"Yes, let's. Stupid hall takes too long to walk anyway, I wouldn't want to walk it all back again." Varn lays his hand on the handle but waits in case Komos has a reason he wanted to skip the door. If not, he will try to open the door, if it isn't locked, and if it is, will step aside to alow Komos to work his magic on the lock.
While Komos examines the map, as soon as Varn touches the door handle, the party hears the sound of footsteps again. This time it sounds like something is running straight at them in full sprint from the direction of the room they came from. However when they turn to face the chaser, the footsteps instantly stop and there is nothing there again.
The door actually opens this time and beyond is a large dimly lit room that seems to stretch on forever. The party can't even see the end of it. Stacked in huge, cubic stacks are large wooden crates that tower to the ceiling which is 20ft tall. The room has to be 300ft from left wall to right wall and probably even more than that from the door Varn just opened to whatever lies on the other side of the room. Past 150ft, the room just seems to disappear in darkness. On the ceilings are strange lighting fixtures that bathe the room in an unnatural yellow light. The lights flicker, at random intervals, the room is plunged into darkness for barely a second before the lights come back on. Sometimes the lights go off and on a couple of times in quick succession. The party can hear dripping water coming from the shadowy part of the room.
Komos notices that according to the map, the door was supposed to lead to a much smaller room than what they see before them.
He can't. The crates are stacked on top of each other. He can only peer at the top one (because the other ones have crates on top of them) and the top one is like 10-15ft high.
Skarro looks at the stacks, trying to assess if he could climb them -- either if some stacks are shorter than others, or if they are uneven in the stacking.
Strangely, the crate stacking is perfectly even and there are no stacks that are shorter. Stacking something THIS perfectly even should not be humanly possible.
"Maybe I can burn them," Varn suggests as if that's the logical course of action. "If these are coins, I don't think the flames should be a problem." Because naturally, coins are always stacked in huge crates in huge rooms like this. "Otherwise... It might take too long to search them all."
Skarro frowns, "Knock some down first," he says. "But Skarro will climb if he can."
Nodding in thanks to Komos he examines the pile of boxes then pulls some pitons, a grappling hook, a hammer and some rope from his pack, hoping to make the ascent a little easier.
Skarro tries to wedge a piton underneath or between boxes as he goes, and loop a rope. If possible he also gets a leg up from Komos at the start. "Skarro not a natural climber," he mutters as he tries to ascend.
Athletics: 12 (rolled with advantage, but first was a 12)
Skarro manages to climb up to the top of the 15ft stack of boxes. When he gets to the top, he sees that the wooden crates are nailed shut. Even from up here, unless he opens up a crate with a crowbar, or breaks them open, he isn't going to be able to tell what's inside it.
Skarro tries to open a box using the sharp end of his grappling hook, and if that fails he tries a dagger or his old longsword. If all else fails, he calls down, "Any of you got a crowbar?", and will use the rope to pull it up.
Just some clarification, how does Skarro try to open the box while he's on top of it? Does he like try to open up one of the sides of the Box? Which side?
Skarro pauses, "Not check this door?" he glances from Komos to Varn, and finally to Glory. "More coins, good, yes?"

“Ah right right. We should definitely check here too, and compare it with the map as well.” Komos adds

Skarro walks over to the nearest crate and peers inside.

"I'll help you climb," Komos says, thinking back to the fabled 3 kobolds in a jacket, he figured with some help they could get some height.

The boxes are hard and really tall. Skarro, needs an Athletics check to climb up the box.

Could he lower himself down a little, then push the top box to one side to give himself a small ledge to work from?
Uhh... The Top box (or any of the boxes) are really big and heavy so... Roll STR because Adventurers are extraordinary.
Strength: 17
While Skarro does give a good effort, he fails to shove the crate a bit like he wanted.Skarro does manage to push the box to one side to create a small space where can stand.
(I forgot that I asked for STR, not Athletics. The DC for a hard task for straight checks with stats without skill is lower than skill checks.
