Gerrack, expertly skins and prepares the hare he hunted. (OOC: and because you rolled so well i'll say you cooked it well too.) Despite Gerrack's lack in training to cook, Gerrack does a good job and has a satisfying meal.
Edmond, (OOC: i'll need either a survival check or an investigation check for you trying to find firewood.)
Finnian, starts searching but has trouble seeing anything. its clearly too dark to go find fire wood, better let the other members of the group try. (OOC: if you use a torch or some way to give yourself some light i'll let you try again, and you can roll a survival or investigation check.)
(OOC: @ everyone, so i have Gimble on the first watch, Edmond and Gerrack on the second watch, and Finnian on the last watch.) [next story update i plan on doing the three watches and the following morning. If you want to all continue talking at the camp fire and what have go ahead, if not i'll be advancing the story.]

As the night falls, Finnian makes a note to look into some magical means of seeing in the dark or casting light in the future. Without such an option, he lights up a torch and continues his search, still remaining within hailing distance of the camp, and casting mage armor on himself as a precaution in case this night turns out to be as interesting as last night.
Investigation: 22
(Also, just checked spellbook rules and found out that wizards start out knowing six spells at level 1, not four, so I went ahead and added those to Finnian's book)
Gimble, I know what you're thinking, and I applaud you for it. There may come a time and we go into a Goblin Lair and clear it out room by room through burning hands, magic missles, well aimed cross bow bolts, and several knocks on the head and a blade or 2 in the midsection. But Finnian's right - we all need some way of either seeing in the dark or carrying around a light of some kind
Let's keep the Red Brand uniforms for now out of view. I'd like to know more about them as background if we ever decide to use that sort of trick - er dodge? disguise, yea that's the word.
Meanwhile, for these Goblins before us - I think it'll be either bung all their holes up, or Gerrack's idea and lure as many of them out of their lair and ambush them on the surface.
Perception 21, for when it's needed for the 2nd watch
Edmond, having trouble finding proper firewood. He would find some trees and logs but the wood would be sub par for a fire. Finnian comes over with a torch and assists Edmond, before too long they find enough for the evenings fire.
Everyone discusses plans for how to deal with the goblins and enjoys their evening meal. (OOC: reminder, if you haven't already mark off a ration make sure to do so.)
Gimble and Misty take the first watch. Ever watchful after last nights surprise, Both make sure to walk around the camp and listen carefully for any noises. The only sound they hear is a wolf howling in the distance.
Gimble and Misty make sure Edmond and Gerrack get up for their turn to watch. Gerrack is a bit distracted, looking at all the stars in the sky, but despite not looking does not feel any danger. Edmond on the other hand has been thoroughly trained, nothing would distract him from doing his job. Edmond very confident the area is clear.
Finnian, taking the last watch. With how quiet the watch started Finnian doesn't take it too seriously and studies his spellbook instead. (OOC: i'm glad you caught that and got the appropriate amount of spells, i don't know the wizard class well so i probably wouldn't have caught it even if i looked at your sheet.)
Everyone has a much better nights sleep this evening. (OOC: go ahead and take a long rest [even though i don't think anyone took damage or used any limited abilities.]) the morning comes (July 16), the party does their normal morning things.
(OOC: merry christmas to those who celebrate it. i imagine we will be posting less frequently over the next two days or so. and does everyone want me to skip ahead three days to get to the goblin ambush site so you can start heading to the cave?)

the party continues down the road for three more days. (July 19th)
the party knows this is the day they will deal with the goblins. they make it to the ambush site, or what they believe to be the ambush site. there is no sign or markers of it being the same spot, since all the corpses that were here are not. GERRACK is addressing the party (OOC: because this entry is long, I am going to forgo the stuttering, however, you can assume Gerrack is speaking without confidence and stuttering as appropriate, almost disbelieving that anyone is listening to his nerdy plan.)
PERCEPTION: 16 INVESTIGATION: 7
"Should we need to enter a dark goblin cave, I have a tinderbox and a hooded lantern. We can bring light into the darkness, and even reduce that light so that it is not so bright as to give ourselves away if we are sneaking. Also, I have some skill with my pan flute. As I can fly, I might be able to make a decoy to draw the goblins out, simply by playing my flute as I fly above the entrance to their lair. They may be able to shoot bows or throw javelins at me, but I can avoid their grounded attacks, and provide a distraction while the rest of you act. Alternatively, we can smoke them out, as Edmond suggested." Gerrack sketches in his journal and then rips out the page, sharing it with the rest.
(Gerrack has drawn an image of a cave entrance set into a stone wall on the left edge of the paper. Beyond the cave entrance to the right side of the page is open ground with some scattered cover... a few trees on both the right and the left side of the cave entrance. Behind some trees Gerrack has drawn blue "X's" - representing the members of the party. They are in two-person teams, and spread across the south side of the battlefield, rather than lumped together in a large group or scattered randomly across the entire area. This way the group is spread out, but not at a risk of hitting each other with friendly fire. Also, it gives the goblins just one direction to run, should they choose to retreat: north. Just at the inside of the cave entrance Gerrack has drawn a red flame, meant to represent a bonfire - as Edmond suggested, to smoke out the goblins.)
"If the goblins have no other exit, they shall have to flee from the one entrance we will have found. If they have multiple exits, then we will hopefully hear and see them fleeing from these hidden entrances, and their forces will be scattered as we deal with them. Either way we will have the advantage of surprise. Also, we must not forget to investigate the cave after the battle is done - for information, hostages, and of course, any stolen goods they might have amassed."
As morning comes and the first few rays touch his face Gniff sits up in his crude small campsite. He takes a deep breath and stretches mightily, or as mightily as a Lightfoot halfling can. He scratches his messy brown hair as he stands, the patch of woods around him practically singing with activity of nearby animals.
"Yes, yes, hello to all of you too," the tanned man said as he quickly and efficiently sweeps his camp to reduce his footprint. He shrugs on his chain shirt, secures a mace to his belt and grabs his pack. As is usual he takes about ten minutes to ritually cast Speak with Animals.
"So, what news today my friends? Anything I should be aware of?" He asks merely saying it out loud to the busy forest.
Finnian nods along with Gerrack's plan as he readies himself for what is to come. Before they get any closer, he gathers a few extra stones for his sling and casts mage armor on himself, certain that it will be a valuable use of his magic. "The plan seems plenty well conceived, but we'll need to be wary of a potential backdoor or two. Wouldn't do for we the ambushers to become the ambushed, no?"
(OOC: Just a reminder that the map Gerrack drew is an example, since the party does not yet know where the goblins are, what the landscape looks like, or if they are in fact even in a cave at all. It's a suggested strategy in case they are in a cave that will have to be adjusted to real life circumstances when they're found...)
After Gimble wakes up he walks around the camp to take in the fresh air and stretch out some. Upon returning he sits to fill his belly with some food from his pack while listening to Gerrak’s plan.
“I like it. And depending on what this cave ends up looking like if we really are gona try to smoke them out I could toss down some ball bearings. Maybe they’d be so disoriented by the smoke they wouldn’t see them. I’d say the aftermath could put us at another potential advantage.”

Looks good Gerrack. No matter which way they turn we will have at least 2 teams shooting at them from the sides :) And I like the idea of ball bearings at the entrance, that will mean extra congestion for the key first few seconds :) If we find we need to pull back we just go straight back here by the road. Yes, by all means we ought to look the place over, too, before we try to draw them out.

Unless you have something planned for the trip there, I'd say skipping to the caves is fine.
