The town of Leilon has a long history of being built, destroyed, and rebuilt. It's location, positioned as it is between Neverwinter and Waterdeep, means it will always attract attention both well-meaning and nefarious.
At present, Lord Dagult Neverember, Lord of Neverwinter, is supporting settlers to rebuild, in hopes that the town may thrive once more as a safe waypoint to encourage trade between Neverwinter and Waterdeep.
To apply, please give:
Character name, race, and class (Anything that's officially published is allowed EXCEPT Critical Role, Acquisitions Incorporated, or Rick and Morty)
Background/Backstory: (and choose one of the options below)
And Stats. You can either roll in this thread, dropping 1s once, or you can use point buy.
For background, are you:
1. A Mercenary for Lord Neverember
Dagult Neverember knows that the rebuilding of Leilon requires protection. He has hired adventurers to defend the town from attacks and track down any threats. If you choose this background, you will receive 50gp per tenday. You will answer to Lord Neverember's representatives in town.
2. Spies for Waterdeep
Dagult Neverember’s enemies in Waterdeep do not trust the man — and rightfully so. Representatives of the ruling council of Waterdeep, known as the Lords of Waterdeep, have hired adventurers to pose as settlers in Leilon, all the while reporting anything suspicious to the rulers of the city. Before long, the adventurers will be embroiled in the action. (Or, instead of spying for the Lords of Waterdeep, you can choose any powerful group in the Sword Coast area.) If you choose this option, you will receive an additional 400gp to start with, and more whenever you make your report to your contact.
3. Friends and Family
Friends and family of one or more of the adventurers could be among the settlers of Leilon. Those acquaintances might ask the adventurers for assistance in a general sense, to protect the area. Or those connections might call upon the adventurers to perform specific tasks. If you choose this option, you will receive food and lodging and help from your friends/family.
4. A Stake in Leilon
Land and property is valuable along the Sword Coast. For their service, someone with a vested interest in Leilon might offer the characters their own land. They could use this land to build a business, a stronghold, a tower, or any other structure that they like. If you choose this option you may claim a plot of land in Leilon as your own, though you are responsible to finance any buildings on it.
5. Love of Adventure
Some adventurers — those brave and foolish do-gooders — may just follow adventure, wherever it might lead. If you choose this option, you may begin play with one rare magic item that you've either acquired on your previous adventures or was a family heirloom.
Edited to add: I was getting my adventures confused. This starts at level 7. Each character starts with two uncommon magic items and two common magic items and 500gp.

Name: Tor Baltas
Race: Earth Genasi
Class: Fighter
Background/Backstory: #1 Mercenary
Tor was born the son of a concubine. Growing up in Ibuqar, the palace of his father, the dao Jabbuqani, he was treated with respect but was forced to fight his many half-siblings for his father's entertainment. Those who proved themselves the best fighters were sold as mercenaries and bodyguards around the world for a hefty price. Tor's turn came when he was 17.
Sold to the Golden Griffons mercenary company, Tor made a name for himself as a saboteur, being able to blend in with his rocky surroundings before emerging with his huge sword or axe. Tor served as a Griffon for 15 years, learning some hard lessons - ideals have no place in war, despite usually causing them.
One day Tor was sent to scout on an outpost. He watched for hours, noting the usual assortment of soldiers, and some archers atop watch towers. He missed the mage, sequestered away in his tent. He returned to his commanders with the incomplete report. It would lead to the decimation of his whole squad. Tor managed to crawl away from the flaming carnage and hid in a gully, injured but alive. He could never return to the Golden Griffons - he would be executed for the faulty report that cost so many lives. Better to let them think he had died too. The thought of his friends, now burning, seared in his memory, he went in search of a new life, one where any fighting would finally be on his own terms.

Backstory: Born and raised in Neverwiner Wood by his mother, who herself was the child of a dryad and a wood elf, Crannoc has always felt as one with nature, worshipping Silvanus almost as soon as he could talk. From his father, an aasimar, came something entirely different, a divine spark of innate magic. One that makes Crannoc keenly aware that when something supernatural threatens his beloved forest, he must venture forth to act. And so it was when the spirits of the wood sensed the Lord of Storms awakening to wreak his havoc and distant dragons stir by the sunset, Crannoc was sent to the coast, south and west. On a quest to restore thriving nature to its rightful place. How exactly to do that, Crannoc is not quite sure yet... things make far less sense outside the forest than they do within. One day, Crannoc tells himself as he murmurs a prayer, he will return to his beloved majestic groves and shady glens and all will be right with the the domain of Silvanus.

