Shapechanger. The werewolf can use its action to polymorph into a wolf-humanoid hybrid or into a wolf, or back into its true form, which is humanoid. Its statistics, other than its AC, are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.
Keen Hearing and Smell. The werewolf has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.
Multiattack. (Humanoid or Hybrid Form Only). The werewolf makes two attacks: two with its spear (humanoid form) or one with its bite and one with its claws (hybrid form).
Bite (Wolf or Hybrid Form Only). Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) piercing damage. If the target is a humanoid, it must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be cursed with werewolf lycanthropy.
Claws. (Hybrid Form Only). Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 7 (2d4 + 2) slashing damage.
Spear (Humanoid Form Only). Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one creature. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage, or 6 (1d8 + 2) piercing damage if used with two hands to make a melee attack.
Description
A werewolf is a savage predator that can appear as a humanoid, as a wolf, or in a terrifying hybrid form—a furred and well-muscled humanoid body topped by a ravening wolf’s head.
FURRY!
Would a werewolf be allergic to chocolate?
if bitten and the saving throw is failed can you become a different type of lycanthrope?
Multiattack. (Humanoid or Hybrid Form Only). The werewolf makes two attacks: two with its spear (humanoid form) OR one with its bite and one with its claws (hybrid form).
if it's a humanoid, two spears.
if it's a hybrid, bite and claw.
if it's a wolf, no multiattack, just Bite.
Does a character gain the damage immunities in human form? That seems a bit excessive and overpowered for a pc, if they get bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing immunity 24/7 and only have to spend 1 night a month out of control. I want to make a werewolf character but I want it to be an actual challenge to work around; I don't want to be an overpowered tank that steals the spotlight from my whole party because of something that's supposed to be a curse. Also, this is less of an issue, but does the strength bonus also apply 24/7? The wording is a little unclear.
there is also the option to use the Blood Hunter class and take the Order of the Lycan, this allows for being a Lycanthrope of any kind but it does take up the class slot. Tho it gives the reasoning and lore behind the fact of being able to keep enough mental control to use weapons while shifted.
Or you can just follow the PC's as Lycanthropes sidebar and make the following changes to an existing character:
• Strength becomes 15 if not already higher
• Gain the Shapechanger ability as listed:
Shapechanger. The werewolf can use its action to polymorph into a wolf-humanoid hybrid or into a wolf, or back into its true form, which is humanoid. Its statistics, other than its AC, are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.
• When transformed get +1 AC
• When Transformed, gain the Claw and Bite attacks listed with standard Str based modifiers and proficiency:
Claw: 2d4 dmg, 5ft reach
Bite: 1d8 dmg, 5ft reach
• If you bite someone the target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw (DC 8 + the lycanthrope’s proficiency bonus + the lycanthrope’s Constitution modifier) or be cursed.
and that's about it, so you can have a Human Fighter Werewolf just fine, the issue comes with maybe breaking their armor every time they change. or if they turn into the normal wolf, and being stuck inside the armor, they'd have to strip down first, wich takes a bit of time.
yeah, it is a bit strange, but, one could also make the assumption that this immunity only applies if they are in the hybrid form, os if you attack them in human/elf/non-hybrid form, they take damage as normal, and would have ot shift to gain the immunity. Thus revealing themselves for what they truely are, and causing more problems for thmeselves if they were say trying to stay in a village or town without letting people know, as some possible good-allighned Lycanthropes might do, only leaving town when the full moon approaches to avoid killing those they care about where they live.
as you said, it's a bit over powered for a PC, but i'm of the impression that the immunity only applies when they are transformed into the hybrid, and maybe the wolf form. maybe having some kind of alergic reaction to silver in human form if they say picked up a silver fork and it left some red marks on them or the like might be a clue, but unless they transform then a normal iron sword to the gut is still a sword to the gut if they got surprised and didn't shift.
I feel like it should be any alignment since its alignment varies. However, I suppose the natural lycanthrope alignment is chaotic evil, so a werewolf who embraced werewolf lycanthropy would be chaotic evil. Same with the wererat, wereboar, weretiger, and werebear.
Yah. That’s how alignments listings generally work, at least for Humanoids.
There are, for example, many famous good Drow, but most Dark Elves are evil so their statblock says “Neutral evil.”
Werewolves can't hurt each, your right, but when the pack leader slashes at back talking member, it still hurts like hell. Plus fall damage still can damage them, they still need to breath and eat, fire/cold/acid/ect still damage them (that one guy who challenged is getting his face shoved into the camp fire), a pack leader or older wolf may tip their claws in silver, their are ways
Dragons can exhale, wipping half a pack in a second and can do within seconds again. A pack that wants to survive won't tangle with a dragon unless they've got numbers, strength, and a plan (even then it's a risk).
It says for humanoid form two spears
good question
The same way Extra attack works, allowing you an extra weapon attacks. You just move faster, unless you already had Extra Attack. Then it's just kind of the same.
It states that it makes "2 spear attacks in Human form"
Agreed somewhat but a bonus action instead. They would like to rage haha
Human form 2 spear attacks
hybrid bite and claw
Due to werewolves having no magical attacks or silver weapons, A werewolf cannot harm another werewolf. Do what you will with this information
This comment section is so disjointed because people keep repeatedly answering this 3 year old question.
As a Forever DM, the damage immunity of the Werewolf is both a blessing and a curse.
On the one hand, they make that great 1st level "...Run!" Encounter to remind the players that bad things can and will happen and I'm not going to let their chuff slide.
On the other hand, they're also a nightmare for low level PCs because how many level 1-3 parties have one magical silvered weapon? And the curse is also a nightmare because, odds are that at least half the party's getting their Murderously Furry Vibe on after one encounter.
I do feel like, for a CR 3 creature, the Werewolf should have the damage resistance be magic OR silver weapons, and a more powerful version have the magic AND silver, is the Alpha or a Primal Werewolf, something very old and soaked in the 'Old Magic's.
