Odds are I'll continue with my hybrid of house rules and the playtest material I like. I'll wait and see if I buy the books. Some of the art makes me feel like they are leaning more into MtG Fantasy Superheroes than traditional fantasy gaming. I already tone things down in 5E, so I'm not inclined to buy something that goes even farther into power creep.

100% agree.
With every single change all it is is power creep.
They need to make a Superheros edition, an Anime edition, a space scify edition the psionics fans could push to have psionics instead of magic in those.
And then try to get D&D back to middle ages fantasy gaming. Bring back the gods and their meddling in their followers lives. Give us real write ups for the history of the races and their gods. That is a supplement that people would buy.
If your worried about stepping on the toes of other culture let those other cultures do those supplements. If in the end they chose to not do it that is their loss. World wide their are enough people and players to do it.
And as for adding third party content to this sight. Do not like it. I like some of the content yes. But is all the third party content they place here now cannon and official? Is it RAW?
The moment they changed spiritual weapon to have concentration was the moment I was like, "Nope this isn't for me."! Add in the whole "Race" to "Species"? Yeah no want!
I like how the last 2 posts is one person complaining about power creep and the next complaining about adding concentration to spiritual weapon.
Most people haven't playtested it, they are currently just giving their feelings, which is fair, since the game isnt out yet, and only certain types of people have been running all the rules together to test it.
If you aren't interested in an update because 1 spell is concentration, and a naming change.. , shrugs... Suffice to say that person probably was not going to be interested no matter what.
It'll be JUST different enough to sell more books again. Thats the real goal.
So focused on making everything as mindnumbingly simple with zero choices so that "the new person who cannot be bothered to read their character sheet" can play. The thing is, most players are not the new person who never reads anything, and most of us play beyond level 5.
I can't disagree more. I've already got some character concepts that aren't possible now, that I will be able to try moving forward. Do I think all the changes are good? No, I don't. There are some I very much dislike. However, the average, the sum of the parts, looks to be a general improvement that's probably worth the things that they are doing that I do not like.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

I agree with this. though I will likely wait until all the books are out, i really hate the staggered release system .

Agreed with crzyhawk and I'll add there are definitely more choices now. Fixed ASIs are gone, so now you're choosing species based on their flavor and powers rather than focusing on which one gets the +2 to your main stat. Everyone gets a feat in their background even in a featless game. Martials have Weapon Mastery, Rogues have Cunning Strike, Barbarians have Brutal Strike, Paladins have a reason to use other smites now etc. More feats are half-feats so you have more avenues to not delay your stat progression by taking one. And so on.

While there are now a few more "goodies", essentially the changes are minimal. For better or worse. In my case, for the worse, to the point that I have 0 interest in the 2024 edition. And well, in 5e in general, which I will not return to unless the 2024 edition really surprises me by fixing the problems of 2014. I understand that there are people who wanted to continue playing the same thing they have been playing for 10 years, and it is a valid position. But I need the problems of the 2014 edition to be solved, and that doesn't seem like it's going to happen. Unless there is a surprise, the 2024 edition will be the same as the 2014 edition with some new "goodies". A disappointment for me. But there is no drama here. I gave my opinion in the suveys, and it was not heard probably because it was not in the majority. So I'll just play a game that gives me what I ask for.
we've seen what they wanted to test but not what they decided to keep. we really don't know much more than a few subclasses included. I'm definitely very interested in seeing what revised looks like. I'll complain if complaint is warranted after I've read it. it's just too bad that they did this ala carte thing recently because I'm not buying digital until that's put back. the paper will probably be available long months before basic srd is updated. I like to use links, not page numbers. shrug.

unhappy at the way in which we lost individual purchases for one-off subclasses, magic items, and monsters?
tell them you don't like features disappeared quietly in the night: providefeedback!
I'm hoping that in the final edition they surprise us and fix the weakest points of 5e. But I'm not deluded. What is in the latest playtests is what will be seen in the published books. I mean, maybe they touch on a thing here and there, maybe they include things that didn't appear in the playtest. But the spirit is what we saw in the last playtest: Few changes and some new goodies. If it weren't like that, what use would the playtest have been? Furthermore, this is what the majority made clear in the playtest: We don't want a new edition, we just want more goodies and a little touch-up here and there. And that is what the 2024 edition will be.
Honestly I am more concerned about their business practices than anything else at the present.

Given they are making writers redundant and seem to be focussed on licensing then actually making good new content I think I might be done with DnD, I am looking into some of the new products being created by other studios for my next campaign, and given my current one has a long way to go probably it might be a while yet.
Daggerheart, the MCDM TTRPG, tales of the valiant (I am hearing mixed reviews) there are a number of alternatives to DnD that I may well shift to for a hight fantasy TTRPG, and then I have always loved Paranoia, Cyberpunk, Call of Cthulu, 7th sea, and deadlands.
I will probably do like I did with 5th edition, wait 5-6 years and see where it is at that point before I buy it. I will use that time to either keep using my 5th edition books, added to by 3rd party publications, or switch systems all together, it has been a long long time since I last tried running a World of Darkness campaign combining Mage, Wearwolf and Vampire all in the same large arc. hmmmm.

Mythcraft is also pretty fun and worth a look if you are exploring other systems. I hear Swords & Wizardry is pretty good too, though I have not played it myself.

I'll wait and see. My early reading of the Vecna stuff still looks pretty compelling (to me anyway) so I haven't given up hope on WotC's creativity just yet. I will be buying the new rule material upon release and review it to see if i want to migrate my campaign right away, or maybe just adopt the rule changes we like best. Either way, there will be a good discussion with my players to figure out what everyone likes and doesn't like. Maybe we'll run a small couple of sessions under the new rules to hash things out before we swap the main campaign.
My group will probably review and wait, at least until all 3 books are out before attempting any switch. And then finish whatever campaign we are in before starting fresh with a new one.

Between limited passes on some items in Playtests and a bunch of things left out of playtest. I will wait.
