As you depart Everlund through its north gate, the multiple turrets of Moongleam Tower rises tall at your back, as if bidding a silent farewell salute. The morning sunlight and crisp wind grant a pleasant, fresh feeling. The roadside sign just outside the city points north, and says "Rauvin Road North: Zymorven Hall, Silverymoon, Rivermoot."
The horses and ponies seem eager as you are to start out, so brisk is their pace away from the city gate, down this well-established stretch of stone road.
During the first hour of your journey, a flock of birds far off to the left can be seen, flying south. Their calls reach you, sounding lonely among the quiet blowing of the easterly wind.
After a few hours, towards lunchtime, a group of travelers can be seen coming down the road towards Everlund on foot, accompanied by an armored soldier on horseback, bearing the insignia of the Army of the Vale.
The Army of the Vale has a large presence in Everlund and Silverymoon, as well as places like Olostin’s Hold, since the end of the War of Silver Marches.
The travelers look chipper and in good health. As they approach, one of them, a moon elf, waves as a means of friendly greeting.
As the group draws near, you can see it is a mixture of elves, half-elves, and humans, all of common appearance. A few of them are singing a jolly tune, while four in the back of the group are pulling a large hand cart laden with supplies.
They smile at you as they pass, seeming to be in good spirits. The soldier accompanying them stops to give you a nod, and asks where you’re headed on this fine day.
Ink, unused to seeing people happy, spends his time looking at the people seeking out some sign of trickery. He silently directs Quill to be vigilant overhead. Ink will leave the talking to Rip.
The general smell of alcohol is easily discernible in their midst, and more than a few bottles seem to be making their rounds in the group. The moon elf, who waved at you earlier, clasps her hands together and merrily says, “Blessings of Khalreshaar on you!”
They go on their way if unimpeded, singing blissful songs of falling leaves and sparkling night skies.
Then road ahead seems clear, and the soldier who addressed you moments ago shrugs and continues his slow patrol towards Everlund.
The moon elf looks taken aback by Ink’s statement. “Not drunkards, my fellow tel’quess,” she replies in Elvish, “but determined merrymakers!” In Common, she says, “We are part of an interfaith initiative to spread the fun and frivolity of Liars’ Night in these dark times. You know, a big party, like they do in Waterdeep! Gods know we need it.”
In response to Rip, she shrugs. “Not much news, really. We just came from the Moonwyvern, very busy place right now. But the road has been mostly clear and pleasant, and there’s soldiers patrolling from here to Silverymoon and beyond!”
The other travelers interrupt with a sudden outburst celebratory gestures and raucous cheers of anticipation. The moon elf smiles. “Anyway, the big night is tomorrow, and Everlund is the big meeting place. You should come and celebrate with us, sir halfling!” She finishes as the caravan recedes down the road towards the city.
Ink mumbles to himself, "Fun and frivolity... Difficult to improve oneself when it's fun and frivolity.... I'm sure Mielikki would appreciate their extra fine tuned senses now."
He sighs, saying, "Corellon Larethian protect him."
The rest of the journey is uneventful, though the weather is pleasant enough for this time of year.
With your determined pace, you reach the Moonwyvern Inn well before dinnertime, and just before sunset. The lands around here are farms and pastures, with a tiny hamlet tucked into the hillside about a mile off the road to the east.
Built atop a large grassy knoll, the Moonwyvern Inn is a structure that looks as if it were built at stages over the last couple hundred years, with extra wings and additions haphazardly cobbled together in varying styles. In places there are three floors, and it looks as if there is a basement or cellar as well. The building is in apparent need of maintenance, but there is a certain charm to it; and, as the moon elf woman had told you earlier today, it is busy. Dozens of people line the balconies and the outdoor areas in recreation, among them a few dwarves, several elves and halflings, and a half orc (who sits by herself at a table, quietly eating).
If you enter the Inn, you will see the interior structure also betrays the piecemeal construction of the place. The decor is relegated to a room-by-room concept, with no real central theme to it—some rooms are warm and colorful, others are more utilitarian, and all are in some stage of disrepair, with peeling paint and threadbare carpets. Support beams run at odd angles through the various rooms, none of which would be considered a “great room,” but all of which comprise a common area, of sorts. Each room has its own bar, and the bars all connect at a central hub in the building where there is a huge wood furnace.
The majority of the clientele are humans or half elves, and several human staff are tending to the needs of all within and without. The kitchen is obviously busy, churning out food and drinks at an impressive scale.
"So any idea who we're supposed to be meeting?" Ink asks Rip.
Ink starts looking around for individuals who are not active revelers of the party, whether individuals or small groups, but are simply there, perhaps waiting for something or someone.
If Quill is capable, Ink asks her to do the same, as she soars above - a great, dark and feathered raptor, still with a hint of brimstone wafting off her wings.
The general atmosphere is lively, but there are more than a few individuals who seem to be keeping to themselves, including a female dwarf, a male tiefling, and a few humans, one of which is sitting in the corner of a smaller room, wearing a long brown coat, and continuously by looking over his shoulder.
You are aware that you weren’t given a description of the individual which you were supposed to meet, so Rip’s suggestion sounds reasonable.
