And when I try to access it, it just shows in app marketplace for where you would purchase it originally, showing the price underneath £26.49, when I click on the price as if to pay again it just says "error" "you already own this item"
If it’s not listed in Current Product Licenses, that would explain why you can’t access it. Customer support can help get that sorted out, though. They’ll probably need your order ID from Google. It should be in your purchase confirmation email: an “A” followed by a bunch of numbers.
I am having the same issue. I purchased 7 books through google play and everything was fine. Now, all of a sudden I don't have access to any of them. When I select them in the market place it takes me to the "add to cart screen" on the site. In the app it gives me an error saying "you already own this item". I had been using the books for months prior, so I doubt it was a purchasing issue. I already checked the "sync entitlements" tab, and it says I should be all set.
I've had to put off actually playing for a few sessions now, because I don't have any of my resource materials, so between the money and doing something I enjoy I'm becoming pretty bitter with the whole situation.

When I purchased it originally it got stuck on a screen of processing for ages that seemed like it wasn't changing. So I refreshed the app
And then after refreshing it, this issue presented.
I have raised the issue with customer support and emailed Google as well, due to payment going through the android playstore app store.

OK thank you, I have sent the ID as a follow up to my previous email that was sent to Support.
Though I'm thinking I may have been a bit premature now.
As I saw an option to request a refund from Google play since the book wasn't working. I planned to refund it and then try buying it again.
It says my refund is under review currently.
