Captain Mist, eh? Varlan shakes his head in amusement
With the current threat defeated, Jecob walks up to Varlan and asks for clarification.
"When I signed on your vessel, I was told that Mist was leading your company. Are you saying that was in jest, or some kind of inside joke? Who is the captain, who has the most authority on the ship?"

"Ser Mist?" Varlan stares a moment at the wounded halfling and his brow furrows with concern. Needs a rest, that one, looks like one lucky blow will fell him.
He tilts his head slightly to one side, considering the question more fully, then turns back to Jecob. "I think of him as an expedition leader." He nods to himself, then smiles at some private joke before continuing, "The ship was commissioned by him, he chooses where it goes, but does not command it."
"Such arrangements are not uncommon; even merchant princes answer to their captains when at sea; those are just the rules of the sea. Our captain was, alas, lost with the ship. Although...if our host is not lying...the ship may not have been lost and the captain may yet live."
Satisfied that he had answered the question, Varlan turns to Mist. "You look ready to drop. I have a little healing, but a rest may suit us better. We should seek a safe place soon, I think."
"Should the need arise, I can provide such a place, but only for an hour."
"Eh..." Mist wheezes as he tries to straighten himself fully upright from his slouched exhaustion. "Our Mis'tuv's been better but this is nothing a good night's sleep won't fix. But no, let's press on. I don't fancy stayin' in the belly o' this beast a moment longer than needed."
*Cough*
Freb begins to carry him forward slowly and he muses, "'Cap'n Mist'... I like the sound o' that. Maybe I'll get one o' them fancy hats... I'd like ya all t' refer to me as such from here forth!" He giggles. "'Cap'n' Mist... I love it!"

(Aha... I thought it was something he mumbled under his breath, along with the visible head shake reaction. I'll keep that in mind for the future.)

Varlan raises his eyebrows, a faint smile on his lips. "As I was saying to Jecob, the Captain may yet live. But -- were he dead -- the command of the ship and crew would fall to one of the other officers. There being no ship, and only a few crew renders this question moot." He bows slightly to Mist, essaying an unconvincing look of great sadness, "So I fear that your promotion may need to wait until you obtain your own vessel and a crew to sail in it."
After a moment he shrugs, looking around at their dreadful surroundings, "That being said, we do need to work together, and a leaderless force is no force at all. So...If you wish to be the leader of our small marooned band, then so long as you listen and make sense I will gladly follow. My contract of service was up for renewal, and I had planned to hand in my notice to the captain anyway and seek my own fortune in these strange lands. Now is as good a time as any."
"Tosh!" Mist giggles again. "Never needed actual credentials t' make it this far in life. Not about to start seekin' 'em out now!"
He thumps his chest with a thumb and the outline of a silver star appears on his tunic. A crude semblance of a sheriff's badge. His expression shifts to one of mock determination with a grin still hinting at the corners of his mouth.
In a put-on gruff voice he grumbles, "Cap'n says 'Move out'..."
Vlar looks up in the middle of his ritual casting, amused by the antics of the group he is with, but he continues to perform his ritual, wishing to know if any different magics are in play in this area.
We move down the winding hall, as we are moving you can feel the movement of the undead beast, and the tunnel contracts at different times.
You arrive in strangely shaped room that used to serve as some sort of organ before it petrified long ago. Now that the creature it belonged to is undead, this room secretes a variety of strange fluids.
The walls of the room are slick with various colored fluids, and it smells like a bowl of exotic fruit that has started to rot.
The shape of the room is odd and hard to explain, but it's long and narrow, with 3 chambers, and a 4th chamber that is also an exit, but there is an actual door to go through, except the door is made of flesh.
I'd saying that detect magic would still be up and you would see that the fluidsfrom each chamber would be glowing.
Chamber A would show Abjuration. Chamber B is Conjuration. Chamber C show both Necrotic and Evocation. Chamber D shows Evocation and Abjuration.
Kraven looks around the strange room and starts to move toward the door to detect for traps, stops and with a shudder looks around the room again, then shrugs his shoulders and looks back to the group. "Mist, might be more your area of knowledge than mine."
Kuatho watches the play of strange behavior among his shipmates, antennae twitching, cocking his head back and forth. When the silver star is conjured on Mist’s chest, he pays special attention and tilts his head, moves forward, and pokes the star with a chitinous appendage, fascinated by it. He stands up straight and when Mist says to “Move out” he acts like he has been given marching orders, straightening up and grabbing his spear, turning and moving forward. Speaking lowly to himself, he says “These beings are so curious. Why does there always have to be a leader, why don’t they just act as one gelob?” When he reaches the new odd room, he pauses and looks, waiting for someone who may have more knowledge about this….

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Varlan looks at the insect's mid-section and shrugs. "Some people call it a pissing contest. Others, the chain of command. it is an age-old tradition that has served us for as long as we remember."
As he comes up to the room he turns to wait for Vlar's description, then examines the room closely fro the doorway.
@DM: How far away is the door and, if closed, is there a door handle that can be seen from the entrance?
Jecob: “I hope this isn’t a stomach. That might turn unpleasant. With 4 chambers, it might be a heart, but the shape is off.”
