I am checking out the gem dragon ancestor choices, and where it says damage type, along with the others, it says thunder. I understand what it means by necrotic, for example, and all the rest. But thunder, I don't under stand what it means by that.
Yeah. it's generally 'sound' damage for lack of a better word. Hence why the Silence spell makes creatures inside of it immune to thunder damage.
Thunderous Smite makes a loud thunder like sound that's harmful. Booming Blade does something similar but without specifying a radius to hear the sound. I could also see something like a monsterous screech so loud it hurts and makes your ears bleed being thunder damage etc.
In reality, 'pressure waves' do most of the damage in most explosions. Basically, that is what thunder is. If you ever watched Mythbusters, they would often use these metal foil pressure wave detectors.
My high school was the "The Lightning" as our mascot since we lived in the lightning capital of the world. The motto was "Thunders just the noise, Lightning does the work".
"Thunder" is the damage type that was referred to as "sonic" in 3rd Edition. It got changed to "Thunder" in 4th Edition because "sonic" sounded too scientific for a fantasy setting.

Even though it comes from Latin. 🤦♂️
Still not as bad as the people who think that "thunder" damage is electricity on account of Thor being called the god of thunder instead of the god of lightning.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.

Think forceful sound/pressure wave. Many spells do thunder damage as well in the same way.

Thunder/ Sonic damage is real.

Alright, that makes more sense. Sense that is the case, what about the force damage type?
This is just my reasoning, but I imagine it like this:
Thunder damage: Force/Pressure with noise. (BOOM~)
Force damage: Force/Pressure without the noise, like a strong wind for example.
Force is PK power like in Star Wars.

Force is basically kinetic energy without mass. There's nothing in the real world that really can deal force damage.

That makes sense. I like the way you picture it, Gilli.
There is a description of every damage type in the rules.
