I’ve seen lot’s of min maxing threads, but what they all have in common is that they only take advantage of one player character. But dnd is a team game and what one player can do, two players can do better. For example: two ancestral guardian barbarians can protect each other with their spirits, which seems pretty op.
Circle of the Moon Druid + Wizard for Mage Armor is my favorite one.
This is my biggest complaint about all of the optimization guides. None of them factor in the teamwork aspect of characters. But, it's impossible to cover everything once you get a party of 3 PC's, and I optimize my PC's in a party of 4 PC's and another party of 6 PC's based on the synergies between all of the rest of the members of the party. My characters aren't even close to optimized according to the build guides, but as team members they're optimized incredibly well.
Ancestral Guardian Barbarian and any other martial class, but especially Rogue or Monk.
At 3rd level the barbarian gets a power called Ancestral Protectors. In short the first target a barbarian hits, now has disadvantage to hit other targets. This allows other classes to stand next to the target and be fairly safe from being hit. For rogues and monks this allows more of a focus on doing damage, and less about moving in and out of melee.
Did this with a Kensei monk and a friend with a Rogue. There was very very little we couldn't handle.
But as mentioned above; any discussion of min maxing to be "real" has to include:
The other players; composition of the party is huge
The theme of the campaign (Are dealing with demons? Undead? Orc hordes? This determines choices from spells, sub-classes, and power/feat choices)
The length of the campaign. If I am never going to be higher than level 13, do I need to build like I am going to be level 17th? Many choices aren't important.
- Ghostwise Halfling Thief mounted on Wildshaped Druid of Moon in any Flyby attack form. So many ways to do damage from altitude.
- Goliath Valor Bard with Athletics plus a control-heavy Warlock or Wizard for deadly terrain effects to plow grappled enemies through. For added fun, just add Enlarge spell.
- Shepherd Druid with an Oath of the Crown Bugbear Paladin with Sentinel feat both at 10th level guarding a passageway. Conjure Animals becomes Conjure Wall of Furry Fury.
- GOO Warlock with an Illusionist Wizard. Maximized Mind-F***ery.
Paladin with Mounted Combatant feat + moon druid wildshaped into a mount of some kind. Advantage on melee attacks as long as the target is smaller than the mount. Ability to force attacks to target the high-AC paladin instead of the mount, and the mount can make DEX saves for zero damage instead of half. PLUS the druid gets all their attacks, too... and if you're a Dire Wolf or something else with pack tactics, the druid gets advantage on basically every attack! :D