Background/Back Story (Spy for Waterdeep)
Aeyun was a freelancer, offering his services to those that can afford his services. The only constant in his life was Lathis Bevin a skilled carpenter in Waterdeep. After a returning from a long journey escorting a noble, Aeyun found Lathis with his hands bandaged and cuts running across his face. When asked what happened, Lathis explained that he was forced to create peculiar box made with 17 different types of wood. The perpetrators threatened his family and once finished they crush his hands. In a fury Aeyun tried to find the people who did this, but to no avail. He returned to Lathis to apologize and that he will look for a way to restore his hands. Not long after he met Lothrix, an agent for Waterdeep. She offered to heal Lathis's hands if Aeyun agreed to also work for Waterdeep. He immediately agreed and soon underwent training in spycraft. He found he had a knack for talking to people.
Once word reached Waterdeep of the Lord of Neverwinter plans for settlement Leilon, Aeyun was ordered to head to Leilon under the guise of an adventurer and to report back any pertinent information. Aeyun headed towards Leilon with a secondary goal. Through the years, he has been trying to find information of the one who harmed his friend or any information of the strange box.
Background: Love of adventure - Felys is a half-elf foundling who grew up in a Tyr temple in Waterdeep. The priests could only tell her that she was found on the doorstep of the temple on a snowy winter eve, bundled in a cosset of blankets, with a striking silver amulet around her neck. As she grew up, it became clear that some sort of powerful magic sang in her blood: when she became upset or excited, magic would flare from her in wild, unpredictable bursts. Her wild, chaotic magic was almost at odds with her chipper, kind, and friendly personality. After coming of age, she left the temple to seek her fortune, and perhaps along the way even solve the mystery of her birth and ancestry.
This looks very fun! Sign me up! I love the idea of having an adventure based around a town, and I love the idea of having friends and family around in the adventure, so I'll be picking option #3!
When Oloven's widowed sister, Dylan, told him that she had been granted land in Leilon, and when he was informed that there was nothing at all he could say to dissuade her from taking her five children and moving there immediately, he put everything on hold. Oloven could not begin to understand why she would abandon a stable, semi-comfortable life in Neverwinter for a harsh, uncertain existence in a famously dangerous border town, but Dylan was like that sometimes. There was nothing to be done. She and the children were going, and he would be going with them and that was that.
It was unusual for a monk in service to Helm's Hold to leave the brotherhood, but not unprecedented by any means. The Abbot took his resignation far better than Oloven expected! He said "What better way to serve the Vigilant One than to go out and protect one's own family?" He even granted Oloven an unbelievably large sum of 500 gold pieces to get him on his feet. He told Oloven it was "for services rendered above and beyond the call of duty guarding the Watcher's Forest for almost two decades." Oloven couldn't help but wonder if it was a veiled insult, likening him to a simple mercenary and not a sworn brother of the monastery. Or perhaps it was a bribe to keep his mouth shut over the many secret things he had seen and done in service of Helm and in service of Neverwinter over the years. Whatever the reason, Oloven accepted the gift and walked out on his life's commitment. The next day, the Skabors departed for Leilon.
And so a high ranking brother of Helm's Hold, hero of the Watcher's Forest several times over, master of the silent arts, became a stay-at-home uncle. Instead of morning training, he milks the cows. Instead of patrolling the forest, he tends the vegetable garden. Instead of daily prayer, he walks the children to and from school. Instead of evening meditation, he washes dishes. If he ran into one of his old fellows, he wouldn't be ashamed to admit he is rather enjoying his new life! No one in town knows him as anyone or anything but Dylan's brother. A quiet, kindly man who probably developed all that lean, hard muscle throwing hay bails over his shoulder for thirty years. Oloven has no intention of correcting their assumptions. He does his best work when no one suspects his identity anyways.
And when story time is over, and Dylan and the kids have all gone to bed, Oloven trains as hard as he ever has. This town is notorious. So notorious that Lord Dagult is paying people to move here. It's only a matter of time before trouble starts, and when it does, no harm is going to come to the Skabor family. He'll make sure of it.

Character name, race, and class: Feng, Half-Orc (Custom Lineage), Wildfire Druid
Background/Backstory: (Outlander / 5. love of Adventure) Feng's father Bajok the Bone Crusher raised him with his kin in the Flaming Hawk tribe. In his true heart he was no warrior but Feng had little choice but to conform to the warlike nature of the tribe. He chose an understanding of nature and its primal magic as his path to both satisfy the expectations for him but also as an escape, a possible alternate path of out the life of a true warrior. In the aftermath of the battle in which Bajok fell, Feng seized his opportunity to leave amidst the chaos and set out on his own. Knowing little of the outside world one word stood out in his mind; Leilon. As a half-orc, all Feng knew of his mother was that she had not survived long after meeting Bajok and that she was from tribe or place called Leilon. Given that he never felt that he was a true Flaming Hawk, perhaps exploring the other half of his heritage would put Feng's heart to rest.
Now entering the more civilized and diverse world for the first time, Feng found his heart racing and his eyes wide. He was so fascinated by these new peoples, their customs, their tools and buildings, their foods, etc. that he is full of questions for those willing to speak to one such as he.

This looks very fun! Sign me up! I love the idea of having an adventure based around a town, and I love the idea of having friends and family around in the adventure, so I'll be picking option #3!
Name: Oloven Skabor
Race: Half-Orc
Class: Monk/Way of Shadow

For my magic items I chose a +1 hand axe, and a wand of magic detection for my uncommon items, and boots of false tracks, and a clockwork amulet for my common items.
