Ok so I do not understand something about sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth lv spell slots. Do make casters get these back or is it a one time use deal?
Spell slots honestly don't make sense. It would make a lot more sense if you have x amount of mana, and a spell costs x amount to cast. Then you take a hit to your overall mana pool. Any and all mana slowly replenishes it's self when you are not casting spells. And depending on what race you are depends on how much mana you have. example: The high elf race could start with 150 mp (because their race is more magically inclined) then the tabxi race whom are not magically inclined have 75 mana in their mana pool. And they gain mp as they take on magic user levels let's say 5 - 10 points of mp per every two levels of magic user class levels or every one. Full casters get ten let's say, half castors get 5, and third gets two. And instead of having spell slots if you add more mana in a spell the more powerful the spells effects are. Maybe let's say if you don't cast any spells for 1 hr you get back 10 - 15 points of mana and eating let's you get another 10 points and if your body is resting (sleeping, meditating, or trance state for elves) your body gets back another 10 - 15 mp back so if your character ears a meal, sleeps, wakes and eats a large portion of you mana is restored or mostly restored. And your mana regeneration can go up to for let's say every other level of a magic user. So a level 4 wizard would gain about 40 ish mph and the rate of how much goes up from 10-15 mp per hr to 20-25 mp per hr.
Spell slots are like batteries. To use a certain spell you have to have the same sized battery.
Now if you want mo powa, stick a bigger battery into that spell, and hope it doesn’t blow up in your face.
So say you want to cast a first level spell, you need a first level spell slot battery, no batteries at all and your in it deep, bigger batteries available, spell tells you what happens if you juice it up.
Now you only get so many batteries per day use, and some features allow recharging at different times, but as you grow in level, so does the number and different battery levels you gain.
Now as for other ways to represent how magic usage is handled, thats too much mathing.

Spellcasters regain all expended spell slots whenever they finish a long rest. That is explained under the Spellcasting feature for each spellcasting class.

There is an optional rule in the DMG for using “Spell Points” instead of spell slots. You might want to look that over: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/dmg/dungeon-masters-workshop#ModifyingaClass).
