3d8 seems a little over-powered to me for hit dice. an alligator only gets 1d8. I submit that realistically (and I know, we're playing a fantasy game), a Gator is significantly heartier than a Cougar, and the Gator wins that fight assuredly in water, and likely on ground, too.
