So I would like to ask my fellow DM's their thoughts on the warforged Sentry's rest ability.
Sentry’s Rest
When you take a long rest, you must spend at least six hours in an inactive, motionless state, rather than sleeping. In this state, you appear inert, but it doesn’t render you unconscious, and you can see and hear as normal.
So the wording in Sentry's rest makes me think the warforged need to be locked down for 6 hours doing so. As well as they can see and hear as normal. Can they speak while being in the mode? That's seems like a mayor drawback if the whole reason would be a great guard during night.
Can you speak motionlessly? Probably not. The intent seems that you are able to spring to action if you need to but, would lose the benefits of a long rest if you do. You have to start your rest over again.
Speaking is not being motionless or inactive, if it cuts into the minimum of 6 hours needed for the long rest, it is not fine.
The 6 hours does not have to be continuous. They could Sentry’s Rest for 3 hours, speak for an hour, and then Sentry’s Test for another 3 hours and not only be fine, but still have an hour to spare.
Neat but, that doesn't change anything I've said in the least.
Not at all, Well, the one thing it changes is that the PC would not need to start the rest over just for having a conversation. Just listed it for clarification.

I was addressing this misleading comment you made: “you are able to spring to action if you need to but, would lose the benefits of a long rest if you do.”
Thank you, for your thoughts so far on the subject. I'm an foreigner so I might put to much emphasis on the part of " you MUST spend atleast 6 hours in an motionless state." To me it sounds rather final that it has to be 6 hours. Not 3 hours on, 1 hour off, 3hours on. But I might be putting to much in to the wording.
I suggest reading the base rules for long rest as a starting place for interpreting the warforged ability. The warforged inert state is replacing the 6 hours of sleep out of 8 total hours in a long rest, with the advantage of still being alert to function as a sentry. The 6 hours of sleep or inertness during a long rest need not be continuous, they just can’t be interrupted by "strenuous’ activity if you want to gain the benefits of a long rest. The base definition of long rest spells out examples of strenuous and non-strenuous activities in this context; it explicitly allows you to talk without ruining your long rest, assuming the talking doesn’t add up to more than the two hours allowed for not sleeping/going inert.
First of I want to thank you for your two cents. Secondly I've pretty much read PhB and DmG from cover to cover. But the reason I wanted to ask other DM's is because I personally feel like the Sentry's rest ability is worded in such a way that makes me wonder why they spesifically target seeing and hearing but leaves out speech. Another part is the "must" part which to me seems kinda final. But at the same time it makes no sense to not be able to disconnect and leap in to action if something would happen during the sentry period.

6 hours total, but they do not have to be continuous. The same way people sleep in shifts to keep watch.
Long rests have never needed to be continuous. If they did, whoever was on watch for the night would always be exhausted while everyone else would be fresh, and parties who are low-level or without a Wizard or Bard would be utterly screwed unless towns were conveniently only a day's travel away.

I am pretty sure long rest needs to be continuous, and you do not have to spend all of that time sleeping.
In real life, no one who is on watch is on watch for the whole duration, and that is generally not how it works. The watch usually rotates among multiple members to so everyone can get some sleep.
A low level party should not be camping out in the wilderness, as it is simply too dangerous, even if they have spellcasters. Ideally, they are supposed to head back to town and take a long rest in the safety of civilization. First and second level characters are super fragile, and it makes no sense to send them on a difficult quest that requires camping out in the wilderness without significant support, as sending them out there alone into the woods is suicidal, as even a small party of goblins can ambush and wipe them out. Once they reach around level 4 or 5, camping out there alone is fine, but they should not do so before then without extra NPC allies or some other form of support.
The way some of you are interpreting this, the only beneficiaries of a long rest would be the pc taking the first 2 hour watch, and the PC taking the last one. Sleep has to be able to be interrupted for the second and third watches, otherwise a full party long rest would take 12 hours (4 hours that don’t count, 2 hour third watch, 6 hours for the third watch pc to sleep)
See, you get it. The Warforged would be the one to take one of the dreaded middle watch spots. But the question becomes whether he could still keep A limited watch while he is inert.
Can you speak motionlessly? Probably not. The intent seems that you are able to spring to action if you need to but, would lose the benefits of a long rest if you do. You have to start your rest over again.
I would say warforged probably have some magical voice box, heck, it might not even be in their mouth.

Speech is left out because the Warforged is still intended to be treated as Inert. Other than being stationary, the Warforged is functionally awake. But if they were also able to speak comfortably during their Rest then they would functionally be up and awake all night long and able to casually converse with their allies if anyone else is staying up in the night.
I made this for my player, leaning into the robot side more than anything. The idea is to be simple, with room for you as the DM to keep the player from going buck wild and not needing too long rest. You can ignore it or use it and personalize this to your heart's content. Take a long rest with the rest of the party, and none of these effects will hit you. But unlike the fleshy people with you, you can last longer on the road. You can fight more battles without a break. Now, do not be mean to your player. Use these as guidelines to keep you and the player from arguing about the wording of the sleep stuff around Warforged. Just an idea: if you do not like what I made, talk with your player and find some common ground. My player agreed we need a ruling. Here is what I got.
Note if the player dies in combat and gets hit with revivify, do not give them 4 levels of exhaustion unless they do this a bunch of times for a sessions in a row. The intention here is to keep the player from just going non-stop and making the other players feel slow for not being robots.
I am aware of the age of this thread, but I figured if you are like me, looking for advice, here's something that can help in the decision-making process.
Sleep rules are weird and a little unclear for Warforged. So, what I am going to do is have you continue being active for a long period of time, but every so often, you will gain a point of exhaustion, representing mechanical wear and tear. What printer runs for 24 without making some hick-up?
Exhaustion level 1 = 72 hours without recharge time and doing multiple strenuous things back-to-back and depending on events
Exhaustion level 2 = 2-3 weeks of travel without recharge time and doing more activities pushing your components harder than level one. This can include dropping to 0 HP three or four times. Pushing beyond normal workloads or taking half your max hit points in falling damage.
Exhaustion level 3 = a month without maintenance. This can include dropping to 0 HP five or six times. Pushing your form to a breaking point in combat. Through various options
Exhaustion level 4 = two months without maintenance. This can include dropping to 0 HP seven or eight times and being brought back from the dead without repairs being done. Only artificers and tinker tool proficient people can do this. The DC will depend on the fight that killed the player.
Exhaustion level 5 = 6 months without maintenance. This can include dropping to 0 HP nine times and breaking yourself to complete an objective.
Exhaustion level 6 = a year without maintenance leads to a shutdown that equals death. This can include dropping to 0 HP ten times, along with a y death that breaks your body into pieces.
To be clear, if you are killed in combat, bringing you back is just as hard as bringing any Human ally back. Chances are our body can be activated without a soul. OR, my favorite DM makes the choice of what it means.

You only lose the benefits of a long rest if said rest is interrupted by an hour of strenuous activity. Speaking is fine.

Appears inert. And the answer, according to the warforged description, is yes. It's called Sentry's Rest.
