Joel sees the others standing at the door trying to work out how to push it open, and reaches past and grasps one of the handles and pulls firmly, "Hopefully this leads out of this mist."
Stepping back a couple feet, carefully avoiding the pressure plate once more, staying hidden at a good vantage point where he can see the illumination from Joel’s shield. As he reaches to pull the door open, Syvis nocks an arrow, keeping an keen eye, ready to fire if something hostile comes through the other side of the door.
Arrow knocked, Syvis watches as Joel pulls on one of the curved ring handles and the door grinds slowly open, letting a quick rush of humid stale air through to greet you. Beyond the door is a room constructed of large stone blocks, buttressed in the corners. The walls are wet and slimy, and mud covers most of the floor in a thin coating. To the east and west may be seen stone doors recessed in the wall, and to the north a set of stairs leads down.
In the center of the chamber sits a large polished boulder amid a pile of smaller rounded rocks. The boulder is five feet tall and colored brown with dark streaks and spots. Leaning against it is what appears to be a bamboo staff. In the mud around the base of the boulder is a moving shape, looking like a crayfish. It is facing you and seems to be aware of your presence.
Intently watching the heavy door of the ancient shrine being pulled open, Syvis expects to see some sort of danger rushing out from the other side. He’s greeted by a sight of a much larger and empty room, with a moist, putrid smelling.
Syvis looks down and immediately catches sight of swimming shapes beneath the floor, like something alive is under the mud, but doesn’t seem hostile immediately. Syvis slowly puts down his bow, grabbing the 10-feet-long pole again, keeping a distance and poking at the moving shape vigilantly.
Joel steps into the room, and quickly off to one side to allow the others to follow or fire in, and peers at the creature to try and work out what it is.

"I don't think this to be any kind of beast." Neff says making his way into the room and advancing only a few steps from the rest keeping his posture and body language as non threatening as possible. He puts his right hand behind his back, summoning an ethereal dagger that looks like it is made out of the night sky. Neff flips it to where the blade lays flat with his for arm and the hilt forward in his fist and then brings it around. "Linguae Intellectum" Neff whispers causing a faint dim light to glow in the hilt of his dagger, Casting \Tongues on himself.
"We come in peace. We fell into this place and are looking for a way out. Can you help us? My name is Neff, what is yours?" Neff says to the being in the room.

"It's all mud," Esilia says as she walks past the doors, "now I'm definitely not going to stay clean!" It's evident from her speech that she did hope to be clean, as much as possible. It seems like this matter is something that concerns her more than it does most people who take up adventuring. She raises her skirt slightly so it doesn't touch the mud and is clearly not happy with the situation. "Can we move on? I really don't like my clothes getting all muddy. I think that we should go left. Forward seems to go down, so it's probably not leading out of here. Then, of right and left, I prefer left."
As she comes through to join them, Joel will pat a friendly hand on Esilia's back, "You can always get clean again, but not everyone gets to explore ancient ruins and search for lost knowledge. Besides, just imagine how good it'll feel to finally get cleaned up afterwards. The warmth of a hot bath seeping into your bones, the pleasantly clean smell of soap. Let those thoughts sustain you while we trudge along in the mud." He'll then move off to circle the creature to examine the far door, wondering if perhaps the mist actually rises and the air would be cleaner down the ramp.
(Could we get a comparative size? I'm thinking a crayfish is maybe 6 inches long, so a big one could be a foot or two maybe. Or are you using large as in creature size large so its eight to ten feet big?)
"I should have taken cleaning-magic classes when I had the chance." She says to herself as she moves closer to see what everyone's gathered around, still holding her skirt above the mud with one hand. She knows Joel is right but this room doesn't seem to be very interesting. Animals never interested her much. She preferred tombs or ancient ruins - stuff made of stone most of the time. If it had to be a living thing, humanoid creatures were preferrable. At least there her magic was more useful, as dealing with people was what she planned to do before she ventured into her first ruins. Esilia picks up the staff, trying to identify whether it just a bamboo staff or perhaps something more. Does it have any markings that will indicate its purpose?
The crayfish that is now gesturing at you is quite large, taller than a human. As Esilia approaches the center of the room, the crayfish moves threateningly closer to her, its gesturing becoming more frantic and its stream of babble becoming more intent. It is about 7' away from Esilia now and it doesn't look happy. As Syvis casts speak with animals and Neff casts tongues, the strange words come into focus for them.
Neff hears the following:
"I said, you had better go, or I will have to discharge my sacred duty! Be off with you before I lose my temper! Be away with you at once!"
The creature seams to stop upon hearing Syvis's voice, which is that of a crayfish. It then changes its own sound to be that of a language composed of clicks and snaps. Syvis hears:
"Know the way out? First you have to back away and stop threatening us. You cannot come forward. Tell her to back away and then we'll talk."
As she sees the (turns out that it's actually large) creature moving towards her, Esilia backs away with a miserable look on her face. "Mud and mad beasts, can't even get close to the only two things interesting in the whole room." As her tail coils around her right leg. Esilia keeps walking until she's ~20 ft. away from the animal, behind the party. "You'd think a Tiefling could manage with animals, considering we both have tails," she says to herself, "but in reality, they're often worse than people. At least I have you, Shpeeny."She looks at the small spider and very gently pets it while waiting for the rest of the party to concede their business, whatever it is they're doing, visibly uncomfortable in this room.
As Esilia backs her way towards the entrance, she observes the footing in the mud is a bit precarious. Almost having her feet swing out from in front of her, she concludes sudden motions might result in an unintentional roll in the mud.
Syvis sees the enormous crayfish form burrowing out of the mud and begin to swing its fish claws furiously. “Okay, wow,” Syvis raises his hands in front of his chest in a defensive posture, he stands up, instinctively backing away a couple steps, calming the fish down. He signals others to back away as well, sighs and wipes the non-existent sweat with the back of his hand. “Gee, crayfish makes worst kind of mermaid, am I right?”
Syvis turns to the giant crayfish again, speaking in fish sounds with slick and moist syllables, “we would love to leave you alone, really. Expect the way we just came through?” He points to the door behind him with his thumb, shrugs, “it was a dead end. No way out. This is the only way to go, unfortunately. If you could tell us the way out, we’ll out of your hair in seconds. I promise.”
Joel pauses as his friends seem to be able to speak to this strange shellfish creature and moves to put his back to the wall, but continues to slowly circle the room, trying to see if he can get past the creature without upsetting it, "For those of us who don't speak fish, what's it want?"
"It sounds like," Syvis raises his voice yelling across the room, relaying the information to others, "if we stay away and be nice, it will tell us the way out of here." He finishes, and gives the most warming smile he has to the giant clayfish.
