Posted May 1, 2025Well, the guidance says to round up OR down to the nearest. In this case, where either direction is equally near, that means there is some discretion (though, yes, I realize that the normal mathematical convention is to round up in such a case). I think since the HP are very much on the low end of the CR 1/8 range (and it's a large range), they decided to round down.
But it is also true that sometimes the CRs in the MM don't match the formula given in the DMG. This is because they had the benefit of play-testing to tweak what the formula gives (I think I saw someone at Wizards mention this as a reason for some mismatches). After all, it's hard to capture difficulty in a simple formula. The whole CR thing is challenge for game designers and rules writers -- it's a very difficult thing to measure systematically, but they want to give DMs SOME sort of tool to start with, but without making it too arcane and complex. At some point, DM experience has to factor in, similarly to how playtesting factored into some of the official CRs.
