Posted Apr 14, 2025I feel this would be a good variant: Undead Fortitude can only be used up to 4/day, but if they fail they can use it on their next turn to get back up to 1hp. Really fits with the whole "I won't die yet" vibe they have going, without making them so variable in power. Think they would have the same CR too.

Posted Jun 3, 2025@MonaLisaSmiley - The 4 is the 'average' score of a 1d6+1 roll. i.e., average of a d6 is 3,plus 1 = 4. So you can either roll the 1d6+! damage each time, or just use 4 as the damage to make things go a little faster.

Posted Jul 7, 2025I played a group of these with a flameskull in Wave Echo Cave (reskinned) and they were surprsingly effective and fun! The Undead Fortitude trait can keep going, over and over, and for our party it gave the flavour of an unkillable horror. What started as, "Pfft, zombies," ended with the a stabbed, flaming, frozen undead body slamming against the party, and dramatic on-the-table CON saves to see if the zed survived the latest death blow.
That zombie will go down in our table's history. They joked about trying to keep him as their own personal protection.
(Love you, The Outsiders!)
