There was a short quasi-mystery in one campaign, this sort of spiritual trial on a ship as we traversed to a mysterious island. I honestly don't remember much about it other than it being confusing and unclear what we were supposed to do to resolve the situation. I was pretty checked out to be honest.
1. No and no. The murder mystery looks cool though, and I might try running one at some point in the future for my players.
2. Dm'ing, no. Players, sorta? The first time I played was a session run by some relatives, and it was set at a festival. So if you count some activities there like tug-of-war or something as sports, then yes.

I have never run a murder mystery, but I have played in one. And I also played in the Mage Tower game in Strixhaven. Both were pretty fun. In the murder mystery, we were trying to solve the murder of a wealthy shipping tycoon who had hired our party to clear out some abandoned ruins that belonged to her family so she could build a new trading post there. The Mage Tower game was pretty much by the book, but I really enjoyed it.
Sort of -- there was a murder mystery storyline going on for a while in the Twinkling Stars Tavern. I've never encountered a murder mystery in a traditional campaign setting, though.
QotD for DMs and writers: Name a few of your campaign and world inspirations!
Only inspiration I've taken from other sources so far is using the Universe Smorgasboard thread as a pantheon for my world (albeit some tweaks and also added some of my own gods to fill domains there aren't really gods for, but more or less the same). It's a nice source to use (can even throw in some myths about events that happened in it), and it's much easier for me to remember the name of a god I've rp'ed with or made myself then some random list in an appendix in the Players Handbook.

What is a new race/species/whatever you want to call it, that you would like to see introduced into D&D as playable?
I'd like to see something like a Wolfkin. Similar to the Tabaxi, but with wolf traits. Unlike claws, it could get advantage on attacks, if a companion is 5 feet (to mimic pack tactics)

A pack tactics race would be so powerful, but honestly is in line with the stupid Astral elf free misty step and other broken features. But as a concept ABSOLUTELY there's several cat-like races and no canine ones which is so bizarre.

A wolfkin sounds like an interesting idea. Pack tactics sounds a bit op for a player character, though.
Me personally, I'd like to see... Well, I can't think of any ideas off the top of my head, so I'd say the wolfkin.

I absolutely loved the first article, so thanks for linking it! Murder Mysteries are awesome, and there's a really cool adventure called Affair on the Concordant Express (from Candlekeep Mysteries) with one. I also love to recommend THIS video on murder mysteries and intend to begin making one shortly... But I never seem to get around to things like that that involve work and creativity lol.
And I only skimmed through the article on sports in D&D, though I find the topic interesting and have always wanted to make an overcomplicated version of armwrestling. I guess I could make that and make a DMs Guild and post it there for free, though it'd be a funny first thing to post tbh.

I love drawing from all sorts of things. History like the Revolutionary War, Lewis and Clark, Haitian history, and more. Different cultural things like Appalachian folklore and Swing. I draw deeply from folklore, legends, and mythology a whole lot.
Then there are inspiring literary works and artists that I love to use. Neil Gaiman, Mike Mignola, Andrew Peterson, N. D. Wilson, LotR, Terry Pratchett, etc.

I’d like to see either a species of aquatic squid people or a species that can tunnel through the Underdark like a mole. I haven’t thought much more deeply about it than that.

I would like to see a good plant race similar to the leshy in pathfinder, a skeleton race, a mind flayer themed species, and a playable bullywug race.
It is weird to me that there isn't a dog species yet, but I don't really want one. I can play a shifter or blood hunter if I want a werewolf character, and there are already so many animal races that the average Dnd party looks like it came from Zootopia. Wolves are also overused in fantasy. I'm not saying one shouldn't be made because the more official content the better, but it isn't something I'm really wanting.

It would be cool to see players given burrowing speed and tremor sense. Those abilities are not used enough.

DINOSAURMEN!!!! We can have categories for carnivores, herbivores, omnivores, etc. But dinos are awesome so I would love to see a playable species that's just about dinos! :)

I agree. Paleo-fantasy is an underused genre with great potential.

I'm afraid to do either. Both require a certain amount of buy-in from the players and I'm not sure if my groups would go for it.
For sports I would also look at games like Bloodbowl for inspiration.

Hmmm… for my currently unnamed world I’m still working on, tons of European myths and stuff from that general area, like from Mesopotamia.
For most campaigns I run, every fairy tale under the sun from Hansel and Gretel to Reynard the Fox.

I think to help limit the pack tactics - I'd say it'd have to be melee. This would prevented ranged wolfkin from taking advantage of it.
The idea would be melee, like a wolf's pack's attacking.
