I was DM-ing last night and the party was fighting Yuan-ti. The pureblood uses a bow with poison arrows.
If you're hit with a poison arrow do you make a saving throw for the poisoned condition, but still take the poison damage regardless of save or not? Or do you take half damage from the save like a spell or breath weapon attack?
Or is the fact that you are hit with the poison arrow an automatic poisoned condition?
Also how long does the poisoned condition last? I can't seem to find any clear rules unless I'm not looking in the right place.
Poison damage and the Poisoned condition aren't mechanically related in any way. The pureblood's arrows just do the poison damage; there's no saving throw, and they do not apply the Poisoned condition.
Anything that applies Poisoned will say that's what it does and also define how long it lasts and under what circumstances the condition ends.

Don't worry - the monster stablock will always tell you what it does!
If it doesn't say it, then it doesn't do it. 🙂
The Yuan-ti Pureblood displays as follows:
So in this case, read it as normal and note that the attack does an additional 7 (2d6) poison damage.
That's it.
No saving throws, unless a character has a feature that allows them to make a saving throw against poison damage.
It's important that it notes the additional damage is poison damage, because some racial features mean the character takes half damage from poison.

Thanks for clearing it up!
So is the 2d6 poison damage doubled on a crit (in addition to the 1d6 piercing damage being doubled)?
Yes.
