A dragonborn player used his breath weapon against a creature. The weapon is DC 8 + CON mod + prof bonus. I used the player's CON mod, which was 2, plus prof. of 2 to get 12. The creature succeeded on the save. Damage was 8 but was halved to 4 due to success on the save. Did I do this right? Was the player supposed to make an attack roll or is the DC the only thing to consider? Thank you.

Yup, you did it right. For that, much like most things, it’s either an attack or a saving throw, very few things require both. If it doesn’t expressly call for an attack roll, then none is required.

Nope, no attack roll, you did it 100% correctly.
