I think this pinpoints the issue that many players have with the ranger class in general. Most of the other classes and subclasses have abilities that are easily understood, used, and resolved. The ranger's abilities are much more at the mercy of PC/DM interpretation, PC creativity, and DM involvement, making them, in my opinion, perfect for an open imagination role play game like D&D. I can see how this would be impossible to translate into code for a video game, and I believe that this is also why so many new players, KISS RAW fans, and younger player have so much trouble with the class.
I have a few thoughts on your comment about the true strike cantrip.
The spell may work differently in the video game than from how it does during table play. You shouldn't dump on it when you haven't seen how it works.
If you're being stealthy and setting up an ambush, then there's nothing wrong with taking an extra turn to gain advantage with your first attack. I say this because surprising a foe doesn't automatically give you advantage on any attacks.
Having said that, every preview I've looked at says you start at level 1, not level 3. I think you should be more cautious in the future with gathering information and making assumptions.
So I recently watched some of the character creation videos for the upcoming Baldur's Gate 3. For those who didn't know, the game 1:1 follows the 5e rules so it's more like a 5e simulation if anything.
Having played a LOT of BG3 over the last few days, I'd say it's more accurate to say it does a very good job of LOOKING like D&D, but the underlying rules are really different in many many ways as soon as you look at details. It is in early access though, so will change before release.
I'm really enjoying it, but it keeps throwing me curveballs when stuff happens that isn't how the D&D rules work, but IS how the game works. 😊
It's worth bearing that in mind when playing - they've changed a lot of things to improve the gameplay as a videogame: Everyone can disengage as a bonus action; Using a potion is a bonus action; Sneak Attack is only usable on the character's turn as their main-hand attack. Many little differences.
I do really like some of what they've done to the various class/subclass abilities though and the Ranger ones are really interesting.
As for True Strike, note that the game version is not identical to the D&D version. The game version is definitely useful.
Yea, definitely level 1.From my understanding the max level is 4 currently. That could be for balance for when they release more content or could be due to working out higher-level skills.
Tried a Rouge (no assassin sub-class) but how it handles Sneak Attack is a bit annoying but still fun. Will be interesting to see how things like Paladin Divine Smite work if you have to select it and can miss like with Sneak Attack and then not use it on your offhand attack.
Ranger sounds fun but no Sharpshooter Feat - which is probably a balance thing seeing so many encounters have a lot of ranged attackers I find.
I'd still prefer to make my entire party and have six characters but will see how it goes as it could change quite a bit before full release.

You start at level 1.
If you are playing a class that can select a subclass at 1st level then you do so, otherwise you select it at the appropriate level.
Maybe I'm a bit of a nerd for knowing the D&D rules inside out, but I guess it kinda comes with the job, right?
The game does a great job of being faithful in the most part and I'm certain that differences were made for gameplay reasons. 🙂
It definitely doesn't 1:1 adhere to the rules though. 😉

Nerds are cool. If nerding like that is “wrong,” I don’t wanna be “right.”

The game is still in Early Access. Characters made now won't even survive the official launch.
