Backstory- (Marine Background) Came up as a soldier in (insert major city/faction army), cut his teeth and worked his way up the ranks before becoming disillusioned with the general rank and file. Found the military to be just the strong-arm of a select group of politicians and was becoming a bloated, confused and some times malicious entity instead of the well oiled and lean machine Jack knew it could be. He moved into law enforcement; transferable skills with a more focused output. Here he could do some good.
Again he worked his way up, all the way to detective. He became good at solving cases, solving peoples problems and made a bit of a name for himself locally as someone people could depend on if they needed help. While working cases Jack began noticing a pattern. As he dug deeper he began to uncover a growing web, facilitated by what seemed to be his old comrades in arms, and organized by members of the political heads that were supposed to prevent such corruption in the first place. Jack began to slowly and discreetly collect evidence to expose this network. He spent years of his own free time building a case that would knock those members of society down and show them real justice, until eventually, his work drew this networks attention. An informant of Jacks passed him a warning giving him just enough time to avoid being killed outright, but he had no where to go. He knew better than anyone the lengths that this cabal could go, and how far they could reach. While doing his best to remain hidden, he heard talk of a flar flung continent, Alycron, and that there were ships leaving for it soon. He smuggled himself on board one of these ships, and weeks later, found himself in the hub town of Trishdale. He hopes being this far away from home, he will be able to blend in and disappear, lay low, and return when fewer eyes are watching.
Flaw (sort of) - Has a soft spot for kids. Always intended to/assumed he would start a family but kept putting it on the back burner assuming it was something he would get to eventually. Now he isn't sure he ever will, and not doing so earlier in his life is one of his biggest regrets.
He loves a puzzle. The harder the better. He will become wholly absorbed into it once it gets his claws in him, and will run it down with obsessive determination.
Please let me know if I missed anything, also my backstory is totally flexible and fluid.
(I like the backstory, and how you organized your inventory. Welcome to the game! Please keep in mind that there is an adventure going on in the Town Thread right now, so Town is actually quite empty of players for now. But the adventures should wrap up soon and you can join and adventure.)

Backstory - A mad scientist, Dr. Victor Frickenstein, built a living creature, "The Monstrosity," out of dead body parts. “The Monstrosity” mostly resembles a Goliath. Frickenstein was disgusted by him, and abandoned him to live alone. "The Monstrosity" is remarkably intelligent considering his circumstances, but is still childish as he is only a few years old. He longs to find purpose in life, which led him to a mountain monastery, where he sought to become a monk.
"The Monstrosity" came to Trishdale to learn and study social interaction. He fears forever being alone and is haunted by being an artificial life form. He doubts he has a soul, yet he cares for others, particularly the innocent. Unfortunately, he hasn't quite learned know how to interact with others yet.
(A very interesting character concept. I'm not sure how it will work out- how do you think your character will convince others to form a party with him? Nonetheless, it all looks good to me. Welcome to the game!)

Thanks—I may have borrowed material from a famous novel...!
Um I’m not sure? I think he’d just jump in after hopefully overhearing a party being formed & offer his abilities to the party.
Maybe I missed something in my understanding of how the game works (I’ve done pbp before, but not West Marches). I can change something in the backstory if needed!
I don’t know if it’s too late to add this or if it’s even relevant, but I think this character would always have it on his mind to be looking for his creator. He’d have many words with Frickenstein.
Last thing, it looks like a battle is going on, do I just jump in & go to the tavern?
Basic premise with West marches is that the players form the party, and let the DM know what they want to go investigate. It's intended for short sessions, with lots of party turn over. In a RL campaign, it allows for a pool of players with varying availability to still play in a long term campaign without needing to commit to a set, regular schedule.

Hi! This looks fun, I am requesting to join with the following character (I took some liberties creating his god and faction, if I need to change anything please let me know):
Klark grew up in a small fishing village, with many brothers and sisters. His childhood was fun and peaceful, until the Night Things attacked. He hid in a cupboard while the creatures dragged his family and neighbors into the darkness.
He was found the next day by a party of Night Watchers, a religious order dedicated to the Night Warden. Tasked with protecting civilization from the terrors in the dark, they were too little, too late to save Klark's village. But, with no one of his own left, they took the boy in.
Klark's personal tragedy left him angry, spoiling for a fight. But the Night Watchers were patient, thorough instructors. Through the years he lived and trained with them, he learned to suppress his hatred. It still simmers, just below the surface, but the young Watcher knows he must keep a cool head. If his emotions get the better of him, he could become no better than the things he hunts.
Now, with his years of training complete, the cleric of the Night Warden has decided to take the trip to the New World. Reports from the first explorers are unsettling, and Klark knows the settlers could use the protection of a Night Watcher to help the fledgling town flourish.
(Apologies for any weird spelling and grammar errors, I typed this up on my phone and some of the auto corrects sneak past me.)

The Church of Trishdale is a church of many gods, as long as they seek to fight against evil. I have no problem with adding your god to the pantheon, though seeing how twilight gods revels in stepping close to darkness themselves, other clerics may treat you with unease
Trishdale actually isn't that young, and it's been around for up to fourty years. Still, it's very possible other places are just receiving news about the town, so your backstory works out

(Thank you! I figured Twilight fit the haunted theme of the game, I made a custom flaw as well, I hope that isn't too much of an issue. I did it to give DMs narrative fodder to use against me lol. I will also look at tweaking the back story to take to account the town's age.)
Alignment - Lawful Neutral (Spirits are Chaotic Evil)
Equipment - Two Hand-Axes, One Great-Axe, and Leather Armor
Backstory -
Sulskan's mother was cursed by a Dao while she was pregnant leading Sulskan to be born under an unlucky star. Terrified of the omens surrounding his birth, his mother left him for dead in the wilderness. Somehow, the wilderness took pity on the young Sulskan and a small group of nature spirits took him in and raised him. Growing up in the wilderness was never a bad thing for Sulskan, but eventually, he grew bored and wished to see the world. From this desire, Sulskan convinced the nature spirits that had taken him in, to accompany him to the nearest town, Trishdale. Unfortunately, it was there that Sulskan's curse began to manifest. Sulskan realized in horror that the nature spirits that were all too familiar for him were undetectable by other creatures. As he left the wilderness for the comforts of a town, albeit one as enigmatic as Trishdale, the spirits also began to shift in personality. Eventually, the spirits became evil. Constantly pestering the poor genasi, they whittled down his core until he eventually tried to lash out at them. His attack passed straight through them and their cackle of laughter was the last thing that Sulskan heard before his mind broke. A shattered individual, Sulskan is now in a constant state of flux between his controlled but tortured personality and the crazy, broken, and utterly terrifying personality of the wilderness spirits that have spent too long away from their home. In a brief moment of sanity, Sulskan has managed to convince the nature spirits that power is a good thing and should be sought after. With this end in mind, both sides of Sulskan decided to take up adventuring. The broken side to gain power, and the sane side to find a way to eliminate the other.
I really like the character concept! I'm interested to see how you roleplay this mental duality this character has. I've added you to our Private OOC Chat. Please read the first post to learn how to begin playing.
