I'm working on making a new character, and I really want to try and play the Rune Knight, but I think it might fall a bit short at higher levels, and so I was thinking multiclassing into Artificer Armorer.
Is it a bad combo? And other, maybe better, combos to recommend?
Falls short in regards to damage at higher levels. Kind of like magic users get stronger in damage, non magic users kind of stop, tho they do keep a stable damage output.
It could go up to 20 of we stay alive. Our DM loves the world he makes so he wants to play as long as possible. Last campaign we went to level 16 I belive.
I'm not clear on how you see Armorer increasing your damage, unless it's the only way you can get a magic weapon. Generally a multiclass like this increases your versatility and utility at the expense of power.
Fighters scale by gaining more attacks. These attacks multiply the effectiveness of magical weapons, and they expend no resources so you can do it all day. When you take levels in other things, you're delaying or outright losing those extra attacks so you better be getting something worth that loss. At least if your main priority is damage output.
Thematically, a Rune Knight/Armorer is a cool concept and I think it could be fun to play. But I don't see it outdamaging a straight Rune Knight beyond level 11.
In a general sense, if you are trying to keep up with casters for damage, don't. They will win. They just do lots more damage than you will. No matter the build, four attacks can't compete with a meteor swarm or storm of vengeance. Instead of worrying about what they'll do focus on what you will do and what you think will be more fun for you.
That all said, going artificer would mean you'd need a 13 in int, which otherwise you'd dump. But that might not be so bad. Though, as Scatterbraind said, I'm not clear on how artificer would boost your damage output.
Assuming you are going to level 20, the thing to keep in mind is that 4th attack you get at level 20. If you are looking at a 1 or 2 level dip, would you be able to get more in damage than you'd lose from the fourth attack. Honestly, I don't really think there's a lot of ways to do that. For example, 2 levels of rogue could get you a couple more d6's, but those can only apply to one attack a round, and then only if you have an ally nearby.
You could go the traditional, single-class fighter damage output route of great weapon fighting style, great weapon master feat. As you will be able to get large, it could be really fun to use a glaive/halberd, and have that 10-foot reach from a large size base. Then go PAM, and maybe sentinel. You'll get crazy numbers of attacks. Just be mindful of which runes you use, as some will compete with sentinel for your reaction, and others with PAM for your bonus action. but that's not such a bad situation to be in, since you know you'll be using both your bonus action and reaction.
Thanks for that. I got some new ideas to work with so thank you for your feedback and knowledge 😊 I will talk it over with my DM, and try to focus more on having fun 😊
Honestly, rune knight is probably one of the stronger martial options so you won't really be missing out... It doesn't scale amazingly, but I don't think you'll ever feel useless.

I want to have some power later on.
Thanks in advance!
Fall short in what sense? If you can describe the problem, it will be easier to suggest solutions.
Also, how high is the campaign going, do you know?
