Shapechanger. The werewolf can use its action to polymorph into a wolf-humanoid hybrid or into a wolf, or back into its true form, which is humanoid. Its statistics, other than its AC, are the same in each form. Any equipment it is wearing or carrying isn't transformed. It reverts to its true form if it dies.
Keen Hearing and Smell. The werewolf has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.
Multiattack. (Humanoid or Hybrid Form Only). The werewolf makes two attacks: two with its spear (humanoid form) or one with its bite and one with its claws (hybrid form).
Bite (Wolf or Hybrid Form Only). Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8 + 2) piercing damage. If the target is a humanoid, it must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or be cursed with werewolf lycanthropy.
Claws. (Hybrid Form Only). Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 7 (2d4 + 2) slashing damage.
Spear (Humanoid Form Only). Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft. or range 20/60 ft., one creature. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage, or 6 (1d8 + 2) piercing damage if used with two hands to make a melee attack.
Description
A werewolf is a savage predator that can appear as a humanoid, as a wolf, or in a terrifying hybrid form—a furred and well-muscled humanoid body topped by a ravening wolf’s head.
Werewolves are awesome!
How does the multiattack make sense for the human form if one of the attacks has to be the bite attack and the bite attack can't be used in human form?
I think it means that the claw/bite attacks are in hybrid form and two spear attacks are when they are in humanoid form.
I think alimgent its up for interpertation for these Were-creatures a lot they don't all act the same way from one another.
Is it possible to have a werewolf as a character?
Yup, here's a little information on the curse of Lycanthropy: A humanoid creature can be afflicted with the curse of lycanthropy after being wounded by a lycanthrope, or if one or both of its parents are lycanthropes. A remove curse spell can rid an afflicted lycanthrope of the curse, but a natural born lycanthrope can be freed of the curse only with a wish.
Lycanthropes, in the Monster Manual, also has a section about player characters gaining certain stats based on each type of Lycanthropy as well.
Oh yay! I'm gonna have to look onto this even more. I just like the idea of having a character with a dark secret and the ability to turn into a wolf.
Are you sure about this? Because now I have someone telling me it's not an official race.
Hey Lyra. Are you playing an Adventurers League game? If so, you'll need to look up the official rules and talk to your DM.
If you're not in an AL game, I find it odd this "someone" said that after reading the links I provided to the monster manual in my previous post. Anyway, if they are going nitpick, tell them to look at the Shifters race. The Shifters race comes from Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron. Hopefully they let you play a Shifter even if you're not in Eberron :)
Well, wouldn't work for me for some reason but I found info for Lycanthrope of D&DWiki which said the same thing you told me. I asked about it on the "A Buyer's Guide for DnD Beyond and filcat told me the same thing as you as there is a section for lycanthropy in the Monster Manual but said that "Werewolf does not exist as an officially released race." And then someone piped in saying I had to make it a homebrew which just got me all kinds of confused.
Honestly I don't even know what the Adventurer's League is. I haven't played DnD in a long while and I'm tying to get back into it but I'm having issues finding a group. I've been making characters just incase someone FINALLY asks me to play. And I really like the idea of having a werewolf as a character.
Werewolf isn't a race technically. It's a curse your character is either born with or gets. You simply roll up a normal humanoid character with class and all and then ask your dm if your can be a werewolf. If they say yes you then apply the changes it says to make if you have lycanthropy.
Rules clarification please?:
Its statistics, other than its AC, are the same in each form.
I have a physical copy of the Monster Manual and a quick check confimmed that yes this is an officialenemy, and while not technically a race on its own there is a section that lets you play as a werewolf (also bear, rat, boar, or tiger). Basically you're just a human/elf/halfling/etc that's contracted the curse.
Many thanks for the come back, still not clear on the HP levels transferring between forms though.
If its damaged in Wolf form, and it 'polymorphs' into hybrid form, do its HPs reset to maximum?
(just asking for a friend ... really/notreally :p)
Your confusion seems to be that you think it is using the spell polymorph. It's not the spell polymorph, so it doesn't follow the rules of the spell. The werewolf, in any form, has the same HP pool.
Many many thanks! :D
(and yes, you are totally right - the confusion was based on the term 'polymorph' used in the monster description)
I think if they added this to the page where we choose our race that would've been easier for us all if we wanted a enemy to be evil or character because we can have all sorts of fun with our "characters" it would be fun.
It says two attacks with it's spear in human form.
in my games I am definitely changing Shapechange to "once per turn as a free action" instead of "using their action" in my games. A lot of the fun of werewolves is that they surprise you (those aren't common merchants!), or they are dynamic opponents, able to use their speed in wolf form and then turn into a hulking brute in the next turn. I have found that if I actually have the shapechangers shapechange in an encounter the PCs can wipe the floor with them.
