On the flip side we're level 5 so we'll see if he gets thrown into the deep end still. (Hopefully not too much.)

That story always bothered me. Scorpions can breathe under water for up to two days, so it could just sink to the bottom and roleplay as a crayfish.

Status update.
The new guy we've been able to teach reasonably well so far. Went a little into the start of the session with filling out the bare basics of his character sheet.
On the flip side the DM decided to put 40 NPCs into a battle (thank goodness he only uses ~12 at a time) and with their CR is such it's clear his goal is "The party loses the battle and gets moved to the next set piece." Got ~20 of them with 17 AC and ~40hp plus a recharge 5-6 ability that does 6d6 force damage, half on save. (DC 11)
We are 3 level 5s.
That said, if the warlock finally chooses a lv3 spell (fingers crossed for Hunger of Hadar) maybe we'll be able to get a mass of them killed. I've already got them slowed down with Spike Growth and ~15 of them are CR ~1/4 monsters with low AC and HP.
But with it being after midnight we ended the session mid-battle and will come up on it later.

Just had an epic session. Killed a player and brought them back with a sentient artifact made of meat.
She adored the session and everyone else did as well. She's now a vampire warlock with a pig god for her patron.
