"What can we do, Kellen? Why am I paralyzed by fear of these lights? We have to rescue the boy and Willa. But this terror tells me we should run. Maybe we should cut our losses and hit the road. Find some less scary monsters to slay? But...we..."
"For now we should go back so that we do not end up getting into something we cannot handle."Malvech says as he tries to motion for the rest of the group to step back.
(OOC: How close together are Pyre, Jasper, and Kellen? Are they within a 20' radius sphere?)

Malvech slowly backs away as he keeps his arms out wide to make sure that his companions stay behind him. "If they make to attack we should more then likely run."
The motes stay within the odd dividing line on stones that Malvech noticed. They do not pursue the party as they continue to back away once again traveling back to the footpath where they first discovered the cart horse now wandered out of the forest and back to the tavern. Even the whispers the party heard before seem softer also nonexistent. The footpath is before you with the cairn of one large rock, one medium size rock, and one small rock at the top. The forest presses in becoming thicker as the footpath seems to narrow.
OOC: How does the party proceeds.

Kellen exhales shakily. "I hate to abandon the fresher trail, but I don't know if I can face those things again right now. I have a couple of spells that might help if we wanted to go back there later. Maybe we should use the rest of our daylight to follow this other path and see where it leads?"

"Either way we need to find a way forward to find the children. The longer we wait the less likely we will find them in one piece." Malvech says, continuing to backstep.
"Perhaps the temple is the way to go? There were hundreds of those wil-'o-wisps in the graveyard. I know enough to know that we won't survive if we go that way. I agree with Kellen and think we should follow the other trail."
"I can take point this time. Give a little range for Pyre and Malvech in case we run into something more... manageable." Kellen shudders once, offers a quick prayer to Ioun for reason and clear thinking, then starts down the path. "Let's try to keep quiet, just in case."

Kellen sees the barrow as a burial place. The drag marks ended outside it and have been disturbed. He knows as a cleric that undead are in the world. He also knows that the wisps are undead. The villagers spoke of beasts which could literally mean anything as well as undead. He however is not sure either way. The cleric then scouts ahead and easily finds the footpath again as it moves into the thickening forest itself finding the same odd lack of nature sounds as before. He knows that even on a fall day something....anything should be making noise around him and the party.
Jasper notices the motes are staying behind the barrier and do not follow.
Malvech grips his weapons tightly one more, his tail flicking back and forth as though to show that he is alert and ready for a fight."Let us continue upon out original path then."
