Grenl thanks Kaylyn for the Heal. Having seen Royan's fighting style, she also suggests that if they intend on confronting the Outcast, that Royan might make use of Durnn's shield. It is too big for any of the goblins to use.

Royan inspects the shield. He can tell it is well-crafted, and finely detailed, but recall any particular lore about it or identify its origin. While he is checking it over, it starts to glow with a soft blue light in response to Kaylyn's spell. The only other items that glow in a similar way is the healing potion (and other items currently in their possession).

"They would", assured Erky, and indeed, everyone began to move to the safe room. "I think we can leave Bjorn to guard us. At least for some time." Erky pet his now favourite animal, searched for the quiet corner and prepared to take the rest.
The remaining goblins lead the group through their lair to a room on the far side. What might once have been a cathedral is now Goblinville, a small village thick with the filth of years of goblin life. Scores of wall- and floor-mounted sconces filled with violet-glowing fungi provide illumination. Dozens of goblins go about their daily business, which involves a lot of rudeness and violence. Along the southern wall is a heaping pile of assorted items, including wagon wheels, broken armor and rusted arms, chests, small statues, antique furniture, and artwork. There are about thirty goblins in the area, but you can see now that most are common workers or children, with only a handful of remaining combat-ready goblins. The majority eye you nervously, but seem placated by the presence of the shaman, particularly as word is spreading of the death of their hobgoblin overlords.
The room they provide isn't much better than the main living hall. The stench, garbage, and carrion here are evidence of years of use by unsanitary tenants. Tattered hides stretched on frames form six unstable hammocks around a much-used firepit. Battered cooking equipment is mixed indiscriminately with broken or worn arms and armor. At least it is quiet and defensible. There is a bit of commotion at one point during the night as the voice of another large goblinoid can be heard shouting somewhere outside your room, but the words are too muffled to comprehend, and they stop after a short while. Other than that, all you hear is the usual background noise of goblins going about their daily activity. Toward the end of your rest period, Bjorn gives a small grunt and then vanishes.
All can now tick off a Long Rest. Rhayna casts Identify as a ritual, and the shield is a Shield +1. Grenl has indeed indicated that the shaft in the fight room leads deeper into the citadel, and can be traversed using the thick vines that surround it.
That pretty much concludes the first half of the adventure.

Rhayna adjusts her thick glasses, put on her black fedora, and has her trusted Journal on her left hand. When she goes to check on her side for the whip, she remembers that she needs to retrieve it at the bottom of the shaft. "May She Who Guides shows us the true path down that shaft. I am ready."

After the morning prayers were done, modest breakfast consumed and general preparations to the travel made, Erky declared his readiness to continue the journey. He contemplated for a while summoning of another animal but ruled against it for now.
Royan rose early, stretching and running through a few drills to practice his sword work. The patterns helped bring a sense of calm to his mind. His instructors on the Fist had worked for a long time to try and help him maintain this sense of calm and control in battle, but he struggled. Regularly it slipped away and the rage took over. Still, he practiced the patterns, hoping to one day find the discipline they taught.
After a brief meal Royan was ready to head out. He turned to the goblins,“Point the way. We will do what we can to return your Tree to you.”
Kaylyn awakens and stretches her sore muscles. She spends a minute or so using Prestidigitation to clean up her clothing and armor. After breaking her fast she joins the others.
Grenl, the goblin shaman, greets you when you awaken. She mentions that during your rest, Balsag the Hunter, a particularly nasty bugbear, ascended the shaft. He resides below where prey is easily found, and often comes to deliver his latest catch to the chief in return for payment. But this time he came because he found the body of a hobgoblin at the base of the shaft, strangled by a whip, as well as the severed head of another. He berated the goblins for failing to prevent the death of the chief and his lieutenants, then returned down the shaft.
Grenl warns that those below are aware of the presence of a group of outsiders in the citadel and may be on alert. She asks that you try to not harm any goblins you find, but persuade them to return to her, and she gives Erky a phrase in Goblin language to say if you meet any. Finally, she directs you to the shaft and shows you the best vines for climbing down.
The shaft descends 80 feet into the gloom, but the vines are thick and easy to grasp, and you descend into a large square chamber. Luminescent fungus, shedding violet light, clings to the walls and ceiling of this wide cavern. The air is damp, chilly, and redolent with the odors of loam and decay. A layer of earth, mixed with rotting vegetation and the remains of cave animals, covers the floor. Several varieties of mushrooms and fungi grow on the detritus, as well as a few saplings. Two skeletons in thin, moldy robes, tend the fungus garden using shovels and a rusted wheelbarrow to turn the soil and spread compost. There is no hobgoblin corpse visible, but some tracks can be seen from your present location leading north which suggest the body was dragged that way. Closed doors exit the cavern in the north-east and south-east corners, and a breach in the north wall appears to lead to another darkened cavern.
The shaft opens in the south-west corner of the cavern (where the dotted circle is). There is one skeleton 25' to the north, and another 20' to the east, but neither are making any sign they notice you or care about your presence.
"Can anyone take those things out quietly?" Kastix asked pointing to the skeletons.

"Do you mean to say, those dead are not, actually, dead but some kind of un-dead? Would not put it past inhabitants of this inhospitable place." Erky took a fur-boll out of his beloved bag. "I can try to summon the bear, he would pulverise the bones in no time."
He throw a boll: 5 but the bear did not come. Instead a slender jackal quietly set by his side. "I am sorry, this thing is amazing but quite unpredictable. Are you absolutely sure we can not just leave those skeletons alone?"
