For those who don't remember all the invocations, Ascendant Step allows the user to cast Levitate on themselves at will. Pretty useful for exploring or just staying out of melee range in combat, but the downside is if you don't have something to pull yourself along you can basically only go up and down. I've been thinking about how to add some horizontal movement to add more utility... it would have to be something that could be done repeatedly, otherwise why not just cast Fly if you need to do some aerial exploration? The simplest idea is probably the Gust cantrip... it's easy to pick up if you're a tomelock and although it's slow, you can at least target yourself and move 5 feet at a time.
The other trick I stumbled upon when coming across an Immovable rod. Basically you can use it to essentially give yourself a climbable surface at any point. My Current DM decided that it allows me to move at my climb speed if I use it in the air.
Anyway, does anyone have any other ideas that could be more useful?
Tie yourself to the party barbarian like a balloon?
I like this. 👌
It ultimately depends on your situation and surroundings. If you're in a cavern, you can try pushing yourself around with a 10' pole, lassoing rock formations with your rope, rising to the ceiling and walking with your hands, etc.
With your gust example, I'm assuming you want an idea for moving in an open area. When you cast levitate, you're typically still on the ground; you may be able to use your movement to run horizontally and simultaneously rise upwards with the momentum. Houligan's balloon idea can let your party pull you from spot to spot while you maintain a constant elevation. The lasso idea can also still work.
Creative uses of magic can make this easier if your DM is lenient. I once ruled a druid's thorn whip, when cast on a target larger than herself, could pull her towards that target. A decanter of endless water can shoot water forcefully enough to cause damage, and in cartoons characters would be swung all over the place while holding onto a running fire hose.

If you have something to kick off from, I don't see why you couldn't use your standing long jump distance.
