Has anyone tied item DC to the character that is using it?
Set DCs work really well in the beginning then they feel like they become much easier to overcome at higher tiers. Our game has been tying item DC to spellcasting stat or CON if you do not have a spellcasting stat. Since most items we have with DCs are attuned, it kind of makes sense that it uses the attuner's abilities. Those that are not, light a javelin of lightning can keep up with a character instead of being just another item that never gets used because everything makes it save easily.
I just wanted to see if this has been tried by others and how it went.

IMHO, Earthdawn is still the best fantasy realm, Shadowrun is the best Sci-Fi realm, and Dark Sun is the best D&D realm.
Magic items are intended to be static representations of their creator’s capabilities at the time of their creation. They kinda get locked in stone as part of the creation process. That being said, I do know that lots of people make items that scale with the user’s abilities. I know this because they ask how to do it in DDB’s homebrewer and I am the person who often delivers the unfortunate news that it’s not currently possible.
I will say that if you designate no set DC for a spell attached to a magic item, the item will automatically use the caster’s spell save DC, but it doesn’t work with spell attacks, and it only works for spells. And officially, if a character has no class-granted spellcasting ability, the item will use the PC’s Proficiency bonus and no ability modifier whatsoever, which kinda makes sense for a non-caster.
Thanks IamSposta. It makes sense that the spells power is capped at the creator's ability scale, but it always bugged me. So far it seems to be a net positive at our table.

As usual, I hope this helps.
