Hello. I recently watched some clips of the D&D YouTube series "Legends of Avantris," and one of the things that happened gave me an idea for my next character. In the clip, one of the characters named Gideon was haunted by a clown he killed named Chuckles, who was telling him about how when a clown dies, their clown powers become even greater as they become one with "The Honk Legion." I found this hilarious, and now want to make a character that is like a clown "priest" of the Honk Legion, but don't really know how. I thought of doing a Trickery Cleric, but I don't know if there is a better class, or what lineage to use. Thank you for any help.
Trickery cleric's the most obvious, but in terms of subclass features, I think a reskinned Archfey warlock could work very well too. Charming or frightening a group once per rest fits a clown, Misty Escape is a fun chaos feature, etc. That would also give you the option for something like Pact of the Chain and a "monkey" familiar or some other clown-appropriate buddy
Cleric also has some fun synergies with a familiar in a multiclass (or other way to get one), since you can cast touch spells -- healing or otherwise -- through it
Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
Breathe, dragons; sing of the First World, forged out of chaos and painted with beauty. Sing of Bahamut, the Platinum, molding the shape of the mountains and rivers; Sing too of Chromatic Tiamat, painting all over the infinite canvas. Partnered, they woke in the darkness; partnered, they labored in acts of creation.
I'll second warlock as a good fit for this. You'll want high charisma anyway and warlock leans into the creepy/scary stuff you might want to do with a clown. My first thought would be to reflavor The Undead - Form of Dread would be a lot of fun. Archfey is a good pick too.
Trickery is good though if you like cleric. Ultimately this will hinge more on your roleplay and action descriptions than your class mechanics.
In my humble opinion a Paladin could also kinda work.
Make him an Oath of Conquest Paladin. His powers are gathered from all the Clowns that have died and his mission is to spread the believe of the "Honk Legion".
His background could be a Gladiator, because in my opinion the Disguise Kit and Proficiencies in Acrobatics and Performance would work really well for an Entertaining Clown Paladin.

I was thinking monk, and reskin the monk's movement and avoid opportunity attack features as the clown "getting lucky" while "acting stupid." (Flurry of blows would also play well with this.) Xanther's has a subclass called way of the drunken master that would work perfect with what I'm thinking, but even if you don't have Xanther's the idea should be playable without it.
(The advantage of monk, or maybe barbarian, over warlock is that you can move around the battlefield being "annoying" whereas a warlock is a caster who has to stay safe. If you used a paladin as suggested by Gojutheboy you'd reskin the weapon, and have it act like a buzzer when you hit someone with a strike spell.)

Greetings,
I hope you are not a Bot given that this is your first post on D&D Beyond, and you joined today.
As far as Backgrounds go, you could go for an Entertainer, as it fits what a Clown is.
This will give you a Disguise Kit, a Musical Insturment of your choice, and boosts the Acrobatics (DEX) & Performance (CHA) Skills.
Hope this helps!

My homebrew subclasses (full list here)
(Artificer) Swordmage | Glasswright | (Barbarian) Path of the Savage Embrace
(Bard) College of Dance | (Fighter) Warlord | Cannoneer
(Monk) Way of the Elements | (Ranger) Blade Dancer
(Rogue) DaggerMaster | Inquisitor | (Sorcerer) Riftwalker | Spellfist
(Warlock) The Swarm
Cleric with trickery Domain is just a solid Pick.
