As of today, the issue still remains. Although I can easily change this on my players' sheets after I tell them to take a rest, I can't wait for this to be fixed as it would make things way easier.
I have created several magic items for my players. The majority of these items charges refresh on a long rest. However, when the characters take a long rest in their character sheets it does not seem to refresh the charges. During creation of the item, I have selected the charge reset condition as long rest.
Am I doing something wrong?

I talked to staff about this - it's a design issue, rather than a bug. My understanding of the situation is as follows:
There are many items in Dungeons & Dragons that regain variable charges under specific circumstances (short/long rest or dawn/dusk). This meant that, way back when the magic items system was put in place, the team didn't implement a system for this, as it might cause difficulties going forward.
Yes, there should be a system for magic items to regain charges on rest or dusk/dawn, including "fully recharge" and the ability to regain partial charges of set or variable amounts.
I am confident that this will be introduced as the team work through improving the homebrew system and underlying tools.
I have just purchased the DnD Beyond books and subscription and convinced my players to try it (with great difficulty).
After reading things like this (a pretty fundamental feature that was removed hasn't been replaced about a year later) makes me wonder if I have made a mistake.
Even ignoring encounter aids and dice rollers etc, the site should at least be adept in helping you keep your character sheet well maintained. Even if the resets only worked for short/long rest (as an interim fix), for fixed values, this would be something. Something other than having to hunt down each item and manually click however many times you need to undo the used charges.
Really starting to wonder if I have wasted my money. Hope something gets added soon.

It's already been said to not be broken so there's nothing to fix. Resetting charges on rest is intentionally left out since there's so many magic items that regain a variable amount of charges back on rest or at dawn, which makes it very difficult to implement. Hopefully at some point it will be implemented but it's certainly not going to be an easy thing to put in.
Well... if they have a selectable option in their creation tools that suggests that things may be done automatic (they have "long rest", "short rest" and special...), as a user I would expect that those triggers are automatically evaluated. If I select "special", I expect this job to be the players job.
If those things are not evaluated automatically, at least a warning should be next to the advanved Information section in the item creation wizard - as the system does not behaves like many of us will expect from dndbeyond.
Not to continue to bump a very old thread, I don't really have an issue with the charging/not charging at short/long rests. I just need to find out where the charge description shows up on an item when it is in the players inventory.
Do we have a timeline for this to be fixed, or even a manual reset button? I have an item with a large number of charges, so there is no check boxes to reset the charges. The only way I can reset the charges right now is to remove the item from my character and add it back on.

Hello rythemton, you can change an item's charges by clicking on the item in the sheet and clicking the boxes in the sidebar for the item's charges. So if you have an item that recharges 1d4+1 charges at dawn, for example, and rolled a 3, you could click 4 times (3+1) to regain use of those charges.
When I posted this request, all I had was a Use button, with a box showing how many charges were left. There was no option to increase or decrease charges. It appears that work has been done on the interface as it now is giving me +/- buttons.
I would also like this ability to be implemented, at least in a simple form. I agree with Faldrain in that i think it should need to be set to special for it to be manual. and things set to short rest or long rest should reset the charges like it would a regular spell slot upon meeting the requirement. So something requiring a short rest will also be rest if you take a long rest for example. That's the ideal form anyway. but if i had to put it in a short rest after performing a long rest, i'd be ok with that. it'd save me from having to dig through my inventory for the item. Which would be very convenient.

Are they confirming the long rest? Are other long rest features being reset?

yes and yes
I have been able to verify on a test character. All other features on the test character reset. However, the items charges does not.

Still ongoing issue when creating an item that uses charges for something else and try to make a spell that is once per short or long rest
well ill join the 2year long queue waiting for a fix for this :D
Man, sounds like everyone has been having this same problem for quite a long time. When will this be fixed??
Still a problem, 1 more request to fix
Just fell over the 'can't specify recovery period' for charged items issue. Glad to know it's on the roadmap, I guess. Any ETA?

Nearly 2020, and I still can't get it to work for me.

Does anyone know where to find this information?

At the very least, when I click rest, I'd expect to see a list of items that need to be checked for charges.
