My group will be starting a new campaign and have just gone over some character creation rules. My idea going into this was a minotaur battlemaster/bear totem barb. In the past I have usually run casters. We rolled for stats using a 4d6 for primary two stats which we had to call before hand followed by 3d6 for final 4. Now mind you our table is not optimizers but unfortunately the dice were not kind and ended up as Str 10, Con 6, followed by 15,10,9,9.
Further rules include starting at level 3 w/ a free feat. My main concern is down to the low con, which I'm thinking taking tough could potentially help. I have also though of switching subclasses to perhaps echo knight/ancestral guardian to help keeping me out of one on one combat. Any advice long time players could offer would be greatly appreciated
Well, with those stats, a multiclass is barb is out as you’ll need at least a 13 str.
Look at hill dwarf. You get a +2 con and an extra 1 hp/level, that should take some of the sting out of that con score. I’d probably put that 15 in dex, and go archer, battle masters make really good archers. Maybe piercer for the feat if you stay archer, to round out the dex, and give you a bit of a damage boost, or some other half feat that boosts dex.
If you’re really attached to barb multiclass, take a race that boosts str to 12, then after your asi at 4, you could multiclass at level 5. But you really don’t want to be in melee, you’ll just be too fragile.
Something to watch out for, is extra attack does not stack — fighter5/barb 5 still only get 2 attacks. The only way to get 3 is a level 11 fighter.
You might look at wizard or sorcerer or some class that wants to be away from a fight, that 6 con is brutal.
Obviously, the best choice is to beg your DM to let you re-roll, or switch to an array or something. I’m a firm believer in rolling, and in dealing with it if your rolls are crap. But in this case, these rolls are a level of crap that goes beyond normal crap.
What you might consider is going for a ranged battlemaster since many of their better maneuvers work just as well with a longbow as with a longsword. With that 15 in Dex you could multiclass a couple levels into Rogue to pick up Cunning action which will help you not get hit, and Expertise to help offset the otherwise poor skills bonuses you’ll have. And what the heck, an extra 2d6 damage once per turn isn’t the worst thing in the world. Probably Hill Dwarf as Xalthu suggested.
