Hi everyone, so im playing a level 3 variant tiefling evocation wizard and for my ability scores instead of +2 to charisma from my racial bonus i put +2 into intelligence making my total 18 (I did ask the DM before hand) but after a couple encounters my DM isnt sure if he wants me to keep it as that because your not normally allowed it that high and it makes it a +6 to hit with my cantrip instead of +5.
I have been roleplaying around it when i can since my charisma is now 8, just being not that great in conversation and flaunting how smart i am and stuff.
Just curious on what your thoughts are for this and if you had any ideas to compromise as i would prefer to keep it as its 9 sessions in and when we level again its gonna go straight back to 18 anyway.
You’ve made it to level 3 and the DM is complaining about the effect he approved ne level before you could have had it anyway? You might remind the DM that he approved this and that when you hit L4 you would have moved the Intel to 18 anyway. At worst compromise with him and put the L4 ASI back into Charisma moving it to a 10 and eliminating that negative save and leaving the cantrips etc where they would be if you had gone the other way.
It's now an official, although optional, rule to determine which score gets the +2 and which the +1 regardless of race choice. Since it ultimately doesn't matter. And after so long it would be incredibly unfair to change now.
Basically: they need to grow the **** up and not whine about a measly extra +1 to attack, which they approved of ages ago and was a decision supported by the Official books.
The official rules support starting with a +5 mod. If you roll for scores and got 18 and chose a +2 int race, you'd start with 20, a +5 mod, right at level 1. That's the official rule from PHB. Even with switching cha to int you're still starting with less. He shouldn't have a problem unless he sucks as a DM.

Is your character more optimally built than other characters in your party?
If one character takes advantage of every tip and trick in various rules and others don't it can make a real imbalance in parties leaving some regularly achieving success and others not.
A player capable of building a character with every tip and trick will potentially also be capable of similarly savvy play in game.
In sports like golf players actually take on handicaps to balance things out. One option could be to retcon something like a level or experience drop.
The DM can always add +1 to the monsters’ AC. 🤷♂️
If your dm is after a rebalance of the party s/he could certainly do this AND provide buffs for all party members or just find a way to nerf your character.
Personally, I generally like the optimisation and rebalance approach but consider Tasha's options (within which a halfling or goblin could gain 20 strength with the same ease as a half orc or goliath) to make a particular mockery of past lore. I'd personally opt for a retcon just because of this.
