 'adventurers', are you not? Why have you come here? There's no more money, if that's what you're asking.
You put forward your idea of a militia; make a Persuasion check.

So - if Nate doesn't end up finding Brom, he will just go to the Lionshield Coaster by himself and greet Linene. "Greetings Madam - how goes it today?"
Nate then thinks for a moment. If he is able to find Brom, Nate will actually offer to give his 2 daggers and his 1 spear to Brom for the militia.
"Brom... do you think these weapons would come in handy for the townfolk?"
Nate hands over the 2 daggers and 1 spear to Brom.
