Dorian laughs. "Marvelously engineered!"he exclaims, and taps it fondly before moving away. "Not to fear, I'm not so easily tempted as that. I've spent too many decades working around dangerous machines and explosive materials to disregard safety measures around such dangers."He tuts at Ctenmiir. "Naughty behavior like that is why you're not allowed out."
Spending another day in the city stocking up on supplies and consulting and conferring over the best route to take allows Huarache to find a Moon touched sword.
"I think we can all agree letting the vampire out would be a bad idea." Leann agrees.
During the day they finish supplying up, she would be talking with guides and others in the area, working to refresh her out-of-date information on the area. She lived here a good portion of her life, but that was ten years ago now, so she needs to learn what changes to expect on the path they have picked.
(Let me know if she needs rolls on any of the above.)
I'm actually a big fan of this item, and I'd kind of like it in the game. If you can't afford the price, roleplay something and they'll probably find a way I to your hands.
Your investigation into the accuracy of 5he maps proves them o be pretty accurate. The reports of undead are all over the place, though, some aligning with what you have marked and others in stark disagreement. From the scale at which they are drawn, the mountains to the South appear as anyone would recollect having been there recently. Ooc: If I get the sense of the party overall, you want to start by boat from the harbor. I'm going to put you there and if players don't like it, you can check around. If anyone wants to hire one of the guides from town, I'll list them with breif descriptions. You can pool your funds or possibly ask Xephries for an advance if you choose to take any. They would know Chult overland and might help with the locals better than a dwarven vampire. (You would probably know he's a dwarf from mundane conversation by this point, though mechanically it's not very relevant)
"That sounds like a fine route to me," Dorian says. He'll spend the remainder of the day studying maps and histories of the region (either here or at whatever local library might be around) looking for what potential dangers are likely to be found, or hinted at in the region: flora, fauna, arcane. He'll also make at least a passing attempt at finding out anything there might be on record about Ctenmiir, or vampires and water.
Huarache speaks Dwarvish; he's probably picked up on the lilt. We have Leann, who's been here more recently than Huarache, who's been off in Lantan for 15 years, but a guide wouldn't be a terrible idea. Huarache's open to hiring one, but he has no strong opinions one way or the other.
Also, come to think of it, Huarache would also like to look for a library to study the local flora, fauna, and weird arcana (phrased as such because it rhymes). He also wants to get a general idea of the technology level in Chult, having only returned from Lantan, aka Artificer Gnome Island.
"It seems you have everything you need." Anaxi Xephries bids you all farewell. "And try not to lose the valuable artifact I've lent you."
edit:
You meet at the city gates, present your license of exploration, furnished by the Cartophile, to the guards. The shorter of two lightly armed and armored watchmen reads your permit, scowling. 'Youre heading all that way south, just the lot of you, then? I eager we'll be seeing at least one of you back here within a tenday. But that's alright, well be here, waiting for you" he gestures to his hip as he partially unsheathes his sword, revealing it to be a sunblade (having the hilt of a longsword, bit no blade) the other guard laughs loudy at the black humor.
Ooc: my fault, I saw the suggestion and got excited to have you meet the harbormaster. Perhaps another time.
FYI we're taking travel by the leg to keep things moving and get to the barrier peaks more quickly, so while the hexes per day are consistent with in-game time, random encounters per leg rather than per day will be used, A leg is approximately the distance between points of interest, landmarks or geographic features. All you need to do as a group is designate a navigator. If anyone wants to pay for a guide, call it and pay it. They're the navigator, otherwise roll initiative, first post with initiative 15 or higher designated the guide. You can pick yourself, another player or an NPC.
I already know for the first leg, at least, where you're headed, but the roll is based on the navigator.
For the best, considering that Huarache doesn't want to be the guy at fault if he navigates wrong. He has no strong opinions on whether to hire a guide or not. It suddenly occurs to me that we should have discussed whether to hire a guide or not better. We still have time, due to Huarache's not-15 roll.
Tortle are good at survival, and Tel had lived his whole life in Chult. Too bad the roll wasn't good.
We also have a ranger and at least one other Chult native, so I'm not too worried about your navigation. But if someone actually wants a guide, because it came up, then let them buy it, I say. And if someone invests in something, I'll do my best to make it relevant.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.

Shutorn says, "I wouldn't be a good pick for navigation duties, so I'll just keep watch for any signs of danger as we travel, but I would like to recommend that we start by heading up-stream by boat, roughly southward along the River Tiryki, until it bends toward the west." (Hex #4325 on Laurender's beautiful map)
"From there," he continues, "we should disembark and continue on foot to Port Castigliar."
Dorian laughs. "Marvelously engineered!" he exclaims, and taps it fondly before moving away. "Not to fear, I'm not so easily tempted as that. I've spent too many decades working around dangerous machines and explosive materials to disregard safety measures around such dangers." He tuts at Ctenmiir. "Naughty behavior like that is why you're not allowed out."

The route plan is on the previous page, and it starts with an 11 day walk to Kitcher's Inlet, where we'll get on the boat.

If you want a guide, pick from these. Either way, let me know who is navigating for the first stretch.

The guides who appear the most trustworthy would probably not get along with our undead companion, a pity.

We are rolling initiative to see who gets to be the first navigator. First person to roll 15 is that person, so I guess you're the navigator.
