Your assistance would be greatly welcomed Nibor.Merry beams at him, before grabbing his hand and prancing off in the direction of the shops, I do so enjoy shopping!
Despite his size Nibor manages to keep up with Merry (albeit with a slight wheeze), used to keeping his own company he finds himself excited in this strange place with such wonderfully interesting companions.
Master Coal, just like this one indeed! You must have been the chap the shopkeeper mentioned when I was enquiring on these back in Red Larch! What a twist of fate, oho this is quite something indeed!
Forgive me my dear Merry, just a minute...
He delicately lifts the book from Coal and turns off the main thoroughfare, finding a space less crowded he plonks himself down on the ground and inspects the book. Remembering his misfires with Guiding Bolt earlier he mumbles a few words first, casting Guidance on himself, just in case...
Nibor's eyes light up as he reads the preface to the tome and realises it is indeed one of the books that had piqued his interest so. It is the second in a set of tomes you feel would be of great significance to the great Dwarven houses of Mirabar.
You all spend some time looking around for the town. Your varied group turns many heads; this tends to be a local place, for local people. A few of the braver children poke at Nibor's shell before running off.
A few of the stall owners seem to be more used to dealing with travellers and tell you of the goings on. Some of it is nonsense, like the "Womford Bat". Locals lock and bar their doors and shutter their windows at night, for fear of a nocturnal predator that snatches folk it can catch outside after dark.
Asking about the books sees you pointed towards the dock, with one stall keeper looking at Coal and saying with a scowl "it's one o' his you're after"
Laughing at the boldness of the children Nibor casts Thaumaturgy to make the ground tremble harmlessly behind them as they scarper off
This bat does indeed sound interesting, not a tale I've heard but one I'd be curious to know more about!
Nibor glances back at the stall keeper, wary of his choice of words and demeanour towards Coal
Ahh, Merry apologies but perchance we can put the shopping on hold for just a short while? What say everyone, shall we check the docks out or dig into this mysterious bat story? We should probably consider lodging as well if we'll be hereabouts for a while!
Rollo looks to Nibor and says he’ll go investigate the “bat” to se if there is any such thing. He wonders off through the crowds to speak to all he can about it. He also looks around for any clues to see if the beast exists and to try and track it
Don’t worry about the book seller friend Nibor, I am used to such descriptions. I would say the person distributing these books is most likely a fire genasi like myself. If so they should stand out
Rollo finds the people of the small town all too ready to talk about "the bat". It is clearly a matter of fear for them.
"Why young Darreth vanished only steps from his own front door a tenday ago. Awful, just awful."
"Big as a man they say. And gaunt and sinewy. And it don't sound like an ordinary bat. Much more snarling. Ain't seen it meself but I swear I heard it not two nights ago"
Investigating the area Darreth's house turns up little, even for Rollo's keen senses. Half the town has clearly been trampling through the area and from the patterns of the dust in the house it looks like some of his possessions were 'investigated' too.
Rollo finds a scrap of brightly yellow fabric on a nail just at the door. The neighbour doesn't recognise it.
You meet back up and head for the dock, which currently has three boats moored.
Two of the three keelboats are crewed by ordinary river sailors. The third belongs to a gang lead by a water genasi (the shopkeeper has lumped all genasi in together, despite their vastly different looks), his halfling servant and two rough looking sorts who seem to be sucking up to the genasi.
Oh is that a water Genasi! How wonderful I've never had the pleasure. I wonder if those folks in discourse are with him or merely enquiring on his goods also...Maybe we approach and see what we can learn first, information is power and all that!
Merry nods and walks over to the genasi, smiling in greeting, Hello there, we heard you might be the ones to enquire with regarding some dwarven tomes?
The genasi pushes aside one of his simpering lackies and sizes you all up in an instant. He leans back on the cargo box he's sitting on and addresses Merry.
Hello poppet. Lovely weather we're having, but not as lovely as having you I'd say. I don't know anything about any Dwarven history books but I'm sure your dear Shoalar could teach you a few things.
He laughs and shoves one of his lackies playfully.
Merry seems confused by what he’s implying, but shakes her head innocently, ...well I don’t suppose you know anything about a missing caravan in these parts?

Coal follows along behind. Nibor you said dwarven tomes. Do you mean like this one? He hands over the time he acquired back in Red Larch

I wonder how long they’ve been suffering from the Womford bat? Is there any truth to the stories I wonder

That looks like our gang. How do we want to play this?

The only caravan I'm missing is the one you're pulling. Woof! Hahaha!!
Now, are you going to spend time with me or spend money?
