Just curious how people are linking spell in their homebrew as attempting to do such prevents it from being shared publically. Any help with this or pointers to tutorials covering thinking spells would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks! I've tried using the [Tooltip Not Found] without the desired results but perhaps I was doing something wrong and will try again and get back to you on the results after my second attempt.
Hmmm it does not seem to be able to link to Compendium content nor do I see a tutorial on that in the link you provided for example something like say [compendium]Channel Divinity[/compendium] Any idea how you'd go about this or is this simply not possible?
[compendium] is not a tool-tip that is available, and neither are class features. The ones provided in the thread I linked in my earlier post are the only available tooltips. :)
No worries, presumably a link anchor could be inserted via the comments or using an extension program like link or straight up using dissenter by recommending such programs in the monster/feat/whatever to force overwrite the page into linking the content back to DNDbeyond.
Hopefully, DNDbeyond team will catch up with the times and put this directly into homebrew for content creators. I'm sure that's pretty far down the list of things demanding their attention though so, for now, we work with what we have. Thanks for your help and recommendations and if you find something later that allows for this please contact me.
Why would you need to link to a class feature compendium? That is one of those things that is fully described in the class description. Whatever the context is, merely mentioning "channel divinity" should be all you need.
Spells are fully described as well so by that logic all you should need is the name of the spell.
Spells, monsters, and items are not described at all in the character sheet. They are described in the sidebar which is pulling in information from outside the sheet, it is why the sidebar exists.
So you're trying to make a monster that uses character abilities? In which case you should instead describe the abilities in full, as is done with other such monsters.
I'm a little hesitant to do this as I don't want to get flagged for using content behind a paywall that will get me banned or suspended. If this is something that is commonly done when making homebrew and is ok than I will utilize it.
It's what official monsters do, none of them link to compendium content. For example, the bard has song of rest which is a condensed version of the bard class ability of the same name

If the homebrew is just for use by you and your friends, then there is no problem.
If you want to publish it, you will have to stick to class features in the SRD/basic rules. This does include all base class features, but not all subclass features.
You'll be looking for this thread about tool-tips! Here's an example of a tool tip:
[ spell]Eldritch blast[ /spell] without spaces gives us: Eldritch blast
Ok I tried this but for whatever reason all my 1st level spells are not showing up but all the other ones are…
You probably did some copy/paste for those 1st-level spells, or perhaps there was some kerfuffle with italicized or emboldened text. Am I right? If so that likely introduced some errant code that is fouling the tooltips. At the top of the description field for your homebrewyou should see a series of grey buttons, find the one with the following symbol and click/tap it:
</>
That will allow you to see the html source code for that field and you will be able to check if there is anything in those tooltips that shouldn’t be there; (acommon culprit is the following code where a space should be):

Yup works fine. I don't know what the error was that I was making before but I got it working now. Thanks again!

Ah I see your confusion. I am not referencing or referring to character sheets but rather monster sheets.

You don't have to copy it ad verbatim, but express the ability rather than linking to it.

Fair point. I'll do that as other options don't see available.

Well based on all the information you provided, I can tell that all your first level spells are not showing up but all the other ones are.
Try doing exactly all the same things to the first level spells that you did to the rest. That should fix it.
Also, what are you even talking about?
You probably did some copy/paste for those 1st-level spells, or perhaps there was some kerfuffle with italicized or emboldened text. Am I right? I hope that helps.
